I'll be going to Brussels soon on business and am just after some suggestions of good bars/places to go in the evenings - don't need restaurants as that's already organised. Places with lots of different Belgian beers to sample would be particularly good.

I'll be staying in the Diegem area (Near the airport - oh, the glamour...) but am planning to travel into town.

Thanks STW!

I would't bother - a dirty hub of a place IME. People come and go for work and seemingly leave the streets strewn with dogs--t.

Take the train to Gent (30 mins). Much nicer.

I've spent plenty of time in Ghent already but don't really have time to go there on this trip...

Fair enough. TBH, Brussels has struck me as a working place only. It may be better in the week (I've only ever been through over weekends).

You'll need Marge on this post as well.

Oh man, get beered up. There are some great old school bars in the St Gilles and Ixelles areas. Mort Subite in the centre is fun too. You'll get chatting to the locals really quickly who always seem super friendly.
My missus studied architecture, so we've done a few of the Art Nouveau tours, which I found really interesting, despite not having much interest in that sort of thing. If you like that then La Maison Buren is great too, with a lovely restaurant called De Hoof (or something simlar) nearby.
Ghent and Bruges are fun to visit for a few hours. There's a brilliant bike shop called Plum in Ghent which has a wee museum in its basement filed with old-school bike porn.

Just remembered the place in St Gilles, it's called La Brasserie Verschueren. We got tanked up on Rochefort Dix and I was convinced I could speak French, attempted to test this theory on some friendly locals, tried to steal some posters off the wall, watched a paralytic man try to get on his locked bicycle for ten minutes, then sprinted back to the hotel; woke up the next day with no hangover. The magic of Belgian Beer.
La Porteuse D'eau is nearby too which is very pretty inside, but is quite touristy. Both have the required million beers to sample.
On a side, but related note, if anyone lives in London and likes Belgian Beer, you need to go to Nelson Wines in Colliers Wood. Just discovered it. It's life changing...

I went to Brussells at the start of the year and it's nowhere near as bad as people are suggesting on this thread.

Lots of nice bars and of course decent beer and definitely not any more or less dirty than any other big European city I've visisted.

As mentioned above, Delerium is good but a bit touristy. Other things that might be worth visiting are the atomium (short ride on the metrolink) or there is a free war museum not far from the European Parliament, lots of planes, tanks and other stuff if that's your bag.

Plenty of nice bars when we went and a lot of them were open til 8am the following morning, decent music, crowd etc.

Grand Place is worth a visit too.

Any suggestions for Rotterdam. I've got 24hrs here due to meeting finishing earlier than planned.

I have "Smoke Dope" suggested so far...

Spend taxpayers' hard earned cash?

Fiddle your expenses?

Have affairs?

Drink beer!

Eat moules!

Enjoy the gravy train?

....all allegedly!!

It's not that kind of business and it'll be my own money I'm spending in the evening...

Only one place to go - Moeder Lambic. More beers than you can imagine but best is to go for what is on the blackboard. Often they will have small local stuff that you just won't see elsewhere. The place can range from quiet and drab to noisy and crowded. Has gone down a bit since its heyday but still great imho

Menu and map here http://www.moederlambic.com/bars/fr/menuhome/2_0_1_place

edit:just checked and it's next to the Horta metro station (line 3) but still a bit of a journey depending on exactly where you are staying
