True, I meant more someone who can exploit his weaknesses rather than he doesn't have any, just seems to smother everyone and not give them a chance, but there's still some guys that have a decent chance!
wiggles - Memberjust seems to smother everyone and not give them a chance, but there's still some guys that have a decent chance!
Yeah he's relentless, and brilliant but his opponents can* choose to pull guard work a sweep from deep half, roll for a knee or turtle/give their backs in order to advance or work from those positions as opposed to constantly fighting the take down against the fence or getting mauled in half guard. Khabib's opponents seem so fixated on getting away from himm that they invariably become exhausted in the clinch.
Dos Anjos was actually able to somewhat stifle Khabib by pulling guard, he also had a couple of decent guillotine attempts as well as a kimura attempt, he went for deep half sweeps and imanari rolls to escape and made them work.
There are people with dangerous guards**. Additionally someone with good elbows** might be able to do what Travis Browne did to Josh Barnett and Garbriel Gonzaga as they worked for take downs.
*Obvious caveat regarding it being easier said than done.
**Ferguson.
Not impossible for sure the elbow thing, but Travis Brown has got so much leverage and height which is why they work so well (Jones has great success with elbows for the same reason).
Khabib's got to fight Tony now for sure. Great match up, and even more so now if his nutrition/weight cutting is under control as we're being lead to believe.
Another tough night for Holly. I like her but can't help but think retirement is probably not too far off.
Jackson/Wink now have something like 19 losses in a row in UFC competition. Don't think anyone saw that one coming!
Just watched Nurmagomedov vs. Barboza for the 2nd time.
Wouldn't have been surprised to see Barboza's corner stop the fight between rounds. He got the moral compensation of making it to the end and landing the head-kick in the last round, but at what a cost.
Agree that Tony has the best chance against him, but I couldn't feel optimistic after watching that. Also remember that Lee had some success holding him down before he ended up knackered.
arrpee - MemberAgree that Tony has the best chance against him, but I couldn't feel optimistic after watching that. Also remember that Lee had some success holding him down before he ended up knackered.
Lee is a half decent striker but Tony was beating him up on the feet. Lee is a traditional collegiate wrestler in that he times his takedowns off his opponents, Khabib on the other hand just uses his strikes to close the distance to initiate any kind of clinch, then chain wrestle to win the takedown.
Ferguson was elbowing Lee even when he was airborne, and he was aggressive with elbows off his back, ultimately allowing him the triangle. Michael Johnson also had good success early in his fight with Khabib by feinting the knee every time Khabib looked to shoot, keeping him on his feet allowed him to connect with Khabib and hurt him.
Khabib's game isn't massively complex - clinch at all costs. Work for the takedown. Control posture, by removing posting arms, ground and pound. He's just relentless at it. Daniel Cormier and Ben Askren have similar styles. Over commitment to the clinch could see him vulnerable to guillotines too. I could even see Tony going for a jumping guillotine like Brian Oretega finished Swanson with - even if he fails he still ends up in guard.
Jeff Novitsky on with Rogan. Should be interesting.
He's been in before and it was great
This is perhaps the best podcast of all time. That is all 🙂
Danaher. 24/7 rashguard.
Reminds me of Swiss Tony.
Joe was patient with all the questions!
And he needed to be! 🙂
I've got a few quid on the underdog double of Stipe and Volkan.
For me Stipe vs Ngannou is 50/50. Stipe knocks out more people than Ngannou
I know Volkan is a big underdog (and I'm probably throwing my money away) but I have a feeling that he might just sneak a hard punch out of the clinch and stun DC
Rumble stunned DC but didnt capitalise. Jones stunned him and did. (Yes both with headkicks but Volkan hits hard!)
ctk - MemberReminds me of Swiss Tony.
But instead of cars he deals in second hand death 🙂
Did anyone watch that podcast and not want to train jiu-jitsu?
ctk - MemberI've got a few quid on the underdog double of Stipe and Volkan.
Who the hell knows. There's good odds on later round finishes - seems the odds makers are very skeptical that Ngannou can win past the 3rd. 7/2 on Oezdemir by tko seems like decent odds too. I can's see him submitting DC or taking him to a decision.
31/10 for DC by decision seems like an ok bet. The rest of the cards looks like the UFC are really trying to stack the deck for home wins, which rarely works though.
Jimjam: thanks for posting that Daher pod cast.
I immediately checked for the nearest BJJ dojos/clubs whatever they're called!

Ha! Awesome. Generally clubs is the preferred term and just instructor or coach. BJJ doesn't really stand on formalities that much. Danaher is unusual even in his use of traditional Japanese terminology.
The ngannou hype train hits a stumbling block! Stipe was pretty much written off before last night. Chuffed to see him prove them wrong
Good to see Stipe snatch the belt off Dana and get his corner man to put it on him.

