........so many memories
..... go on then, share some 😀
The new years eve special was always something me and my friends always looked forward to.
Colour me pop hosted by richard williams then evolved into the whistle test.
Stand outs for me - rory gallagher (my number 1 musical hero), ry cooder playing vigilante man, captain beefheart, roxy music when whispering bob made it clear he didn't like them, bob marley, the tubes....so many more.
The theme music - stone fox chase - and stone kicker graphics.
Let me reminisce.....
Colin Blunstone ( and heavy friends) playing Say You Don't Mind.
Druid
Budgie
Amazing early CGI graphics to things like Floyd's 'Careful with that Axe...'
The video for Accidents Will Happen.
Chatting to Bob in the pub to talk music and get clues about the next programme.
Fantastic show
Gabba Gabba Hey
Those were the days. 8)
The most stoned people I've ever seen on TV.
When it lost the "Old Grey"... I recorded the PiL set onto a cassette with the recorder sat in front of the telly. "SSSHHH!"
This blew me away and when I found it on Youtube I actually dun a comment. A comment on Youtube! I musta been excited.
youse dudes is old! 😆
If you haven't seen this before you are in for a real treat, Elkie Brooks at her best!
I loved Vinegar Joe.
Own trumpet content...
ZZ Top, Cheap Sunglasses. TOGWT was one of the few reasons to justify going into the uni bar.
Am I the only one who remembers wading through a whole load of sh1t just to get maybe two or three tracks per series that were good? A bit like Jools now...
I first saw U2 on TOGWT, doing I Will Follow & The Electric Co, 1980 IIRC. They would have been about 18 at the time & I was very impressed. Not so impressed by them nowadays though
I recall that City of Tiny Lights made a big impression on a stoned teenager
Woppit wins. He was bloody on it
And is now an angry man on a bicycle website, don't play drums kids this is what happens 😆
😆 2 videos on he's playing topless in Spain...
Wow indeed MrW! I liked that track, just been reading your interview and so sad that Adrian didn't get the help he desperately needed.
And you've played at The Marquee. 8)
What an interesting life you've undoubtedly had. 😀
It seemed to make some sense at the time.
Now, it's all you bastards. (Term of affection). 😉
Ooh and not forgetting King Crimson featuring the brilliant Adrian Belew
@rustyspanner - Little Feat are one of my favourite bands. Frank Zappa kicked Lowell George out of The Mothers of Invention for being weird!
Saw them at Manchester Free Trade Hall in the late 1970s - actually the tour they recorded for Waiting for Columbus. Then saw them a few years ago at the Picturedrome in Holmfirth - the set was delayed as one of the audience went into labour 😛
Anyway, another TOGWT video:
Loved Wishbone Ash, had seen them a few times probably 74/75.
Tina is ace!
Respect Mr Woppit, respect.
🙂
Whitestone, I am very jealous indeed, too young to have seen them with LG, don't really want to see them without him.
😐
Sorry for posting this AGAIN, but how bloody good is this?
Graham Parker
Dire Straights from 1978
Brinsley Schwarz
Lindisfarn
Always loved this, first guitar 'solo' I actually liked...
And... death to timid pop...
Oooo, and this. Marvellous.
Another great under-rated band.
Some great vids and memories. 😀
How's this for a line-up:
Sensational Alex Harvey Band
Tim Buckley
John McLaughlin & the Mahavishnu Orchestra
Doobie Brothers
Van Morrison
Allman Brothers closed with a very long set.
8)
Freebird winning the NYE phone in pole.
And pretty much everything already mentioned PLUS
The New York Dolls,
Two pages in & no-one's mentioned Skynryd's set 😯
I didn't watch OGWT at the time but I've seen plenty of repeat episodes over the years & highlights so far are the above mentioned Skynryd set which resides on the HDR & gets played a couple of times a year,ZZ Top, & Talking Heads.I've not seen the Ramones episode..
Episodes seem to turn up on BBC4 occasionally.
I get the comparison to 'Later',there's a lot of stuff on there that I wouldn't listen to again.
The New York Dolls
Yes that was one of the best I've seen
"Cough"
I remember watching ogwt as a youth - When The Cult were on with their "new" metal sound was a particular highlight.
Fair play Mr Woppit. Nice. 🙂
Well the New Yorkk Dolls were, erm, interesting the first time, but quickly became dull. Patti Smith's Horses is a bit meh and Freebird is just sh***.
