Off for a week in Gran Canaria next weekend and seeking the wisdom of STW.

Biking time may be limited as Mrs won’t be keen on me disappearing for hours so also interested in hikes and parts of the island to visit and things to do.

Hire a car and drive to the Roque Nublo. Park up and it's a short walk to the lump of rock.

I thought the scenery was impressive on the island.

Don't forget to reserve your place to visit Roque Nublo ..

Also, be careful walking the dunes of Maspalomas ..

Hire a car and head into the hills. Quite sketchy roads in parts, but lovely little villages to stop at, plus views are lovely in places.

The west of the island has completely different weather to the east, it’s a lot greener over there. There’s some nice forests to go walking in.

It’s also the only place in the northern hemisphere where coffee can be grown, there’s a farm you can get a look around. Its somewhere in the north west of the island, I can’t remember its name.

Crazy golf and drinking. That's what me and the missus did.

We went again the year after and did the same.

As others have said, hire a car and drive into the interior, amazing landscape, bit like how you might imagine Arizona.

was there about 18 months ago with the family but also took my road bike, the cycling is fantastic (crappy road surface notwithstanding).

We did an off-road buggy tour which was absolutely brilliant and my only wish was that it was longer: https://www.buggypirates.com/

If you're a foodie, there's some absolutely banging restaurants in Puerto de Mogan - there's a meats and wine shop called Los Hermanos which is absolutely 10/10.

The dunes at Maspalomas are lovely, but they're also a VERY popular destination for explicit outdoor activities between gentlemen. So, I'd avoid that in the evenings unless that's your thing.

"Walk the dunes at Maspalomas."

Last time I was there we happened upon a group of men doing something just one letter away from the above.

Rent a road bike from FreeMotion and ride up top.

There is a deserted hippy beach on the west side of the island that is worth the walk

"The west of the island has completely different weather to the east, it’s a lot greener over there. There’s some nice forests to go walking in."
The north is much greener than the south.
I used to guide there and I much preferred riding in the north of the island due to the variation in vegetation.

If you can swing it, hire a bike for a day or two and ride up the "serenity" road climb from Mogan. Mainly due to how hot it was in April I was out before the sun came up and back just as the Mrs was getting settled in on the sun loungers. It's such a beautiful ride it'd be a shame to miss it. Freemotion had a shop in Puerto Mogan at the time, assume it's still there. Really nice resort.

If it's windy (as it often is this time of year then Pozo Isquierdo is the base for a lot of world-class windsurfers and wingfoilers. As a windsurfer with 40 years plus experience they're often doing jumps and stunts that I can't even start to imagine doing. I chatted to Bjorn Dunkerbeck there once. A 42 times world champ, but off the water one of the nicest people.
Worth popping along if it's blowing hard, looks like a disused quarry if not.

Lots of great trails for walking and Gravel / MTB around there. We did a gravel ride which included taking our bikes through a 300m underground tunnel between two valleys!

Park with care before market day, which the otherwise smart ticket machines don't know about. Or otherwise risk having a puzzled partner saying there must be an optical illusion as there appears to be a stall where the car is parked, then pay for a taxi to the next village police station to join a line of resigned northern Europeans queuing for the privilege of paying a couple of hundred euros or so . Ask me how I came by this handy local knowledge .

Other than that Mogan is brilliant . Second to the road bike climbs out of the village. Other you do need a car to get about. Las Palmas is I think the 8th biggest city in Spain and worth a wander.
