The Wrong Kind Of Snow has yet to begin falling but already some rail services for tomorrow have been cancelled.

What a weak and wimpy nation we have become.

...or one that doesn't see fit to invest in Scandinavian-style snow precautions for a couple of days a year in most areas ...some years?

"ARCTIC BRITAIN'S COLD BLASTS!" are only a "news-worthy" gift to the "news" outlets because they are relatively rare. I wonder how much SNOW MAYHEM! there will actually be tomorrow?

To save me stating the obvious:

It's called preparation... High chance of disruption of what's a pretty busy system, delays cause delays cause delays so you put a bit of slack back into the timing.

If you'd prefer, I'm sure they could try and run a full service, and then end up more disrupted.

Snow doesn't make my wife angry with our dogs. Rain does.

Rain means mud means muddy footprints on the kitchen floor means cleaning floor means anger. Snow just means a bit of water.

To be honest you'll think they would run ghost trains through the night
to clear and de ice rails to keep the services running and NOT be allowed
and be fined for feeble excuses.

In the local pub where I'm staying near Bristol and someone has just told me that 6 local schools have announced they are closed tomorrow 'just in case'. Bloody ridiculous!

When I was a teenager in the 80's I lived in a Peak District village and we had proper winters. Maybe one day each winter we didnt go to school - and that was just because the bus couldn't get up the hill

In keeping with the name, there will be no Snow at Snow Mayhem.

We may get a foot of snow in SE Wales. That's a lot to arrive all in one go. My father in law who lives in an actually cold snowy part of the US thinks it's a lot, it causes disruption there too.

Other countries do get disruption, it just doens't make the headlines.

Had no problem getting to pub last night on my bike. 6 miles apart from 300 yards on a ice free A road, the rest frozen solid rural back roads. Only thing I was scared of was the cars. About 6 passed me (ignoring A road) and 1 on the way back. Got off the road to be on safe side. The benefit of ice tyres. The only time I come of is when I stop and put my foot down and fall over. Think I need something for my feet. PS Linconshire Wolds.
PPS Tyres grip on very steep hills, Although it is short the road out of my village is monster steep and exceptionaly icy. Cars regularly run Through a neighbours hedge at bottom of hill.

Well apparently one of the local schools has already been declared shut tomorrow, despite the complete lack of any show (well, a couple of flakes today). I seriously cant believe they've closed it based on the possibility of snow.
Oh and im on the Isle of Wight, FFS

What a weak and wimpy nation

If it helps you come to terms with it the same thing happens else where when there is exceptional weather, its not just in the UK.

Ahhh, I'm looking out of the window at semi clear skies and some twinkling of stars and +2C so it's about right for some of that white stuff..

Im in That London.

Ohh yeah and the trains I heard today around these parts are on "limited" service.

What a weak and wimpy nation

Only difference between us and the rest of the world is that people here seem to love whining like hell about how we can't cope with snow.

Honestly, get a f'in grip and post something useful, interesting or funny.

To be honest you'll think they would run ghost trains through the night

They do.

And they heat the points.

And they place people into Exceptional Weather Action Teams to keep trains running.

They also position extra standby loco's to rescue trains that might become stranded for any reason. With drivers.

They also reduce the speed of the trains so that the lumps of ice that form on them at speed don't damage (incapacitate) the trains.

All of which places the system under great stress; lots of extra hours worked by all staff, slower service means fewer trains can fit on the network, fewer drivers available, maintenance staff at the limit of their hours etc etc.

When I look at what happens we're far from the wimpy nation we're accused of being; I would go as far as to say that in my experience we're better at planning for and at dealing with exceptional weather than many other nations.

We had a dusting (~5mm on grass and paths, but roads are clear) overnight in the western & northern Manchester areas.

Bike commuting was pleasant, but uneventful this morning.

In anticipation of an ABSOLUTE SNOWMAGEDDON SHOCKA!!! later, I'm hoping that the trusty Commuter cyclocrosser will get me home more quickly and more pleasantly than a car.
