You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
(* - totally and wholly unofficial)
On the back of various covid / mental health threads, I've wanted to do 'something' with STW for a while now. So tonight I've knocked heads with @nbt and @bunnyhop and between us we're going to do something.
The plan is for us to do a [Zoom / some other tech] video call and for nbt to host a 'pub quiz' style online quiz. After that we'll hang out and talk bollocks until the last man standing - likely me - falls over.
The inaugural run will very much be proof-of-concept to see if it works, with a view to expanding the idea out with more stuff if it proves to have legs (and doesn't turn out to be a total car-crash). I have a bunch of ideas for other things to do if this proves successful.
Attendee slots will be hard-limited because of a) technological restrictions with free software and b) we don't want to look like abject gobbins in front of half the userbase. Exactly how we're going to enforce that (first-come or registration signups?) is a point of discussion TBC.
We're looking at the evening of the 17th of this month, which by happenstance is St Patrick's day. This date isn't up for debate because screw you and arrange your own party. (-: Moreover, if we put this to a vote then it'd likely happen some time in 2023 so this is a stick in the sand, the decision has been made.
So the purpose of this post is threefold: Firstly, if you're interested, stick a note in your diary. Secondly, if you're interested, it'd be really helpful to us right now if you posted so that we can get a vague approximation of numbers. Thirdly, well... discuss.
What time did you guys have in mind for the start?
Looking to assembling at 7:30 with a view to starting the quiz at 8. I'm told that it's a 40 minute quiz so allowing for cocking about it should be well dusted by 9pm.
Again though, this is in its infancy and we're ironing out details, this is currently all a broad brush.
As I'd love to see jules and Jane, I'm in.
I'm up for that
Why not? I love a quiz.
And I (knowingly) know hardly anyone off here in real life so will be nice to put some faces to names
Be careful what you wish for.
Aye, I’m game.
I'm up for this
im also up for it......
I'm interested. Should be a good laugh.
(We've been quizzing with some brainiacs to warm up, so may be in with a chance of mid-table mediocrity).
Up for it as well. Although the last online pub style quiz thing I was in that Jules hosted, he did put the wrong answers up on screen a couple of times.
Must be his advancing years. 😉
Yep, I'd be interested. Love a quiz.
I’d give it a go.
remember the CORRECT answer isn't what you know to be true as you were actually there and watched it happen, the CORRECT answer is what the quizmaster has written down on the answer sheet. Crazy-legs raises a good point though, I can't run that quiz again 😉
Thinking about it, I might make a special effort for this one and write a new round for St Patricks Day.
1) how many pints of guiness can your quizmaster drink during the quiz and remiain coherent"
2) How would you be travelling if you arrived at Shannon from abroad?
3) wht have they got an airport called sharon anyway? Why not amanda or victoria
4) it's nice and tasty this guiness isn't it
5) who fancies another one
6) why has the room rotated so the light fitting is now sticking out of the wall?
1) I fear that ship has already sailed.
Just a thought; £5 donation to STW entry fee?
Let's see how the test event goes, it might sink like a stone. If you enjoy it (and I really hope you do and think you will) then there's nothing to stop you donating to STW (or the charity of your choice / the quizmaster's suggestion).
Waves to Pook and crazylegs.
I'm in, but please be aware when it comes to quizzes I'm the most competitive woman on the planet.
Oh dear I'll have to cut nbt's hair (what's left of it).
Yeah, we discussed this (entry fee, not nbt's hair). We both felt that it'd be preferable to suggest a charitable donation rather than any sort of mandatory fee which might be a barrier to entry. And of course, free members might like to consider this another value-added from the site and a 12-month digital subscription isn't very expensive...
In any case, in my head at least this first outing is very much a beta test. Things will go wrong. I'm expecting it to either be massively under-subscribed or massively over-subscribed. (-: So adding money into the mix just sets unrealistic expectations and adds pressure.
Yeah, go on, I'm in, assuming we have working broadband by then.
when it comes to quizzes I’m the most competitive woman on the planet.
Having seen Bunnyhop at a very actual pub quiz, never mind a very virtual one, I can confirm this to be the case.
So adding money into the mix just sets unrealistic expectations and adds pressure.
Cool.
If I get a place, I'll donate. And buy the organisers a pint. And that's not bribery!
Nettles - when you live that far out in the sticks you can't assume anything (wink).
Who are you going with? I know when No_discerning_taste lived over in Mellor she found 4g broadband to be more reliable and much faster than landline
The landline broadband is coming from Shell, we're expecting about 7mb. 4G may well be an option, we'll see how good/bad the landline stuff is first.
