My mane is not as thick and lushes as it used to be and thinking it might be time to try something new.
One of my mates told me to try some hairloss shampoo he picked up from Amazon with hundreds of 5 star reviews. They are hard to believe though... Has anyone here got any hairloss shampoo recommendations?
(I know there is no scientific evidence to prove they work but worth a punt)
(I know there is no scientific evidence to prove they work
Why do you reckon that might be?
but worth a punt)
Why's it worth a punt when, if it actually worked, they'd be falling over themselves to prove it?
Your money would be better spent on a hat. Hats are cool, more people should wear them.

Here's the real hair loss secret that no one ever told you about.
Hair is a royal pain in the arse that you're better off without. You won't miss it one bit when it's gone.
Free yourself from tonsorial tyrrany.
Get a No.1 all over and you'll never look back.
Hats are cool, more people should wear them.
Also this.
I wear a fez now. Fezzes are cool.
On a more serious note, my hair had been thinning for some years and looked bloody awful from about 2 days after a very short cut until I paid to get it cut again.
I bought those clippers above about 12 months ago and have been running them over my bonce once a week since. I wish I'd bought them years ago.
Around about that time there was a guy in the office who went to Greece (I think) and paid about £1500 to have some of his hair transplanted from the back of his head to the top of his head.
It looked bloody awful initially - like a tiny tractor had been across his head ploughing it and then planting a new crop.
However, after a few months when it had all started growing properly again it did look pretty good and it restored his hair to its former glory.
I prefer my solution though.

My experience with hair loss shampoo (yes, have tried loads of them) was that one did work but took some six months to do that. If you stop using them regularly then you'll be back to where you started. Have also used other things such as rosemary essential oil directly onto the scalp and also supplements.
If I were you I'd be looking at your sex hormones and getting them tested privately, perhaps via a hormone specialist. It would be a starting point.
Every night rub salt in to your scalp, leave a bowl(NOT a beaker) of water beside the bed. When all the new hair trys to reach the water, quickly tie it in a knot. Job done.

If you're still maintaining some sort of hair cut/style, get it cut as short as you can. Once you're thinning, any kind of length just becomes a comb over. Shorter will actually make it look like you've got more hair!!
I second (or third) the wearing of a hat. I started thinning at about 17, shaved my head for charity and have never really looked back. Apart from a couple of occasions in my twenties when I wondered if it was that bad and then attempted to grow it. It was that bad 😀
I find taking a razor to my head twice a week whilst in the shower is best. Bought a head blade thing a couple of years ago and just used any old razor prior to that. Head blade gives a much smoother and more uniform finish. Clippers are okay, but you inevitably miss a bit and then find it four hours later whilst at work or out and about. The dreaded fuzz patch!
Once you’re thinning, any kind of length just becomes a comb over.
Aye,and there's no telling where that will get you.

Shorter will actually make it look like you’ve got more hair!!
I've got alopecia (bald splodges in otherwise good cover) and this is true, my bald bits show up less when the rest is no1.
Hats are tricky in late 40s. You either look like a saddo trying to re-live skate years, a wannabee socialist in a castro cap, or a hipster in your straw hat. I just ride everywhere now so i can leave my bike hat on.

Premature Kojakulation.

You got as far as detoxing?!
Jesus what a ****ing pisstake.
Jesus! I stopped reading after ‘energy balance’ 🙄 in one all seriousness I actually got quite down when mine started going. Cutting it all off was the best thing to do. If I had the choice now I’d stick with being bald or opt for total head hair removal so I don’t have to bother cutting it at all. I’m luckily in that I have a decent shaped head. Wouldn’t be as happy if my head was like a topographical map of a bowl of lumpy porridge.
My mane is not as thick and lushes as it used to be and thinking it might be time to try something new.
Yeah, that was my thinking a month into lockdown, so I got one of these:

These cost me £30, a haircut cost me £10, I’ve saved myself about £30 so far.
And that doesn’t include what I’ve spent on fancy shampoo over the last fifty-odd years!
anyone who mentions detoxing
comes across asis a total charlatan.
For exactly the reason you mention. How many books is he selling?
... and having now followed the link, that's weapons-grade quackery with a side order of horseshit.

