Does the lad not know that blowing out attracts them even more ..its only the female of the species that bites too!

I've often thought that a fitting punishment for someone who has done you wrong would be to strip them naked on a warm but moist still night right in the middle of Kielder ( or any other ) Forest of your choice and leave them there ..

Did you know the Highland Clearances are to blame for so many midge in Scotland?

When they cleared the people and put Cheviot Sheep on the land, they ate everything. So any bushes and hedges disappeared, and with it the habitat for birds, which are their predators. Hence fewer birds, more midge.

So, to summarise, the midges are caused by the English? 😁

The Clearances were mainly carried out by/on behalf of Scots landowners. What have the English got to do with It?

Everything is ultimately the English's fault in Scotland.

Highland clearances, not qualifying for the World Cup, Edinburgh Trams, the SNP, EVERYTHING.

It's a similar story with the flies in the Aussie outback, and the need for hilarious dangly-corked hats. Europeans introduced lots of large mammals (cows and sheep) to a grassland ecosystem that wasn't evolved for them; other similar places, like the African savannah, have things like dung beetles to cope with the large amounts of poop. Not so in Australia, the only thing that thrives on poo there is flies.

Not sure it would make any difference to places like the East Side of Loch Lomond where there was never really any crofting?

How did those large estates come to be?

Many lands were "gifted" for services to the monarch - killing off a bastard son, eliminating an enemy, that sort of thing. Undoubtedly, some of those would have been gifted during the time of English rule but it's a stretch to start apportioning blame for how landowners later treated their kin, neighbours and clansmen.

It’s a similar story with the flies in the Aussie outback

I've no idea if it's true or not, but I was once told that the Australian accent is a product of convict cockney and keeping your teeth together to keep the flies out.
