The top 3, in order, are Germany, Canada, and the UK. I am proud to have a close connection to all of them, and to be a citizen of two.

Surely the top 3 are Russia, Greenland and Canada?

1 out of 3 isn't too bad, scotroutes. But you forgot 'Deutschland über Alles'.

I would have said Peru, Bhutan and Nepal, but it depends on your idea of 'top'.

The UK isn't a country.

The UK isn't a country.

They're talking about England- just trying to be PC about it.

I'd say their definition is pretty much spot on

the United Kingdom includes the island of Great Britain – which contains England, Scotland and Wales – and the northern portion of the island of Ireland.

Some of their rankings are bizarre:
UK Cultural Influence at no5, and "open for business" at 18?

.... but

isn't that wrong?

Great Britain is the main geographical and not political land mass and NI isn't included in that

The British Isles include all islands

And doesn't the UK include the Crown dependencies and stuff?

The Uk's main failing is being over burdened with pedants and pedantry...

"US news"

China above Ireland in the list tells me that their criteria don't correspond to my own. They clearly don't consider the number of working poor or pollution in their ranking.

They do, but they also include other things like power and influence and clearly China will beat Ireland on that one every time. You can break down how they got to their results, so you'll probably find Ireland do come above China on the things that you mention.

I couldn't be bothered to trawl through the criteria but the answer is wrong. No 1 is Norway. Even Swedes think it's cool.

I'm in Sweden, I asked some Swedes, they said Norway. I mean look at it. They just took the best bit of that lump of land

By what grade is the UK a 'top' country- minor international political influence, relatively small population, unwelcoming to foreigners, difficult to get into (if you aren't from Europe) and rainy?

Don't let your negativity get in the way of the facts, top table at the UN and in the top 10 most visited countries. A bit rainy yes, but London where most people visit and live isn't that rainy, with on average less days of rain than Miami, Rio, New York and Sydney to name a few.

minor international political influence

Hmm. English the world's lingua franca, huge historical influence, third biggest in EU, 9th biggest world economy, UN permanent security council member. Don't call that minor. Finland is minor.

relatively small population

It's not that small. 3rd biggest in Western Europe (5th if you include Turkey and Russia). Sweden 10m, Finland 5m

unwelcoming to foreigners

It's not. Most foreigners love how cosmopolitan it really is. There's just a vocal minority of miserable gits, which is a lot smaller than most countries.

difficult to get into (if you aren't from Europe)

Hmm - again, lots of countries are difficult to get into, I don't think the UK is an exception. Of course it's full of foreigners, so it can't be that hard.

rainy

Yes, but it's not extremely not, not extremely cold, and the rain is what makes it green and fertile, which had big benefits historically. Did you know in lots of countries cycling is a summer only activity, because it's so icy and cold in the winter?

You need to live some where with no clean running water for a bit

Or where you have zero chance of a job

Or you pay a bribe to pass your driving test

Or has no state health care

Or all of these

I think it's quit telling how much lower our per head GDP is than the other top countries, even lower than France which is supposedly in economic termol.

P.s. good troll by munrobiker

Or all of these

Not a warzone or likely to become one soon

Stable government

Can breathe the air in the cities

Free schooling

Welfare system

No big natural disasters (earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, tornados, fires).

No really dangerous animals

No severe weather

The more I travel the luckier I feel about where I was born!

+1 to what molgrips said (apart from the rain bit which really is shit). Most people who moan about this country (the UK) have no idea how good we gave it.

I usually hate these lists but it looks like some effort has gone in to making it balanced. If you dig deeper each category has sub categories.
If you could weight it category according to what's important get to you to get new overall scores that would be useful.

It's all a bit of fun though really.

I imagine for much of its history living in Norway really sucked ass. Cold, wet, cold, limited decent arable land, cold, often dark, and cold. I mean I quite like cold, from the inside a down jacket and snow boots. Not soaked to the skin stinking of fish. And cold.

How much do you like fish. And being wet, and cold.

Pretty sorted at the moment admittedly, can't wait to get back tbh.