Absolutely. Stipe was still clearly pissed off at the press conference, and with good reason.
Glad for Stipe, I was rooting for him but also expected him to win. I wonder what next for Stipe and Ngannou? Werdum vs one or the other I reckon. Dana wants DC vs Stipe!
Dana can piss off.
DC won't go up to heavyweight as Cain is coming back.
Stipe vs Ngannou 2 maybe?
Or maybe every champion should just take over a year off and get boxed up by Floyd. Seems WME are cool with that.
Well that was beautiful. As per my earlier post, Boston fighters 3 for 3. Annoyingly I missed out on £900 thanks to Rob Font and Stipe. Hey ho.
Also, a shout out for DC's, the other one, superb mean girl commentary style.
Jamie - MemberAlso, a shout out for DC's, the other one, superb mean girl commentary style.
Volkan's face at the press conference...can't help but love DC.
DC fighting Stipe for the heavyweight title in July, apparently.
Can't watch; don't want to see either guy lose to the other.
Clearly the best fight for both though, I reckon.
I guess Cain ain’t coming back, or ar least for a while
Unless it was a ridiculous amount of cash offered, and after all the bullshit money fights so far, this is one I can get behind. This is going to be some proper wholesome MMA coming up with then doing TUF as well.
I guess DC retires after this.
if DC and Stipe can get a big pay day and DC can finally get the stigma of Jon Jones off then I guess it's all good. DC has a very real chance of winning imo.
I haven't watched all of last nights card (putting it on now) but I did watch Mirsad Bectic vs Godofredo Pepey....great fight. Check it out. The winner is my no1 future prospect 😉
All I’ll say is the way the winner of the main event finished the fight was stone cold killer.
Yep looked like he really meant it!
And wait, Holloway's going to fight him now? Wasn't he injured about a minute ago? Rough night for Max, I reckon. I'd love to have seen him move up to Lightweight and fight Khabib, but not at such short notice and coming off an injury.
Urgh. FFS
I like the fight, just not so soon. Poses Khabib some of the same problems as Tony - range, pace, durability. Arguably a better fundamental striker than Tony? If it were anyone but Khabib, I'd also meniton his takedown defence. Not as dangerous off his back as Tony. Still, he'll be quids in if he wins and sets up a rematch with McGregor

I don't think Holloway will enjoy anything like the same size advantages he did at lightweight but I also like the fight and think it's a fascinating match (shame about the time frame). Max switches stances all the time so if he can control the distance and not get pressed against the cage he could well get Khabib with a headkick / overhand left while he stalks him. Barboza got a few off against him but didn't land clean. Beyond that I don't fancy his chances if Khabib gets it to the ground. Holloway is ranked as a purple belt in BJJ, Khabib had his way with Rafael Dos Anjos who's a high level black belt.
The rest of the card is pretty awesome, but still.....Tony Khabib would have been something.
No doubt MCG would have stepped in if khabib got injured lol.
Three fights now cancelled as a result. Just as well he can afford a decent lawyer.
Cocaine's a helluva drug
WWE is helluva sport.
Holloway is out now.
What a disaster of a card.
Surely there must be a sum of money that'll convince Anthony Petis to step in?
Better yet, look past McGregor's indescretions and feed Nurmagomedov to Artem Lobov. See if "The Eagle" can handle the GOAT!🐐🐐🐐
Conor vs Khabib make it happen Dana! In a ****ing gym behind closed doors if need be lol.
Conor McGregor managing to make the local and UK news tonight for acting like a **** and yet you'd think he, and the sport of MMA didn't exist if you relied on their coverage of the sport.
Goddamn fake news.
I think I just sighed a hole in my soul.
Tony Ferguson is currently dancing around in a voodoo head-dress, doused in lukewarm chicken blood.
Silver linings and all that, it sets up Max vs Khabib down the road without all the caveats.
Tony Pettis and Al Iaquinta are apparently still in the mix to fight Khabib. It has to be Pettis, they can't leave Felder without a fight. Number 1 bullshit!
Raging Al stepping in to the main event.

Really think that Rose vs. Joanna should be the main event now. Far more meaningful fight as Iaquinta can't win the belt.
No I think it would be the only fitting way to end this week will be for Raging Al to win the main event by way of a Khabib self Ko during a failed take down.
Not been online for a bit. Thought the bus attack was the end of this week's weirdness.
Guess I was wrong.

Have you seen the latest embedded?
Just watching it now.
McNuggets could have really ****ed someone up with that sack barrow through the window. Prick.

Don't touch Conor's Artem! Ride or die. Is it wrong that I think a bare knuckle fight between him and Khabib in the car park would have been awesome?
Lee Murray v Tito Ortiz mk2.
Well, that was a another dominant win from Khabib, but I'm not one bit confident that Tony or Max wouldn't have given him terrible problems if he tried to stand with them like he did with Iaquinta. He was jabbing the face off him, but took way too many flush shots in response.
Conor also likely to feel emboldened watching that, although I'm not sure his cardio would have held up. Likely to be very dangerous in the first couple of rounds though.
A possibly-not-so-dark horse challenger in Justin Gaethje. Endless cardio, knockout power, horrible clinch and wholly unlikey to get discouraged by anything Khabib does.
Great stuff from Rose and Joanna. Rose just seemed to zombie her in that last round.

