I've got a bit of a thing for leather mangles. The friendship bracelet things we all used to wear back in the late 80's, early 90's. I usually pick the odd one up in market stalls for around £5-£6 a pop. On the Temu app, I found myself spending £12 and getting around 25 of the things, including a couple of nice bike related ones (coloured cord with a split chainlink) and a really nice Type 1 Diabetic one that'll I'll now wear when out on my bike.

Haven't seen anything else yet, but if you want knock-off Chinese stuff, Temu would appear to be the place to go!

I've gone down that rabbit hole. It's cheap and it's not the greatest but set your expectations low and you might be impressed.
So far I've got a 1.8m dog lead which is actually very good. A 10m dog lead which is pretty flimsy but bought as a tow rope/tether for between paddle boards. A ball and inflatable ring for our oversize paddling pool. A couple of bits for the end of the drill like a dust collector and bit holder that can go on a bit of an angle. Refill reel for the label maker. All would have been roughly twice the price on Amazon and they're arrived within 2 weeks.
I think there's a £10 minimum order though which is where they get you.

I've been getting loads of adverts for this recently,  and I suspect lots more now I've opened this thread.

Is it a new thing or have I just not been targeted before? I assume its an Alibaba rip-off.

I also seem to get ads for Temu on various platforms, with random "luxury" consumer goods at ridiculous prices... a stylish garden furniture set for... £2.38? Ok.

I've applied the age-old logic of "if it looks too good to be true..." and gone nowhere near it.

There's a very moral question about how their business model works - are the people making these items fairly compensated?

I've seen some adverts and looked like cheap shit I don't need. I opened this thread to check and it does indeed look like cheap shit I don't need. 🙄

Climate crisis? What climate crisis?

Just a big fat no from me. Does my head when my daughter buys stuff from shien and the like. It's just wrong for the world.

Can't seem to escape from their ads on YouTube. Something popped up the other day advertising sandals for hamsters...

I've had endless adverts for it as well. The last thing I want is some mass produced plastic shite from China, it's one of the many reasons I refuse to use Amazon. The eldest wanted loom bands (remember them?) but we managed to get him to agree that buying them would be bad for environmental reasons.

Probably not, but see also high street clothes, mobile phones, kids toys, coffee and loads more stuff we all use every day.  I'm not saying we shouldn't try to buy ethically, but I'm not sure singling out Temu specifically is fair.

1) it's cheap plastic shite

2) evil Chinese data-hoovering app TikTok was put in the spotlight and restricted in the US for its intelligence-gathering risk. Shortly after that, another Chinese data-hoovering app arrives with a massive marketing budget (ads at the Superbowl, ads everywhere online) out of nowhere. You don't need to be too paranoid to be suspicious 🚁🚁🚁

I just fell into this rabbit hole

The last thing I want is some mass produced plastic shite from China,

Normally I'd be saying this, except I got sucked in by an advert for a bearing press that looked identical to one I was looking at buying elsewhere. The ad said 86% off.

So I clicked through, wandered around the strange world of temu, discovered that if I dither for long enough, the price of things in my basket goes down even more.

Added a few other bits to get it to £10, while the app had a good scrape around the insides of my phone.

The bearing press eventually cost (wait for it)... £1.52

Paid

Uninstalled

Shall report back what turns up

It grated my gears seeing all the adverts for Wish.com featuring a very androgynous/non-binary teen considering the way the CCP treats non-gender conforming people.

But yeah, basically another Chinese state-backed data harvesting operation with a sideline in environmentally criminal plastic tat.

Oh and I think it's 100% fair to single Temu out as their gargantuan advertising budget is pushing the 'buy more disposable crap' message harder and further than anyone else right now.

Bump.

My OH is mithering me to check out Temu. She's setting up a childminding business and has seen a bunch of toys for next to no money, I'm very much of the mind that as someone else said "if it sounds too good to be true..." with a side order of being concerned about buying lead-painted toys filled with razorblades for a couple of preschoolers in her care.

What sayeth the STW Collective two months on?

Shall report back what turns up

What turned up, are you still waiting?

@Cougar - was one a cuddly tardigrade? Gave me flashbacks to the mycelium plot line in ST:Discovery, which was reason enough to close the tab…

with the greatest of respect, are you an idiot? 😂 Temu ships direct from China, if it is UKCA approved you can buy me a 13p hat which I will then consume. Just buy a load of Fisher-Price stuff or whatever from charity shops.

Yes?

She's asked me to ask. Here I am, asking. Wasn't my idea.

This is quite a funny riposte, but...

The US House Select Committee accused Temu of avoiding sanctions under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which restricts some Chinese goods linked to human rights abuses in Xinjiang.
“Temu is doing next to nothing to keep its supply chain free from slave labour,” said Republican senator and committee chair Mike Gallagher, referring to allegations of forced labour transfer programs.

Never heard of it until today, was something on radio 4 at lunchtime about it harvesting your data and some old dear being asked what she'd bought. I'm solidly in the don't buy tat direct from China so won't be engaging.

@petefromearth is too busy Tweeting pro-CCP messages from his basement. One touch of his £2 bearing press and some strange fervour overwhelmed him...

As above, I think its stuff made by Uyghur slaves out. Likely made of toxic chemicals that don't pass stringent UK/EU guidelines. I'd personally give the app a miss. There's enough cheap crap to buy in Poundland et al.

I googled that report and most discussion around it seemed to be one person going 'slavery is bad', while 99 people said 'It's not ideal, but there's no ethical consumption under capitalism so whaddaya gonna do?'
It felt rather like many climate change debates tbh
