Anyone know Thessaloniki well? After a week relaxing by a pool, I imagine my teenage boys are going to hate me even more for organising a couple of city days.
Any great museums, antiquities, coffee shops, restaurants.
Anything really.
Air bnb is half way between Ataturk museum and Eptapyrgio Fortress.
One of my colleagues comes from Thessaloniki - I'll ask her later on.
Ace, thanks.
Watched Rick Steins long weekend show from there the other day. Seemed to be historic stuff everywhere and good food of course.
As received from my colleague:
Next to Ataturk’s house (which is the museum) there is a nice coffee place called Prigipos. If interested in churches..Rotonda and Agia Sophia.
The Byzantine museum is quite interesting, and there is a restaurant there too called ‘B’, maybe a bit expensive compared to the restaurants you find in the city centre.
Cheap food: Kouskoura street. Souvlaki
Valawritou and Ladadika are two areas very close to each other with many coffee places, and restaurants..depending what you like.
If you just want to walk..from Limani towards the White Tower and further east is quite beautiful,
For shopping: Tsimiski street, parallel to it (moving towards the sea) is Mitropolews street, and then Proxenou Koromila.
There is a bakery/coffee place called ‘Terkenlis’ , there are a few in the city..A type of cake (but it’s not a cake) called ‘tsoureki’ is popular there.
The city centre is small, you don’t need to take a bus or taxi, but if you have to get one taxis are cheap.
There is a cool water park not far, worth a trip.
Great fish restaurant - Kritikos - in Panorama that is just outside Thessaloniki. Incredible chocolate souffle from ΚΛΕΑ (Klea) just down the road for a drink and dessert after!
Take a walk up to the old walls - great view over the city
White tower is worth a trip up; a lot of interesting history of the city in there and all presented in an engaging manner.
As mentioned, there are generally lots of historic buildings, ruins, etc dotted around so deserves a bit of an aimless wander and see what you find!
Thanks all, we’re there now, in an Airbnb over looking the city. Full day tomorrow so we’ll be taking in as much as I can.
aP, cheers and please thank your colleague.
No worries, will do, have a great time.
