Say I was looking for a new job* and had the following skills and experience and requirements, what jobs could I do? Doesn't have to be in same areas as below, just highlighting what experience I have without writing a CV...

Skills/Experience

- A levels in Physics, Maths and Further Maths

- Masters degree in Physics

- 10 years experience in IT
- 7 of those working in a varied Systems Engineer role
- Linux/RHEL mostly (RHCSA and RHCE qualified)
- Extensive LAMP dev work
- Decent Networking experience although no formal quals
- Some VMware experience
- Some Windows and AD environment experience

- 10+ years as a Bike Mech, 2 of those running my own workshop
- road and MTB

- 2 years helping to run a charity (cycling related) in spare time,
- workshop/mechanics
- event support etc.
- ride leader training in progress

- Experience of delivering training in both the Mechanic and IT environments, including producing course material.

Requirements

- Commutable by bike ( < 20miles ), ie: no driving jobs
- Normal or flexible hours, ie: no 12hr shift work
- £25k min
- preferably NOT office based
- in Devon/South West!

*obviously this may or may not be on my mind, but this is a purely theoretical post based on some discussions the other day about how people end up in careers that they don't expect...

You want a work from home linux support role really.

You don't want an office job but also don't want a road based job so the only option left is home work.

With your skills and qualifications you should be able to pick up a Linux admin role easy enough which in the Birmingham area is paying circa 40k for high end work. Depending on your location that will vary.

@somouk
Pretty much what I already do, which wasn't I expected to be doing given my previous background.

big bucks not important to me, £25k set as minimum as that's my calculated minimum requirement to continue paying current mortgage and bills.

You want a work from home

arrrgh! no that would be worse than an office job!

amedias, so where do you want to work? You've said not on the road, not in an office and not at home. I'm guessing you're thinking outside but not sure where your skills would fit

byt preferably not office based, I guess what I mean is 'not desk bound 8hrs a day'

commercial, outdoors, industrial, mixed, cross-site must surely be options?

I'm trying to steer this away from what 'I would want' and more into 'What could someone with these skills do' if that makes sense?

Well your background isn't so different to mine, I work in quantative based finance which means London in UK terms.

To be honest given your cycle to work Devon/South West requirement I would be tempted to research the different companies in the area and see what you might do for them. You could do tech support / development for a government business like NHS etc or a small/medium sized business, I don't know the employment landscape in the region so cannot suggest too much that's specific.

I doubt you've a physics degree.

[s]Theoretically[/s] Hypothetically speaking, what job could I do?

Have you thought about instructional design? How much course-ware have you developed? Have you used any powerpoint plug-in [s]packages[/s] viruses like Articulate or Storyline?

If our budget gets approved for this year, we'll have an opening for someone to develop IT course material. As it's all home based, you can live anywhere in the world, so long as it's not APAC-J (my boss, in Detroit, can't cope with the time difference). The company's good, the pay is great and the job role is flexible and varied. I'm assuming we have some sort of online career portal I could point you at in a PM.

pah, I said Physics, not English 😛

More to the point I was asking what I can do with those skills (ie: proven to be possible), not what I hypothetically could do if I had those skills.

Yet you don't know the difference between a theory and a hypothesis.

My grasp of the English language may not have adequately conveyed my intent, but I'd argue this IS a theoretical situation:

'person A has skills X,Y,Z, what jobs could they do'

not the hypothetical version which would be more like:

'imagine a situation where person A has skills X,Y,Z, what jobs do you think they might be able to do'

The bit about looking for a new job may be conjecture as it may or may not be true, as per my original post, but the rest of it isn't.

But thank you Woppit, for your insightful and useful answer to my post. If you've got nothing useful to say and just want to carry on arguing or sniping then please feel free to email me directly, but I'd respectfully ask you to keep this thread relevant to my original question.

Cheers Daffy, thats where I did my degree and I do keep an eye on there, but as I said I'm more interested in the 'what Jobs could I do with that skillset' to open my mind a bit rather than looking to see what's out there.

Masters degree in physics?

Teacher!

(Seriously there, my daughters science teachers are both from the postgrad degree and some life skills and other work background and she says they are far more engaging than the rest)
