We're off to Rome for a week and was looking for some ideas of what we can do.
The wife's got a list of things she wants to try to do, but I'm trying to come up with some stuff that's a) cheap and 2) not a real toursity thing.
If anyone's been and has any little gems of places to check out I'd love to hear abou them.
We're going with our 2 boys (11 & 9, both football mad so may try to get tickets to Lazio v Napoli at the last minute next Sunday) so it's a bonus if it's kid friendly
go to DeAugustos restaurant.
if you arent early, there will be a queue despite other restaurants in the square being quite empty.
where's that? Is it the one on Piazza dè Renzi?
The kids love Pizza and have said they're having at least one a day (if not more!) so eating options are welcomed
If you go to the Colosseum, get your tickets from the Forum a couple of hundred yards up the road, much quicker. Try to avoid the people dressed as Centurions
If you go to the Sistine Chapel, book your tickets online in advance; you'll then be able to go right to the front of the very long queue
The Basilica at St Peters is full of amazing art and sculptures but felt to me about as spiritual as my local library
The Forum and Palatine Hill are amazing and even better on a sunset/ after dark tour.
We stayed in Campo di Fiori when we visited, and found this restaurant to be great and not as expensive as others -
As other have said book Sistine Chapel tickets online, even so it will be packed.
just do the same as everyone else. Of course.

that's not really the point of the post though is it 🙂
We went a couple of years ago with our 8 and 10 year olds- thought they'd be bored silly, but both loved it.
Don't underestimate the enjoyment of just meandering around, having the odd gelato and espresso here and there- there's something to look at around just about every corner. Spend the evenings walking. Don't get hung up about finding great restaurants.
Stuff that mightn't be on your list that we enjoyed.. but you mightn't 🙂
walk to the Pyramid of Cestius
hire bikes and cycle the Appian way/visit the catacombs
visit Bartolucci toy shop
visit the park at Villa Borghese- hire roller blades, boats, bikes (you can get those things that seat the whole family.)

"when in Rome, do as the Romans do"...
