Question:
1. Who should it be?
2. Who will it be?
-------------------------------------------------
1. Andrew Scott / Matt Berry
2. Somebody rubbish.
I think a more pertinent question is which direction will the writing go in, it's become distinctly meh recently. I rather felt that Whittakers entrance as a female doctor was seriously undermined by the scripts (and her goofy acting).

Agree.
Andrew Scott if it is dark and edgy or Matt Berry for loud buffoonery.
Jodie Whittaker was compromised by not-so-great scripts. All of the “fam” stuff etc. But hey, it is a kid’s programme and I am 52.

Thanks for your insight.

Ah, the old posting on a thread to say how much you don't care about the subject of the thread thing. Well done, go you.
Her out of Fleabag?
Michaela Coel?
Daniel Craig now he's finished being 007?
Kylie Minogue?
Bit of a poisoned chalice though really, innit?
I think a more pertinent question is which direction will the writing go in, it’s become distinctly meh recently.
Sadly this is the case.. it's now gone all "this is the message that all children should take away from this story"
Whereas it used to be "lets fight some monsters"
To answer the question, the thing probably needs a break, or a significant shift in direction and, well, funding. Compared to output from Netflix, Disney etc, it looks pretty low-rent.
Mleh, I'm a a fan really, but the last series, the writing was so piss poor, and lets not kid ourselves that it was much better beforehand.
It'll be a white bloke in his 40 who can act a bit. Who plays Dr Who shouldn't be the point of it after all.
So yeah, who cares?
Who cares
12 year olds?
It’ll be a white bloke in his 40
I'd put money on it being a person of colour actually.

A couple of episodes of Loki looked like they were filmed in a quarry- very 70s Dr Who/Blake's 7.
Riz Ahmed.
Surely Paddy McGuiness or Claire Balding
Riz Ahmed.
Yeah he's awesome, but they've about as much chance of getting George Clooney to do it.
Claire Balding
Made me LOL.
Eddie Izzard doing it as Claire Balding?
Dr Who just makes me sad nowadays - some of the David Tennant/Matt Smith story arcs were almost up there with my very favourite Joss Whedon sc-fi series (even though Dr Who has always looked pretty low rent in comparison), but I can't even watch it anymore.
Shall we take a moment to enjoy this?

Nah, the "sizable minority" (as I seem to recall it was called) who thought that the world was ending because the last Dr had a vagina will properly loose their collective shit if he/she turns out to be black. I'd imagine that the BBC, given the culture war that's currently swirling around them and the right wing papers, will want to totally swerve that one.
So, yeah, white man mid 40's slightly good looking, someone the grannies can say "Ooh, isn't he charming" etc etc...
Jo Martin would be a simple choice.

someone the grannies can say “Ooh, isn’t he charming”
Snoop Dog
Tardis door opens, the mist from a Maplin's smoke machine clears to reveal Snoop in a big fur coat, an unseen voice calls out "Exterminate!!!"
"Darleks.......................
Fo Shizzle?"
I'd be quite happy for Jody Whitticker to continue with better writing and direction.
Brian blessed.

I honestly think you're overestimating how racist the UK is. Do you spend a lot of time on Twitter?
I really can't see it generating the same controversy as the prospect of a black James Bond, where there was contradictory source material.
Well, going by the photo that separates every 3rd post on this thread it's definitely going to be Susan Tully.
I don't really care because I'm not interested but what I do know...

Alot of old doctor who were filmed in Gllyn Rhonwy quarry on the West Bank of Llyn Padarn. I know this because i have worked on a proposal to flood it.
I honestly think you’re overestimating how racist the UK is
Hope you're right. Either way I think the writers of the last series after giving the job to Jody sat back and said "A Wimmin! look, a wimminz, everybody look at what we've done..." and then used that as an excuse/forgot how to write a decent show...I couldn't give a toss (I think I might have said) who the next Dr is as long as it's well written and not pulled out of some-ones arse at the last minute. (which it felt like at times last season)
Boris Johnson.
Send him into ****ing space 😂
Boris Johnson as a time lord? he could go back and still **** everything up.
Well, going by the photo that separates every 3rd post on this thread it’s definitely going to be Susan Tully.
Michelle Ryan in my case...**
Seeing how she looks at 36 is heart breaking ,so it would be good for her to pop back in time a bit to tidy herself up
** to be fair, she looks every bit as good as she ever did 😉

