I’m really tempted to do a mad dash from Pembrokeshire to see Bob Mould play solo in The Garage in Islington at the end of September.

Gig is on a Sunday night and I have friends in Theale that I could stay with.

Sat nav reckons an hour and a bit from Theale to Islington and there are a couple of car parks near by. What is the reality of driving in that part of London on a Sunday night? I haven’t driven east of Reading for a good few years!

I could go by train but the service gets patchy after 11pm and I don’t want to end up rushing off or missing the last train.

It'll be ok won’t it?

Park in Reading? More trains back from London. That's what I've done in the past, living in Newbury.

Drive to somewhere on the Tube network, park up there and get the Tube in.

Given where you're staying somewhere on either the Piccadilly, District or Metropolitan would probably be your best bet.

What are the benefits of tube or train from closer in? Time? Or avoiding the hassle of driving in West London?

Avoiding the hassle of driving and parking. Even on a Sunday night it'll be a pain around Islington.

It also gives you a bit of time post gig to chill out a little before driving again.

Despite having lived in London for most of my early life, and knowing many rat runs and cheeky places to park, I don't drive in for gigs. Just not worth the hassle.

Fair enough. Please indulge a proper bumpkin here and tell me the best option for parking on a tube line direct for Highbury and Islington station.

I swear the SE and London is more foreign to me than most of Europe! 😂

I've used Chorelywood to get into that bit of London in the past.

I think Uxbridge Intu is closest to you from Thealse, and it closes at 1am on Sundays.

Either of those, you take the Metropolitan Line to Kings Cross St Pancras, then change to the Victoria line for Highbury and Islington.

Leave car in Theale, taxi to Reading station. Last train back is normally 1am taxi back to Theale.

Park at Gunnersbury (just at the end of the M4 with easy parking to the south on a Sunday) then take the overground with Victoria / District line being a back up. You’ve got about 1 minute on very easy local roads after the motorway.

DonkeysLed nearly had it. For journey there train from Theale to Reading/London, train back to Reading, taxi to
Theale

Don’t forget when looking at trains you need to check Monday morning not Sunday night, seems to be 3 latest being 1:34