If you're in their catchment area, I can highly recommend https://b4rn.org.uk/postcode-checker/ (full disclosure: one of the founders is a friend of mine).
Oh yes.....
Sounds fun. 🙂
Cheers Cougar, not in their patch (but there are similar companies around us if needs be)
I spoke to the overlords, and they agree don't be giving STW any donations for this! Have some fun, share the love with bunnyhop, nbt and Cougar or whoever they like to support. If you do want a thing that's already set up in the name of STW to track how lovely you all are there's the World Bicycle Relief pot: https://worldbicyclereliefuk.enthuse.com/cf/singletrack-supporting-world-bicycle-relief
I'll join please Duncan Callum organised an MNPR one a few weeks ago* and I really enjoyed it and drunk too much dirty beer.
*I was robbed of the win. I won't bore you with the details but I was robbed of the win. Did I mention I was robbed of the win. I'm not bitter obvs.
tthew - you sound as competitive as I am :0)
Hannah - would it be ok to give some funds to mountain rescue (many on here are members)?
Oh. Yeah, thanks Hannah, it didn't even enter my head to enquire as to what STW might prefer. Idiot boy.
Stock my name in the hat too.
I don't know anything, or rather I do know everything but some of what I know may differ from your reality.
I once won a pub quiz while working away from home. The purpose was a big joint of beef which didn't please the b&b lady when she found it in the sink in the morning until I told her it was a present to her. I got treated to a today dinner with the family that night.
We once won the pub quiz in the Coylumbridge Hilton. THe prize was the £1 per head entry fees - we got about £60. Paid for all the drinks that night and a lovely meal at the Dalrachney Lodge the following evening. Was a bit dodgy driving back to our caravan at the campsite in Aviemore as it had started snowing while we were in thw quiz and had put down about 3" of snow. I'm glad Mrs NBT doesn't drink and is a good driver as I had had a ferw social beverages...
Oh. Yeah, thanks Hannah, it didn’t even enter my head to enquire as to what STW might prefer. Idiot boy.
Nah, you didn't need to ask, I just spotted someone suggesting donations to us and figured I'd divert that good feeling to another cause.
Hannah – would it be ok to give some funds to mountain rescue (many on here are members)?
@bunnyhop you can choose whoever you like! - though I might have words if it was a Piers Mortimer Statue funder 🙂
The brainiacs quiz has been raising money for Trussell trust (over £12k since lockdown 2 on a fortnightly basis). Fair Share or a bike charity as Hannah suggested would also be good.
I love a pub quiz. I'd like to join!
Just bumping this up for those who may not have seen it yet
Are you live streaming this?
I want to watch when Cougar has his Jackie Weaver moment.
I'd be interested but i am both very competitive and rubbish at quizes so the tantrum risk quotient is high 😉
TJ - that's my predicament too.
Perchy - yes I too am looking forward to the Jackie Weaver moment. Do you think he'll wear the blond wig and we'll all flounce.
Are you live streaming this?
well it'll be hosted online so you're welcome to join in 😀
I’d be interested but i am both very competitive and rubbish at quizes so the tantrum risk quotient is high
Heh. Tantrum Jeremy.
Friday afternoon bump. I suppose I'd better get a quiz ready, or at least choose a quiz I've already got and add a "St Patrick's day" round 😀
Dude, spoilers!
I always statr with a list of the rounds. The round title may have very little to do with the content of the questions
for instance the quiz I'm running at 4pm for my colleagues has these rounds
Killer or Coder (10 questions)
Quiz Link (6 questions)
In Sequence (6 questions)
Famous Queens (6 questions)
The music round(10 questions)
Tech True Or False (6 questions)
Quiz Chain (6 questions)
Where is Kazakhstan? (6 questions)
General Knowledge (10 questions)
Alrighty. This is happening on Wednesday.
Your hosts are:
@NBT: Quizmaster.
@RogerMoore: Zoom-master.
@Cougar: Uh, I've lost track, incumbent gobshite? Maitre'D mebbe.
The quiz will be played via myquiz.org so you might want to have two separate devices for the chat and the quiz, and check that you can load the site ahead of time. You can sign up via various methods but you don't need to and can just play by entering the game code on the front page.
The running order is thus:
We will post a Zoom link for the chat channel on the forum at 7:30pm. Oh yeah, go install Zoom too and test that it works. Choice of video / audio / text / lurking is up to you, no kink chat shaming.
The game code for the quiz will be dropped into the Zoom group at 7:40.
The same code will be posted on the forum at 7:55. So, active participants get first dibs on slots, after that it's open season.
Quiz starts at 8:00. After that you'll have missed earlier questions and won't score for those but you can still join later.