Oh, wow. In her own words:
<< other doctors who do not understand my style of practice regularly complain about me to the GMC >>
I googled. "Dr Myhill is the most investigated doctor in the history of the GMC. She has been subject to in excess of 30 investigations in the last 15 years."
<< I worked for 20 years within the NHS in General Practice and increasingly found myself restricted by what I was and was not allowed to do.
...
All that one is allowed to do for patients is that which is “evidence based” >>
Damn those pesky 'proven facts.'
<< What patients actually want is an answer to the question why they have developed their particular problem followed by which nutritional, lifestyle or environmental changing factors need they put in place to allow improvements. >>
Not "medicine" then?
<< Now the focus of my practice is on looking for causes of problems with respect to diet, micronutrient status, allergies and lifestyle changes. This approach is highly successful at tackling the majority of medical problems. Indeed, if this package was applied across the board, then the pattern of chronic disease, degeneration and cancer in Western nations would undergo a radical change. >>
She's not just a quack, she's a dangerous quack. Got cancer? Here, buy my keto diet book!
<< The two things I dislike most about the medical profession are their power to access diagnostic tests and their power to prescribe. >>
Diagnostic tests are bad, far better just to guess. Amirite?
Draw a small rabbit on your head.
Logged in just to point out that Dr Myhill is a discredited loon, but beaten to it.
Good work chaps.
Get a set of clippers, get on with your life.
How I found out my hair was thinning
Years ago, I was at a gig. I videoed a couple of songs and later, put them on YT. I get a message off some bloke, asking if he could get a copy of the original recordings, and I could have some of his. No problem.
So I'm sat watching one of his videos, thinking it was pretty much the same view I had, Then, ooh, there's me, about 10 feet in front.
WHAT THE **** IS THAT ON MY HEAD............MY HAIR IS GONE
So I point it out to the missus, and all casual she replies "It's been like that for years"
Not smooth bald, but thin enough to see scalp in certain light conditions. A #2 blends it well with the remaining hair
Draw a small rabbit on your head.
It'd have to be several rabbits for that gag to work.
From listening to endless American podcast adverts that advertise a company that sells this stuff, apparently the only things that work are Propecia/Finasteride and Minoxidil/ Rogaine, I think one stimulates regrowth in some people and one helps you keep what you got
I get the impression neither work miracles for most people, you have to taken them indefinately, one has common nasty side effects (depression, ED etc.)
After 4-5 years trying to ignore the fact that my forehead was getting bigger, lockdown forced me into getting a short clipper cut all over.
Now wondering why I wasted all those years and all that money on regular haircuts.
"It was taking me longer and longer to wash my face"

Answered in the 2nd reply.
Don't fight it. As a bonus you'll never have to pay for a haircut again!
If you don't fancy going straight for the number 2 all over, start a tiny bit longer, then the next cut, down a grade. You'd be surprised how fast hair grows when it's 2 or 3mm long - it gets to 5/6mm within days it seems.
I was pretty thin on top by mid-30’s. My dad lost his hair early, my granddad too. I stood no chance. Now mid-40’s and pretty much bald. Doesn’t bother me one jot. Nothing I can do about it so why worry? Got some clippers and just keep it shaved...
Minoxidil worked for me to stop/dramatically slow down the loss of head for my bald spot. I just got lazy as you need to do it twice a day. As soon as I stopped using it the hair loss accelerated.
Clippers came out in lockdown and it's now much easier.
My barber did try and sell me on the idea of going to Turkey for a transplant though (he isn't Turkish either).
Try sitting on the main gun of a destroyer wearing a skintight catsuit surrounded by adoring sailors.
I have been pretty bald for year sand grade 1 over what is left for about the last 6 years. I am still surprised when I see photos of myself, I look much more bald than I think I do.
Ok I’ll chip in.
Assuming the op is male and he has male pattern baldness....
This is caused by having male levels of circulating testosterone, so the suggestion to pay privately to have this tested would prove this to be the case. Hardly necessary and certainly wouldn’t be offered on the nhs. It’s normal. Not an illness. Not for taxpayers to fund if you want to do something about it.
What do you do about it? Well finasteride and minoxodil do work to a certain degree while you take them but stop when you stop. They work by blocking testosterone and making your hormone profile slightly less male. Sound like a good idea? Maybe for you but not for me. Not provided on nhs for reasons above.
As for rethatching? I guess there’s a lot of money to be made there. Not by you or me though. Hats are definitely cheaper.
Declaration of interest- male nhs dr, started thinning about 18. Go for a number 2 all over now age 50. Gmc number 4012034. Number of complaints to gmc: 0
Embrace it!
Are you talking about those caffeine shampoos? The ones that make such vague claims they don't actually make any on TV because it's more regulated that what you can print on the bottle?
Personally, I made it until about 40 before it started thinning, I'm 43 now.
I didn't even notice until I was having my hair cut one day and the Girl who cuts my hair hair "shall I trim this bit at the front?" And I was thinking, "what, my fringe?" But it appears by forehead is getting longer and there's a 'island' forming at the front.
I will fight a #1 all over with my dying breath, I've always hated the 'Mitchel Brother look' and being pale with a massive round head doesn't help, I just have it cut very short now. Lock down was a nightmare.
I’ve always hated the ‘Mitchel Brother look
Mitchell.
I've been a Mitchell brother my entire life.
So has my younger brother, Grant.
My favourite card that we sell.