Yeah I'm inclined to agree. I think Tony Ferguson in particular will have been gutted to watch that. Iaquinta looked distinctly average and still managed to make Khabib look like a mere mortal with a low stance, feinting his own take-downs and managing to avoid Khabib's low singles. It's hard to know if Khabib was fully healthy but may still have been feeling the weight cut, he seemed incapable of adapting his game.
Calling out GSP might be as much about avoiding that weight cut as it is about avoiding waiting around for McGregor to sort his life out. GSP would maul him based on that fight.
I think McGregor would have beaten him handily on Saturday night's form. I think Gaethje is a bad matchup for Khabib but I don't see him beating Poirier (I guess we'll soon see) and I don't see Khabib sticking around at Lightweight.
Oh and Rose looked great. Definitely thought she won rounds 1,2 and 5 clearly. Joanna still in fantasy land. Too bad Rose didn't take her down and choke out to draw a line under it.
FIght of the night? Fight of the bloomin' decade more like. That was awesome!!!
Fell asleep during round 4 of the main bout (watched the rest ths morninng). Loved his comment on Conor preferring to fight a bus than him 😀 Bad day in the office for Khabib but still came out champ. Don't think Conor would have got up as easily as Al did and Khabib would deffo go to the ground more against McSlabber. I'm a big fan of Tony and think that's the real title fight. And would love to see T City have a go at either.
Rose was awesome. Love her calmness and humility. And her ability to make a world class striker miss almost every time 😀

Are you referring to Zabit Magomedsharipov vs Kyle Bochniak? That was a hell of a fight. Zabit broke his hand apparently. Someone get that guy some english lessons.

Hmmmm. Really not so sure about that. McGregor is at least a brown belt in jiujitsu as of a year ago and has been training extensively with Dillon Danis since then. The knock on him is always that he's no good on the ground and yet whenever he hit's the ground he's shown to be more than capable (when not half knocked out already). The idea that a UFC champ and blackbelt level BJJ player is crap on the ground is just nonsense. McGregor also measures distance brilliantly making him incredibly difficult to shoot on. He would handle Khabib's low singles easily. A blast double leg from someone like GSP, Woodley or similar might be a different question though.
Minor PSA for MMA fans - the UFC have 6 fights on Fightpass tonight from 8:30 and they have the usual month long Fightpass trial available. Bizarrely I was able to avail of it just by re-entering my payment details (already had an account and then cancelled).
The main card is fantastic, on paper at least.
Bellator 200 on 5Spike tonight. Pretty good card for free tv. Then UFC Liverpool on Sunday - big night for MMA in the UK.
More weight cut madness. Wholly unsurprised to see Till failing to make weight; the guy's stupidly big for a welterweight. I suppose he appears to have tried at least, as opposed to doing a MacKenzie Dern. However the on-day upper weight limit just seems ridiculously unsafe.

However the on-day upper weight limit just seems ridiculously unsafe.
I think California have a rule to that effect - A fighter must not weigh 10 or 12% more than their weigh in weight come fight night. Suffice to say, if you can't safely be at 188lbs, you shouldn't ever be 170. One FC have the right idea, or close to it.
Very nearly time for Till to weigh in again....wouldn't be surprised if there are further complications.
Holloway out again. Stipe vs DC is going to be awesome. Ngannou vs Lewis should be super fun also... Double K.O? ;-).
Ngannou vs Lewis should be super fun also
Well that didn't go to plan....
Yeah, abysmal
though not as abysmal as the DC - Lesnar cringefest afterwards...
Meh, I had no problem with it. A bit silly, a bit WWE, but whatever. Didn't detract from the night.
I am surprised we don't get more of it to be honest, WWE do own UFC.
DC with a couple of naughty eye pokes. Card missed the Ortega vs Holloway match up especially with DL Vs FN being so shite.
One of the most disappointing fight cards ever imo...
The Lesnar/DC thingy afterwards just about summed it up. Terrible.
Too early to start talking about McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov?
Have I guaranteed that Khabib will decapitate himself in training just by mentioning it?
As a lot of commentators seem to be suggesting, this one seems very binary to me: either McGregor gets an early KO/TKO, or Khabib gets his hands on him and turns the fight into a horror film.
I wonder about the possibility of McGregor surviving being taken down in rounds one and two, then having an opportunity to get back into the fight in the later rounds. Iaquinta sort of managed this, as he largely avoided being taken down in rounds three and four. However, he still lost those rounds on the feet. Could McGregor still be in position to win those rounds if he gets Khabibed in rounds one and two?
Lots to ponder.
UFC 235 3AM time UK time. Stay up or watch tomorrow ?
Woodley Vs Usman (Woodley wins)
Zabit Vs someone (love his skills, zabit wins)
Askren roman soldier looking dude fighting Lawler. (Askren wins ground and pound )
Three good fights right there !
Awesome card tonight.
If Usman can get out of the first couple of rounds, Woodley might be in trouble. Usman's pace is terrifying, he's at least as strong as Woodley and can compete with his wrestling. Usman WILL get hit early though.
I favour Zabit over Stephens, provided he remembers to wrestle.
Looking forward to Garbrant vs Munhoz too: tough comeback for Garbrant.