There is a hard limit of 50 on the quiz. If we hit that I will be absolutely astounded (from the comments here I'm hoping for half that) but should that happen and you're blocked out you can still join the chat thanks to RM's generously loaned paid-for Zoom account.
Everyone is welcome on the chat at any time, but I'd ask that if you don't get a quiz slot then shut the hell up please don't be disruptive until it's finished. If it does turn messy then we might have to mute everyone, so if that happens then don't take it personally as we'll likely do it across the board.
The quiz will run for an amount of time, finger in the air maybe an hour, NBT reckons half that but I think he's being optimistic. After that we'll hang out and talk the toot until everyone falls over.
Disclaimer as I said at the start, in my head this is very much a proof of concept. If it crashes and burns then at least we tried, if it works then I / we / others might try and do it again. But that's a conversation for afterwards.
Swatting up on Disney film as I type! 😉
RM.
Swotting.
Christ, are we actually doing this?
#SuddenCatastrophicConfidenceFailure
There is a hard limit of 50 on the quiz.
Will be quite the zoom call if loads of people turn up. 🙂

You say that - this is one of the quizzes I've previously run (so can't run again, there are participants in the STW quiz who've seen it)

Ok, final prep is finished and the quiz is ready. It comprises 12 rounds of 5 multiple choice questions each. The rounds are:
- St Patricks Day
- Geography
- Travel
- Art
- Mythbusters
- History
- Literature
- Landmarks
- Food
- Board Games
- Film
- General Knowledge
I can give you a heads-up that this quiz will be hosted on the online platform https://myquiz.org/ . Future quizzes may also use this as it's a handy platform - while you can play without needing to register, it's free to create an account and I've had no spam or anything from them in the months I've been using it.
Once the quiz starts, it will run automatically. You will have 18 seconds to read and answer the question, then 12 seconds to understand why you got it wrong and what the right answer was 😀
This means that the quiz will take 30 minutes to run (18+12 = 30 seconds, * 60 questions = 30 minutes). Scores are kept automatically and you can see the leaderboard to see how you're doing. As @cougar says you don't have to join the zoom call to participate in the quiz (or you can join and lurk with no camera / mike) but those on the zoom call will get an early heads up on the access code for the quiz.
You may wish to bring a sociable beverage. Personally, I will be supporting the fine local business Howard Town Brewery of Glossop
See you this time tomorrow, folks!
Is it too late to register interest? Meant to post last week.
Not at all. I mean, not that it'll make any difference at this point. See my post a few up.
We're going to post the Zoom link tomorrow, then post the quiz link in Zoom, them post the quiz link in public. If you want to participate in the quiz then you just need to be one of the first fifty to enter the app (and I'll be both astonished and deliriously happy if we get half that).
If you want to just talk bollocks on Zoom post-quiz then we no longer have a hard limit here thanks to RM, so folk can drop in and out of that as they please. Or you can drop in during, even.
Afternoon bump, zoom link and quiz link will be posted up later.
Quick recap so you don't have to trawl through the thread:
zoom link goes up 19.30 (ish). You don't have to have your camera / mike on if you just want to lurk, but that's part of the joy
quiz link will go up in zoom chat about 19.40, so zoomers can get themselves set up. There's a hard limit of 50 on the quiz itself but it's unlikely we'll get that many
quiz link will be posted here in the forum about 19.55
qiuz will start at 8pm and once running will last half an hour
after that you can stay as long as you like and we cam all drink beer and talk bollocks.
It's all free to enter and use, just turn up and enjoy.
quiz link will be posted here in the forum about 19.55
I know it's splitting hairs but shall we say 7:50? Then it's a 'thing' every ten minutes and makes my CDO happy.
Shortly before the start I'll create a new thread and request this one be closed, then the connection details etc are in the OP rather than lost between preamble and, uh, postamble.
Good call, on both counts
Ah damn, I'm double booked tonight. Hope I may be able to join the post quiz bantz. I'm sure you'll miss me. 😁
That's a shame @tthew.
for those who are turning up, what's the dress code? Are we going full black tie or just evening suit?
or is it "I've still got half my breakfast down the front of my onesie, I'll just turn the camera off"?
😀 😉
Riding kit. Show off your helmet.
"Clothed" would be preferred.
Oh,
As above, I'm going to start a new thread with connection details, ideally around 7:20 but I'm extremely time-poor so it might not be on the nose. So if you're monitoring this thread for updates, you'll miss it.
or is it “I’ve still got half my breakfast down the front of my onesie, I’ll just turn the camera off”?
I'm about to have the fastest shower in the world as I currently look like Frank out of Shameless.