Male with female pattern baldness. Started thinning at about 25 and it’s been disappearing for 25 years. Annoying thing for me is possible sunburn as I have red hair (still) and very pale skin. I don’t do a number 2 all over but keep it short to avoid the comb-over look.
Male pattern baldness is related to your balance of hydroxy/Dihydroxy-testosterone ratio. The above drugs do have an effect on this ratio As they inhibit the responsible enzyme, but will cease once you stop taking them. The surprising thing is how common hair loss in males really is. About 50% of males will have 50% loss by 50 if I recall.
I’d still rather be red and thin than grey and thick 😉
Your money would be better spent on a hat. Hats are cool, more people should wear them.
This most definitely speaks the truth.
I have a deficiency in follicular output on my crown and have talked for some time about getting it all cut really short but Mrs. P is adamant I'm not going to do it.
Any suggestions how I get it done and continue to live a nice quiet life?
Divorce isn't really an option. 😉
Just shave it for charity and then she can’t complain for fear of coming across as evil 😀
Hair is a bloody nuisance and id be perfectly happy if it disappeared from my head permanently, its a hassle to go over it every week for a grade 1.
EDIT : and shaving....that can get to **** as well
Just shave it for charity and then she can’t complain for fear of coming across as evil 😀
I like your thinking sir
I honestly thought I didn't have the head shape for it, but with an ever clearing patch on my crown and then with no access to barbers it came time to try out the cropped look.
It's really not that bad, it's quick and easy to maintain, once a week or every other week, I no longer need to spend money on barbers or on hair wax, I'm embracing the lack of hair. I do need hats on sunny days though as my skin is pretty Irish (Irish mother, I'm 90% freckles).
Ok, here goes.
Stage 1, minoxidil. Unbranded works as well as branded. Twice a day and it does slow things down. It's the only reasonable way as the hormone adjusting pills are something to stay away from.
Minoxidil slows hair loss down, is clearly backed by evidence, but isn't magic and works differently for everyone. It helped me for 3 or 4 years from around 30, then age told!
The shampoo is nonsense. Just no evidence of anything. Don't even consider plugs. You'll keep thinning, it looks rubbish and fluffy and scars so you can't shave it.
Stage 2: Then, for heaven's sake, shave it. I'll let you into a secret: no one cares about your hair, only you! Just get some decent clippers and do it before it gets awkward. Full head of hair looks good, a shaved head looks good, in between not so good.
To look your best though make sure you do a few things:
- Have a bit of colour in your skin, especially if you you have dark hair. This avoids looking like you have the Big C, and just blends in with your stubble way better. We're not taking the full Dale Winton here, just get a bit of sun (but don't burn, ever, to avoid old man liver spots).
- It helps if you carry a bit of muscle/be good and lean. Weedy and bald ain't a good look. Mo Farah and Statham both look good and are both in shape. Peter Ebdon, Moby and Jeff Bezos, not so much.
- have a bit of face stubble if you can. It just works better and avoids the total cue ball look.
- dress well. A shaved head is sharp and so scruffy doesn't work so well.
- This also goes for your teeth. Yellow or brown teeth age your face hugely. Either get them sensibly bleached (no Jedward or Katie Price) or get some crest supreme Whitestrips and do it yourself gradually. This really helps.
And I repeat, no one else cares about your hair. People do care though about how you "look" overall.
Looking good is always, well, good! I like how I look better at 40 with no hair than 30 with.
As above, it's not an illness, it's just what happens to some people. And, even if you found something that works then everyone you know will see your hair return and they will all think you are vain.
Any suggestions how I get it done and continue to live a nice quiet life?
Just point out that any attempt by you to dictate how she has her hair styled/coloured is likely to be met with a hard, stony stare, at the very least, so you expect the same freedom to do the same.
It is, after all, what equality is supposed to be about, n’est est pas?
I did not consult my partner before attacking my messy hair with my beard trimmer, any more than she consults me, although she was a bit concerned before getting it cut short a while back, and asked me about it, but only because she has a large scar on the side of her head from an emergency operation and was worried about what people might say.
I just reassured her that most people won’t even notice or comment. I was right, she has it short now.
I recommend Baldcafe on YouTube if you need a bit of motivational help with just shaving it. I'd been putting it of for 10 years, and feel so much happier that it's now gone and is no longer a background anxiety.
I’d been putting it of for 10 years, and feel so much happier that it’s now gone and is no longer a background anxiety.
Pretty much this, tbh.

Have you seen Jeff recently? He has become 'hench'.

Got a hot new wife to keep up with. The old look, not so good.
Let it be a lesson....

Started thinning in my early 20s. By age 30 it was no 2 all over, by age 40 wet shave. In my younger years it did cause a great deal of stress and confidence issues however as others have pointed out, taking care of your physical well-being and dressing well will make a massive difference.
Age 54 now and pretty comfortable in my own skin apart from the "lockdown weight gain".
Eat more fish! No kid. It may not work but your mrs might be cheered up.
Embrace the one true haircut
As already said don't mess about with half measures, no blade or number 1, you'll be suprised that no one cares after the 1st week.
Get out in the sun to get some colour on your head, if your that desparate for hair you can be like the rest of us and grow a beard.
Wooly hats, beanies for the winter win.
Let the remaining hair grow.. put it in a "bobble" pony tail style.. her indoors will "cave" in a matter of days.
Then a number 1.
If you go to places like Serbia and Bosnia most men have thick vigorous hair.
GP has put me on Finasteride to shrink my prostate. One of the side effects is reappearance of lost hair, which can take 6 months. So I'll be checking in the mirror in March.
The thing is, a buzz cut might not be what you wanted, but it's not like it's anything to worry about. Sex symbols, movie stars, action heroes are all available with the same hairdo. Doesn't do them any harm in the coolness stakes.
