Get familiar with some of the history so you can make the best of

walking round the walls, stopping for a break at the Fortezzo Medici

visiting the duomo

Also - just wander round the streets it's that kind of a place

That's the best part of a day taken care of.

don't get ice cream from places just off the Campo Square. €35 for four. I may have mentioned this before, but I'd have put them back on the counter and walked off, if it wasn't for the fact that the lady serving was possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

So in hindsight - get a cheap CC deal and buy ice creams from a place just off the Campo.

(seriously - just walk around, it's a lovely town. If necessary walk to the bottom of the hill and then run back up pretending you've got a short gap over the peloton in the Stada Bianchi classic)

Exactly what BigBut said.... honestly... it's that sort of place.

Just do the tourist stuff... don't fight it...

Don't know if you have accom fully taken care of but I'd highly recommend Pisa for a night or two....

Hardly anyone stops overnight so when the busses leave it's a different place.

The farmers' coop (capsi.it) is worth a visit - first time I visited it was a dusty, open fronted shop selling unwashed veg and plain bottled olive oil. It's a lot s****ier now, but still sells mainly local produce.  Apart from that, wear shoes that are good for a day on pavement.  Gelati are sensibly priced once you’re a couple of streets from the Campo.

Other nice local foods include panforte, pan rustica (I think - it’s a kind of ham and cheese muffin) from Miccoli, GROM gelati.  I believe the restaurant in the Orto de Pecci is nice, and in a garden just outside the town.

Sit in the Campo - seems a pretty popular thing to do. The Torre del Mangia gives a good view of the town, as does the Facciatone, even if you don’t want to do the cathedral and art stuff.

The tower is cool, otherwise it's lovely to wander and stop for a beer every few hundred metres.

Torture museum? Went a few years ago. Quite interesting.

Cannot really remember what we did when there apart from that. I think we wandered a bit. Beautiful place.

Yep, as above, wander around. Buy coffees, etc away from the Piazza del Campo

Palio is 16th August
