So, the MC family holiday this year is a long weekend in a cottage just outside Birkenhead* so we can explore a bit of Liverpool.
Just wondering what knowledge the forum has of anywhere to kill a couple of hours this side of the river though - two sulky teenagers in tow, but somewhere for a stroll, bit of history or scenery, decent cafe or pub for food etc
*Just want to be absolutely clear this wasn't my idea, I wasn't consulted, nor was I informed until after "we" had booked.
Cheers
Bat walk in Roydon Park, Frankby, Fridays only.
Meet at the café car park at 7pm for a 7.30 start. Strictly no dogs.
Avoid the place early on Tuesday mornings though. There's some odd people about.....
*checks time. Discounts bat walk*
😉
Get yer hedge cut....🙂
Hilbre Island
Wirral Way
Marine Lake
Birkenhead Park
Bidston Hill
Port Sunlight
Parkgate
All I can think of at mo, getting late for me!
The U-Boat at the ferry terminal is cool.
Thurstaston is nice for a walk and sunset views.
Delamere Forest is 40 mins from Birkenhead, bike hire there and a marvellous cafe 😉
I’d be up for a ride if you can escape?
About 40 minutes also gets you to Loggerheads / Moel Famau in Wales, nice walks.
Port Sunlight is interesting.
West Kirby has some decent cafes, Aubergine and Sweet Pea are good.
Message gixxer he hails from new Brighton....
Fish and chips at Parkgate is a must
Home cafe in Oxton does a very nice eggs benedict.
If you go to Birkenhead Park, don’t go to the visitor centre cafe, really bad.
Go karting at Deeside (way cheaper than the one in Liverpool)
Fish and chips at Parkgate is a must
With ice cream for pudding, (assuming you've been good)
Thanks guys - sadly no chance of escaping for a bike ride
Nice walk out to Hilbre Island if the tide timings are right.
If you make it into liverpool then the pancakes at moose coffee should make up for the trauma of staying on the wrong side of the river.
There's a really good architectural salvage yard. It recently bought 700kg of fancy bricks for £400.
I never thought I would see this written down!! "family holiday this year is a long weekend in a cottage just outside Birkenhead"
I have driven/ridden through Birkenhead for the last 24 years and can't say its the sort of place I associate with a family holiday.
But TBH the trains from there will get you to the nice bits of the Wirral/Liverpool.
Oh and point of order n0b0dy0ftheg0at Parkgate isn't actually on the Wirral, I know this as I vote in Parkgate ward and as a result my Mersey Tunnel tag has gone up 60p a trip 🙁
Wirral District
As someone who lived in the Heswall area through my teens, I never realised Parkgate was not technically Wirral, sorry! Still on the peninsula and worth visiting for a chilled few hours, with lovely views across the Marsh and over the River Dee to North Wales, plenty of decent places to eat.
One thing in Birkenhead's favour is train links, very easy to head over the Mersey, down to Chester and into North Wales, or get across to the likes of West Kirby.
Mersey tunnel tour, under the river about 6 quid pre booked.
Birkenhead Park, for a nice walk around,
Liverpool bus tour,
Ferry ride to Liverpool and Albert dock and lime street area museums, free parking all day at Seacombe ferry,
Train to liverpool,
Burton marshes walk,
I know this as I vote in Parkgate ward and as a result my Mersey Tunnel tag has gone up 60p a trip 🙁
Yeah, but you have the best Aldi in the world! 😁
Family holiday in Birkenhead - that's a level of innovation you don't often see on here. Is some sort of coded message being sent here from your other half? Anyhow, there are 100s of things to do in Liverpool which is a stone's throw away so you'll have a great time.
Glen Affric have their brewery in Birkenhead (obvious really from the name) and have a taproom, which is meant to be good. It's bevvying in an industrial unit down Birkenhead docks - fair to say there are better places for a drink in Liverpool, but if you like the craft ale and it's nearby it might be nice for a couple of hours.
So, actually had a decent couple of days, it's been better than I feared.
Saturday we took the train over to Liverpool and did the Cavern Club and the docks/museums area. Today we started at Fort Perch Rock - which was shut - worked our way down the coast, got to Marine Lake just as they closed the road as the high tide was crashing over the wall, had some surprisingly ordinary chips but fantastic fish at Parkgate, before heading back up to New Brighton for ice creams and arcades.
Apparently we are visiting Cheshire Oaks on the way home tomorrow. FML.
