I think a more pertinent question is which direction will the writing go in, it's become distinctly meh recently. I rather felt that Whittakers entrance as a female doctor was seriously undermined by the scripts (and her goofy acting).

Jodie Whittaker was compromised by not-so-great scripts. All of the “fam” stuff etc. But hey, it is a kid’s programme and I am 52.

To answer the question, the thing probably needs a break, or a significant shift in direction and, well, funding. Compared to output from Netflix, Disney etc, it looks pretty low-rent.

Alot of old doctor who were filmed in Gllyn Rhonwy quarry on the West Bank of Llyn Padarn. I know this because i have worked on a proposal to flood it.

Hope you're right. Either way I think the writers of the last series after giving the job to Jody sat back and said "A Wimmin! look, a wimminz, everybody look at what we've done..." and then used that as an excuse/forgot how to write a decent show...I couldn't give a toss (I think I might have said) who the next Dr is as long as it's well written and not pulled out of some-ones arse at the last minute. (which it felt like at times last season)

I think you're misunderstanding the culture war. The faux outrage won't be because the new Doctor is an actor of colour, it'll be because the BBC chose them because they are an actor of colour, which serves as another excuse to beat the BBC for being all snowflakey and woke.
Writing has been poor since Matt Smith left, and the only episode I remember enjoying from Peter Capaldi being the Dr was the one with two masters- Michelle Gomez and John Simm.
Shame as I thought it was a great piece of casting, similarly I think Jodie Whittaker has been hamstrung by poor scripts and hasn't had the story lines Matt or David Tennant or even Christopher Eccleston had the opportunity to enjoy.
Jo Martin would be a simple choice.

Bookies' favourite is Olly Someoneorother who's as camp as a fire sale in Go Outdoors. I can't see it myself because he's a bit too young, but it'd almost be worth it just to watch the bottom half of the Internet explode when he winks at Captain Jack and tells him it's bigger on the inside. Given previous track records of both betting odds and the rumour mill, the answer to "who will it be?" is likely Olly.
A close second are Richard Ayoade and Kris Marshall. I'd be happy with either of those, but speaking as a closet Death In Paradise fan I think Kris would be brilliant.
Jo Martin? I dunno... I wasn't convinced, but she had like 15 minutes of screen time and it usually takes a full series for a new Doctor (and their writers) to find their feet properly so, could work?
To my mind the perfect Doctor needs three things. An air of other-worldly alien-ness; a sense of silliness and fun; and the ability to turn on the gravitas and darkness when needed. The latter is where Matt Smith fell down for me, he absolutely nailed the quirky and eccentric but when he was in scenes like shouting down the universe in the Pandorica arc he had all the presence menace of a cheese sandwich. And I'm rather suspicious that both Olly and Richard would suffer similarly, I can't quite see Moss from the IT Crowd walking into a room and the room going "ah, he's in charge."

As to "who do I want?" that's a tougher question. I can't see a way of working it unless it's a spin-off show, but who I'd really like to see given more screen time is Paul McGann. He's absolutely killing it in the Big Finish audio dramas and his "Night of the Doctor" short was the greatest mic drop since the show restarted in 2005.

Yes! I've never watched Death in Paradise but I genuinely thought he was brilliant in My Family. He would be a great doctor and actually has the comedic chops to make some of the cringey writing that Jodie has been stuck with work.

I’ve never watched Death in Paradise
It's a guilty pleasure. It's basically the same show every week and in Doctor Who fashion they're now on their fourth incarnation (regeneration?) of broadly the same lead character. The first actor whose name I can't remember was great, Kris was superb, after that we had Ardle O'Hanlon which didn't really work for me and Ralf Little who does what he can with the role but the character he's been given is just bloody irritating.
It's worth a punt if only for the first two Doc- uh, detectives' run. It's basically Columbo set on a tropical island.

I think Capaldi nailed it, he could be all three, sometimes almost at the same time, but he could suddenly look like someone you wouldn’t want to turn your back on, in case you ended up with something sharp stuck out of it.
A trait he shared with the first Doctor.
You Kris Marshall fans should try and find a short series he did called My Life In Film. It was superb.
So I would add in, as the doctor has to have edge, Eccleston and tenner exuded the danger and sometimes cruelty of the doctor, so

It was. That was how the Hartnell era was pitched to the Beeb and is in no small part why it was actually commissioned. Fifty years ago. The educational notion went out of the window quite quickly, but it still rears its head occasionally if only to bait butthurt neckbeards with an episode about Rosa Parks.
Which is probably how it should be. If every episode had a Masters of the Universe "and remember kids, here's this week's moral lesson" ending, the average 21st Century viewer is too cynical to put up with that crap. But occasionally blindsiding you, that's actually pretty clever.

Fandom comes in all guises. It operates independently of age, sex, religion, creed, colour. If you like watching 22 men kicking a ball about, that's cool. If you can recite every line in every episode of Star Trek ever, that's cool. If you have more vinyl in your record collection than your average sex shop, that's cool. Hell, if your sex dungeon has more vinyl that your average record store, that's cool.
But for the love of Skywalker, if there's a discussion going on that you have no interest in, just scroll on by. You don't need to be here, you don't need to be a part of it. You don't need to be sitting there taking the piss. Other threads are available. Other forums are available. Other hobbies are available.

From a "role model" point of view then absolutely, the notion that the Doctor can be anyone and anyone can be the Doctor must be inspirational to kids. I'm less convinced though how having a fanny or a tan is going to "inject life" into anything.

I haven't really liked the show since the reboot, but I had to follow and report on it for years - and I like to think I have a good handle on the zeitgeist and the BBC.
Whittaker wasn’t cast because she was female. She was cast despite being female, because the casting crew thought she was the best actor for the job.
The show-makers must have taken the decision to open the casting up to female actors at some point. Then I suspect a strong female candidate may have had an advantage, but obviously they wouldn't have just cast anyone regardless of their acting abilities.
Shame Michelle Gomez has played a baddie as I think she would have made a great Doctor as she can be funny, charming, and pure evil and seems to have a natural quirkiness about her.
The casting came with the show runner... he wanted someone from his "team".
There have been four or five great episodes over the last two series... too much lazy writing in too many other episodes though. Here's hoping this team get more right and less wrong with the episodes they have left, and leave us wanting more rather than cheering the change...