I think you're misunderstanding the culture war. The faux outrage won't be because the new Doctor is an actor of colour, it'll be because the BBC chose them because they are an actor of colour, which serves as another excuse to beat the BBC for being all snowflakey and woke.
Writing has been poor since Matt Smith left, and the only episode I remember enjoying from Peter Capaldi being the Dr was the one with two masters- Michelle Gomez and John Simm.
Shame as I thought it was a great piece of casting, similarly I think Jodie Whittaker has been hamstrung by poor scripts and hasn't had the story lines Matt or David Tennant or even Christopher Eccleston had the opportunity to enjoy.
Jo Martin would be a simple choice.
^ End of thread.
Phil Mitchell.
Paul Whitehouse or Vinnie Jones.
Ricky Tomlinson or Michael Sheen
Joe Cocker. He must be thinking of branching out from the music biz, after all he's not released any new stuff for ages.
Adults who really like Dr Who are a bit weird in the same way that 40-something year olds who are very passionate about Harry Potter are. It's quite unsettling. What's wrong with you people?
Shall we take a moment to enjoy this?
As long as we can have this:
1963! Bow down before greatness, Orbital, and all others who followed. Always the best bit of Dr Who for me. The genius of Delia Derbyshire is criminally unrecognised. That sound alone gives me the chills, never mind the Daleks!

Matt Berry FTW.
(Although Martin Sheen is a close second. An added bonus with that choice is that it would provide plenty of material for another season of the Tennant / Sheen Staged show.)
Samuel L Jackson.
But it will be carp without new writers.
Actually the more I think about it the more I think Vinnie Jones would be ideal, minus the swearing and the violence of course.
Assistant: "Doctor the tardis has landed on the planet of the daleks"
Dr Vinnie Who: "Well **** me"
Rhymes with duck.
Who would play a good assistant to Dr Vinnie Who? 🤔

See, also, Lego.
Andrew Scott
OMG - Moriarty would be brilliant.

