@cougar, That was quite spectacular! I don't think that should be allowed to pass without comment. This line was my favourite.

And because the ****ers that are taking the piss, they’re no strangers to a pork pie themselves and they’ll think nothing of cosplaying as their favourite footballer in the pub on a Saturday night.

And well said too. 👍

Hear hear!

And @Kelvin, this actually is very helpful. As they're all still on iPlayer at the moment I think, I'll check them out. Any chance you can recall a similar list for the Capaldi era please?

Do you have some examples of the good episodes I don’t hear you ask…

It Takes You Away (relies on a lot earlier family stuff, so don’t watch in isolation)

Demons of the Punjab (yes, that’s your history that is, told with heart)

The Haunting of Villa Diodati (if you can time travel, and have the BBC’s resources, make period drama)

The Husbands of River Song... and then most of series 10. I don't think there's any to skip, and even the weaker ones contribute something to the storylines of the better ones. Don't bother with series 8 & 9 if you're not a hardened fan (in my opinion).

Shame Michelle Gomez has played a baddie as I think she would have made a great Doctor as she can be funny, charming, and pure evil and seems to have a natural quirkiness about her.

Totally. Ostensibly they're two halves of the same character.

That was quite spectacular!

In honesty, I was expecting a kicking for that.

Really? The “cosplaying as their favourite footballer in the pub on a Saturday night” line will be stolen and reused by many I suspect… a cold stone classic.

Aw. Gosh. Well, thank you. It was late, I was tired, I was furious, and as I hit Submit I thought "I'll likely regret that in the morning."

I can tell you the moment which I think seeded it, I remember the tipping point for yesterday's little tirade. Chic Festivals host such events as the Sci-Fi Weekender and Hard Rock Hell. One year they made the misstep of hosting both on the same site at the same time. Buy a ticket for one, get access to the other.

I'm very firmly in the centre of this particular Venn Diagram and on paper it was heaven for me personally. What happened in reality was The Fly, they collided two groups of people who weren't all that used to being collided. SFW wound up being infiltrated by denim-clad nebs who were variously perving over scantily clad ladies whilst ruthlessly pointing and laughing at scantily clad ladies who weren't near-anorexic. It turned into a "let's all laugh at the weirdos" fest and it was a car crash.

Denim-clad nebs, they're also my people, but they had no business at SFW that day. And to my eternal chagrin I should've told them so and didn't. And I've been boiling about that ever since, two groups of people I love hating on each other and I did nothing.

So, yeah. If you're here solely to have a pop then grow the hell up and get the **** out of my nerdery.

Or, "a" moment anyway.

Whittaker wasn’t cast because she was female. She was cast despite being female, because the casting crew thought she was the best actor for the job.

That's not my understanding of the order. My impression was that the decision was to have a female Doctor, partly due to the pressure for lack of a better word, from the fandom, that it was time.
Which put a lot of pressure in the writing. They completely failed to take advantage, which has exacerbated the deficiency.
The best kids shows had a bit of education but it was so subtle that you didn't even notice it. It also had stuff in there for the adults only.

The Rosa Parks epsidoe would have been really good if they'd gone back another year and started with Claudette Colvin and explained why we know about Parks but not her.

Well, I did not see that one coming.

RTD is returning as showrunner.

Will the first scene be in a shower?

I think you're confusing it with Enterprise.

Hell yes!

I was treating the Olly Alexander rumours as nonsense, but I can see him bringing him onboard.

I hadn't made that connection but yes, he's surely a shoe-in now.

This thread was worth resurrecting if only to read Cougar's tirade on the previous page and, in particular, the cosplaying footballer reference.

Brilliant 🙂

This thread was worth resurrecting if only to read Cougar’s tirade on the previous page and, in particular, the cosplaying footballer reference.

But for the love of Skywalker, if there’s a discussion going on that you have no interest in, just scroll on by. You don’t need to be here, you don’t need to be a part of it. You don’t need to be sitting there taking the piss. Other threads are available. Other forums are available. Other hobbies are available.

Go read / do something you like. Let everyone else enjoy their things.

Absobloodylutly! I’d sort of skipped over this thread, then I noticed it had popped back onto the first page, sort of read a bit of page three and thought, hang on, have I missed something?
Did I ever! Thank you Cougar, that was a spectacular, heart-felt rant, and I applaud every word, I’ve felt that way for probably longer than you have, but never been able to express my feelings, now you’ve done it in a truly exemplary fashion.
Thank you, and bless you!

Quite liked Dr Who on a Saturday evening but the recent series with Jodie and Bradley have been poor imo; I don’t bother watching anymore.

Unless they change something I can’t see it lasting much longer.

Would watching the Sylvester McCoy episodes make the recent ones better?

Thank you Cougar, that was a spectacular, heart-felt rant,

Sorry. I was a bit vexed, I've been carrying this for a while. I've been on the receiving end for a long time and it clipped a nerve.

Point is, it's OK to like things. You might like Doctor Who, or football, or trains, or coins, or Rick & Morty, or cooking, or space travel, or camping, or WWII, or Portugal. But ragging on someone else's nerdery because it's different from your nerdery isn't cool.

Aged 13 I took the beatings (when they could catch me), aged 49 and armed with a keyboard and a hot sweaty Internet connection they're gonna have a fight on their hands. I can finally rage impotently against injustice without fear of getting stuffed in a bin and hoofed down the hill.

Also,

If you've attended two football matches a week for the last 25 years,

You're a ****ing nerd, just in a different discipline. Sorry.

Mate of mine recently got his name etched on a plaque under his season ticket seat at Old Trafford. Which is brilliant, I'm stoked for him, that must be an amazing thing. But he immediately waives any right to give me shit for watching Star Trek reruns.

Unless you’re just watching that Enterprise shower scene over and over… you deserve a bit of joshing then.