All IMHO of course.
Some great finds there singlepeeps! that King Crimson is tiptop.
My first Whistle Test memory is John Martyn doing this. It blew my 8 year old mind.
I get the fact that most of the stuff on there may not be to your taste but, again like Jools there's generally something you wouldn't otherwise get to hear that makes it worth it .Its a great shame there are so few outlets for live music good bad or indifferent .
Oh yes, yes and yes again to John Martyn. Master of the echo loop.
TOGWT, the John Peel Show and Later with JH were/are all very eclectic and not fixated on one type of music, their presenters having a love of music rather than a style and not interested in trotting out record industry marketing spiel.
Saw John Martyn live a couple of times - really good. Sea Sick Steve is similar.

@rustyspanner - Little Feat are one of my favourite bands. Frank Zappa kicked Lowell George out of The Mothers of Invention for being weird!
lived in Leeds in early 80's and used to go to a 2nd hand record shop every few weeks in the Merrion Centre market - one day asked the guy behind the counter what was it they were playing - it was Little Feat, after the track finished he took the record off the turntable and gave it to me
John Martyn you say.....
Just to maintain the John Martyn appreciation here he is still echoing on Later.

PSA: BBC4 now 😉
PSA: BBC4 nowPOSTED 13 MINUTES AGO # REPO
ta
Who was playing?
ooooh what we had so far.....
new york dolls, bowie, couple of dr feelgood songs, roxy music, bob marley, cher and gregg allman, tom petty, patti smith, steppenwolf, plenty more.......lots of long hair 🙂
The 70's Gold compilation.
*swoon* debbie harry 😳
John Martyn was immensely more talented than Seasick Sid.
still is.
The feelgoods and debbie harry - aaaaah!
Great that wilko johnson & deborah are still out there and doing well.
Saw the original feelgoods waaay back; wilko with norman watt-roy in more recent times and his 'final farewell tour' when he had an, apparently, inoperable tumour was great and emotional but then the old bugger cheated death.
Deborah Harry with the jazz messengers - they started with some noodling and improv then.....from stage left, a small blond haired woman wandered onto stage, sat on a stool, said nothing until she was introduced.
After that it was her show.
As to Nipper - nothing much wrong with 70's gold; some of it is embarassing now but much is still great. McAvoy Boogie by rory gallagher - c1972?
If you like the theme - stone fox chase - check out Mark Feltham's version (you know, the harmonica bloke from nine below zero)........
Liking the John Martyn love. Big regret I never saw him live.
A bit of rory's excellence c1971.........
John Martyn love - yes.
Busby Berkeley film clips synched to Led Zeppelin and others - fantastic!
Floyd, One of Those Days.
Liking the John Martyn love. Big regret I never saw him live.
I did, a number of times. He could be patchy, though: once he was so drunk on stage he could barely perform, it was rather embarrassing. When he was on form, though, he was mesmerising.
There's a case to be made for a dedicated TOGWT channel, just playing continually everything that's still available.
I don't see a link to any of the videos with woppit on, and not knowing who it was he played with, I've got no idea where to look.
Little Feat are one of my favourite bands. Frank Zappa kicked Lowell George out of The Mothers of Invention for being weird!
No. Lowell was into drugs, Zappa hated drugs and kicked him out eventually.
Not OGWT but Rory Gallagher
Ooh and not forgetting King Crimson featuring the brilliant Adrian Belew
And the equally brilliant, and almost impossibly cool Tony Levin, the only man to really show how to play the Chapman Stick.
I have a sneaking suspicion that might have been recorded in my home town, at a venue that sadly no longer exists; for whatever reason, I didn't get a ticket to see them. I also missed seeing The Smiths there, and The Waterboys.
I could kick myself!
Tina is ace!
The whole band were, but I know what you mean, she's so intense!
I saw them on the '77 tour, with Dire Straits supporting! Played Swindon Oasis.
Great to see that SAHB performance, Zal and Chris doing their tippy-toe thing behind Alex has always stuck in my mind, so funny!
Another gem.
Specials from 1979.
Also 1979.
I remember this scaring the hell out of me when I was a kid! 🙂
Not the best quality but a snippet of one of the most underrated bands ever.
Neither Big Country or The Armoury Show realised the potential that The Skids were promising.
The Absolute Game is one of those albums that has never been far away from turntable since it's release.
Always had a soft spot for this'un
@shermer - the wonderful captain beefheart
