Going in a couple of weeks. Mrs The Spider wants to go to Swansea as that is where she was a student. I want to have a look at Kidwelly castle. We also want to tour the peninsula and find a couple of beaches for body boarding.

Other than that what should we be looking out for?

We're not taking bikes.

A walk over Rhossili Down, or to the north of Llangennith would be on my list. Pity you are not taking MTBs as I had a great ride there a few years ago

Off the beaten track....walk out to Whiteford Burrows (park in Llanmadoc), if tide is right, you can walk out to the lighthouse (last remaining cast iron one or something like that).
For body boarding, Llangennith....tho be warned if weather is good, traffic is a nightmare...it was taking people over an hour to get from the beach car park back to the village on Saturday.

Langlands Bay is lovely, and the walk round from Mumbles is nice too. I would have said Castellamare restaurant at the very end of Mumbles, but Tripadvisor says it has changed owner and gone downhill. If the food is half decent, the situation is stunning overlooking St Bride’s Bay and the lighthouse.

. Still open for food, according to what I've read? It's ok, I wouldn't travel down specifically for food. But it's worth visiting Rhossili for the view and all that.

Re. Joes Ice Cream, it's a local favourite and locals don't often opt for the flavours (mint, strawberry or whatever). Get the vanilla. it's not described as vanilla, I don't think, but that's the traditional recipe.

On Gower you've got several castles, though nothing as big as Kidwelly. Carreg Cennen near Llandeilo is a good one as well but we have many, many castles around here.

If you like a walk and a bit of history, walk from Port Eynon around to Culver Hole via the Salt House and Port Eynon Point Cave. Everything from bone caves, wreckers, smugglers, vanished castles and ship wrecks in a handful of miles.

Dolphins are around the coast at the moment - I saw a pod off Port Eynon a couple of weeks ago, and know there were some off Bracelet Bay over the weekend - and plenty of seals.

If you like a bit of history, there's 3 cliffs bay, Pennard Castle and then up the valley to Gower Heritage Centre and Parc Le Breos Neolithic burial chamber - in a stunning hidden valley & you could carry on up to King Arthur's stone on Cefn Bryn, come back round and along the coast path.

Enjoy, when was Mrs spider at Swansea as a student?

Carry on past Giants Grave, the burial chamber, and there's a bone cave up on the right, with lime kilns etc dotted around. It's a lovely valley, but you'll feel out of place if you don't have a dog with you. I always love ignoring the 'no cycling' signs there. 😀

If the tides work then the walk out to the end of Worms Head is a little adventure

I just saw that about Wormshead.  bizarre coincidence thinking of it then seeing that.

The pub may be open sooner.  It's not a michelin restaurant by any means but the terrace makes up for it.

Agree on Joe's ice cream.  has to be from their store where it's fresh though

It says on Wales Online "the bar and hotel will remain closed".....not sure the restaurant is separate? I would have thought the water damage will have impacted everything

Nice cliff climbing off the beach at Three Cliffs Bay as well if you're that way inclined.

It's a nice walk down the valley to Pwll Du beach, with the added bonus you can confuse your mates by telling them you have just been to Blackpool!

Well, we're back.

Did the walk to Worms Head which was spectacular.

Mumbles / Oystermouth / Joe's

Crazy golf at Pembury (I won) and Kidwelly castle

Broughton Bay / Blue Pool / Spaniards Rocks

Carreg Cennen Castle (spectacular - take a torch) / Dinefwr Castle and house

Swansea was a bit of a dump and it rained. I suspect it would have been a dump in the dry though.

We also squeezed in Raglan, Caerphilly and Cardiff Castles over 2 days on the way down.

Ah ha, I'm off there this weekend for a bit of a reunion do with some very old friends, quite reassuring to know that Swansea is still a bit of a dump 🤣

It is but it's my dump so....

🤣

Glad you enjoyed. Gower is glorious, and one of the reasons why I'm often inadvertently critical of other tourist places in the UK, like North Wales. It's hard to spend money on a week's holiday up there when we have Gower on our doorstep. (and Pembs an hour and a bit away.)

After work last night we wandered down to Caswelll beach. The sun was setting, the sea was warm, we found dustbin lid jellyfish (or the remains of), and managed not to guzzle ice-cream or go for a beer. (We deliberately avoided anywhere that we might be tempted to enjoy a drink with a sea view!)

....I like it here.

As you could if you were in Dublin.

One set of my great grand-parents lived at Cefn Stylle Farm - along the road from there I think. You didn't happen to have ice-cream in  Gower Gelato in Penclawdd?

No sorry, Joe's in Mumbles.

Cefn Stylle Road? Or as Google Maps called it Kevin Stuffly.

This is a very useful thread.  We've just booked camping at Oxwich for the weekend with family (probably not room or time to take bikes and windsurfers) and we're meeting our daughter Friday night the premier inn in Swansea right next to Joe's ice cream.

Just need a recommendation for salt marsh lamb for the barbecue on Saturday.

There isn't a Premier Inn next to Joe's?

You can get it direct from the breeder in the farm at Woebly Castle, or Tuckers in Mumbles has it

Oh yes, but jeez, they don't want to stay in Llansamlet!  It's most definitely not Gower. 🤣
