I just bought a bmx for my son.  He was saving by doing chores.  I matched his savings (which we took but have just paid them into his secret Savings account) and we bought a £36 Bike from eBay together which I collected this evening.

The thing is, he so made up with it it’s a joy to watch and the thing is he doesn’t care what the make is, what parts or on it, what it weighs and so forth.  It reminded me of being a kid again and not even thinking to worry about these things, just the innocent grin factor of your dad getting you a new bike, and then going home and jumping of kerbs and stuff.

It’s been sprayed so I’ve no idea what make it is either and it’s as heavy as ****, happy days!

I fell out a tree recently. It felt awful familiar.

This heat/sunshine

there wasn’t a single summer that didn’t feel like this as a child.

Kate Bush.

I had a couple of her tracks on compilations as a kid. I was utterly mesmerised by them at the time and remain so today.

I saw a kid walking along a wall wearing wellies today.  She jumped off the end and it was clear it hurt her feet. And I felt again that sharp slapping pain in the soles of my feet that comes from jumping down further than you thought in crap footwear. You know, back when you wore whatever your parents bought you and you were always pushing boundaries / misjudging heights / getting things wrong AKA growing up.

Definitely, combined with that smell when heavy and cold rain hits tarmac that has been heated for days on end!

Listening to tracks from the Rumours album this evening, takes me back to when we lived in Dolgellau for a few years from ~1982, long before I began to appreciate Fleetwood Mac or any other bands/individuals at the age of ~9. Can recall the LP being played on an old family friend's hi-fi in the evenings.

Well, what a coincidence..

I’m sitting having a beer in my favourite Pub of all Time, in the South Downs and a Buick Electra 225 rolls into the paddock and the guy that’s driving it is an author of some reputation...

I comment “wow, I love your car.. it reminds me of my youth” and he says “do you read books?” I said “why yes, real books not just online”

He goes over to his Awesome car, and picks out his latest book.. and hands it over to me and signs it.

Awe

Some.

The smell of isopon filler makes me think of my grandad's garage, every time.

And not young youth, but I work at the same university I studied at and it's resit time, you can smell the fear and it sends me right back.

I think it's doing the same things I did in my youth. I was mostly a good, academically orientated, youth who went through cubs, scouts, DoE award and did some community wildlife stuff too as well as helping dad and grandad with a great many woodworking and DIY projects.

For me going camping or stepping out of doors with a map and a rucksack of stuff or pushing a boat or kayak out into the sea, a lake or river or hopping on my bike always makes me feel like a teenager again.

We just got back from a holiday that (even for us) was unusually outdoorsy. Mrs g-d has commented repeatedly what a different person the outdoors makes me (in a good way). I think I may have to face the fact that I've not really grown up.

Riding my bike.

Definitely reminds me of my youth before they tilted up all those hills a few more degrees, when headwinds were all gentle zephyrs, and miles felt the same length as kilometres now.

Adventure playgrounds, must have been the most dangerous places on earth: tyres, inner tubes to jump onto, a massively high zip line and local bullies.

I received a Lego rally car for father's day, as soon I opened the box I was taken back 30 years.

Playing with my toddler daughter does the same, little feelings of youth pop back to me.

Listening to Rush Permanent Waves takes me back to 16 years old and a great year with all the usual mistakes a 16 year old makes.

My iPod did something stupid yesterday and ended up deleteing all the music during a back up.

So when I woke at 4 this morning I started throwing a fresh 64GB of stuff on there. Just scrolling though the covers on my iTunes took me waay back...

Cowhorn handlebars. My second bike in the early 80s (and the first one that I had a say in choosing) was a steel framed Raleigh fixie with cowhorn handlebars and a Brooks saddle, bought from a part-time bodger in the village. Weighed approx 100 tons. Spent all my time either tinkering with it or riding it. Put on the tiniest little mudguards. Painted it green. Rode it round the village and Dales bridleways until the frame (top tube) broke. The replacement, was an equally heavy bike bought from a mate onto which I transferred the cowhorn handlebars. Painted it the same green. Last rode about 10 years ago, it’s now in the loft (might need a hacksaw to get it out). Cowhorn handlebars still make me think of the 70s/80s though.

Sucking the flavour/colour from an ice lolly to leave a crumbly, clear block of ice. I’ve just done it and it’s taken me back years!

The taste of 7-Up (or Sprite nowadays?) and the smell of sun cream takes me back to family holidays in Greece.