Why did any of you even bother open the thread then? You actively come to a discussion you have no interest in and yet we're the ones with a problem?
Let people enjoy things, piss off to a football thread or politics or something.
Anyway.
Bookies' favourite is Olly Someoneorother who's as camp as a fire sale in Go Outdoors. I can't see it myself because he's a bit too young, but it'd almost be worth it just to watch the bottom half of the Internet explode when he winks at Captain Jack and tells him it's bigger on the inside. Given previous track records of both betting odds and the rumour mill, the answer to "who will it be?" is likely Olly.
A close second are Richard Ayoade and Kris Marshall. I'd be happy with either of those, but speaking as a closet Death In Paradise fan I think Kris would be brilliant.
Jo Martin? I dunno... I wasn't convinced, but she had like 15 minutes of screen time and it usually takes a full series for a new Doctor (and their writers) to find their feet properly so, could work?
To my mind the perfect Doctor needs three things. An air of other-worldly alien-ness; a sense of silliness and fun; and the ability to turn on the gravitas and darkness when needed. The latter is where Matt Smith fell down for me, he absolutely nailed the quirky and eccentric but when he was in scenes like shouting down the universe in the Pandorica arc he had all the presence menace of a cheese sandwich. And I'm rather suspicious that both Olly and Richard would suffer similarly, I can't quite see Moss from the IT Crowd walking into a room and the room going "ah, he's in charge."
Richard Ayoade
He's a very good actor with an international fanbase.
Can't see him being interested at this stage of his career.
Wonder if Ainsley Harriot's busy these days?
As to "who do I want?" that's a tougher question. I can't see a way of working it unless it's a spin-off show, but who I'd really like to see given more screen time is Paul McGann. He's absolutely killing it in the Big Finish audio dramas and his "Night of the Doctor" short was the greatest mic drop since the show restarted in 2005.
A close second are Richard Ayoade and Kris Marshall. I’d be happy with either of those, but speaking as a closet Death In Paradise fan I think Kris would be brilliant.
Yes! I've never watched Death in Paradise but I genuinely thought he was brilliant in My Family. He would be a great doctor and actually has the comedic chops to make some of the cringey writing that Jodie has been stuck with work.
Samuel L Jackson.
It would take a lot of bleeping out to get on the telly for 7pm......
I'll go away but I might come back later under dark and Slytherin...🤦♂️
I’ve never watched Death in Paradise
It's a guilty pleasure. It's basically the same show every week and in Doctor Who fashion they're now on their fourth incarnation (regeneration?) of broadly the same lead character. The first actor whose name I can't remember was great, Kris was superb, after that we had Ardle O'Hanlon which didn't really work for me and Ralf Little who does what he can with the role but the character he's been given is just bloody irritating.
It's worth a punt if only for the first two Doc- uh, detectives' run. It's basically Columbo set on a tropical island.
Why did any of you even bother open the thread then?
why don't you read the thread in it's entirety before making contributions, that way it doesn't look like you haven't read the thread before contributing?
I did. I almost always do. Apologies if I misinterpreted intent, text lacks nuance.
Someone vegan, gender fluid, black and Muslim.
Dalek storylines could be based on moped knife gangs terrorising old people in villages. Coming to a village near you, be afraid, it's not just potholes threatening the retired villagers way of life!
Richard Ayoade is an excellent call - as you all say, if the wirting improves. Or get Chris O'Dowd drunk and have him play it?
They should definitely release an auditions reel. A public vote might be fun, if you want Boaty MacBoat Face to play the character.
To my mind the perfect Doctor needs three things. An air of other-worldly alien-ness; a sense of silliness and fun; and the ability to turn on the gravitas and darkness when needed
Which is why Christopher Eccleston was and shall remain the Dr Who par excellence. Of course he had a perfect assistant too - and good script writers.
Also - Idris Elba, cos he is great in everything. Or Robert Carlyle - same reason.
Robert Carlyle in Bond precludes his entry to acting Heaven
1: PerchyPanther
2: I have no idea. The last time I watched it the doctor was Sylvester McCoy
What has happened to Perchy?
What has happened to Perchy?
He won the first STW quiz and retired to the Costa Del Punna on the proceeds.
In seriousness, it's a good question. I've not noticed him about for a bit. I hope he's OK.
Which is why Christopher Eccleston was and shall remain the Dr Who par excellence.
Toss-up for me between Ecclescake and Tennant in post-2005 New Who. I could happily believe that either of them were from another planet.
Chris has joined the ranks of Big Finish now and I'm very excited about that. I would pay good money for an 8-9-10 Three Doctors crossover story.
it’s now gone all “this is the message that all children should take away from this story”
Whereas it used to be “lets fight some monsters”
Really? The whole premise of Dr Who was that it should educate as well as entertain; that goes right back to the beginning in 1964! There you go, the Beeb was ‘woke’ even then, they even had female assistants to the Doctor who were actually more than just someone to scream loudly at the next monster.
Adults who really like Dr Who are a bit weird in the same way that 40-something year olds who are very passionate about Harry Potter are. It’s quite unsettling. What’s wrong with you people?
That’s your opinion. You do know that there are often fictional characters and stories that can work on a number of different levels, don’t you?
Or possibly not.
Personally, I find the idea that there are grown men who obsess about My Little Pony a little odd, but it’s not for me to criticise.
Why did any of you even bother open the thread then? You actively come to a discussion you have no interest in and yet we’re the ones with a problem?

Oh, the ironing 🤣

I think Capaldi nailed it, he could be all three, sometimes almost at the same time, but he could suddenly look like someone you wouldn’t want to turn your back on, in case you ended up with something sharp stuck out of it.
A trait he shared with the first Doctor.
You Kris Marshall fans should try and find a short series he did called My Life In Film. It was superb.
So I would add in, as the doctor has to have edge, Eccleston and tenner exuded the danger and sometimes cruelty of the doctor, so
Robert Lindsay....just a brilliant actor and slightly funny menacingly odd
Suzanne Jones....been in two doctor who, well Sarah jones chronicles and Dr who, again you can believe the dark side.
The whole premise of Dr Who was that it should educate as well as entertain; that goes right back to the beginning in 1964!
It was. That was how the Hartnell era was pitched to the Beeb and is in no small part why it was actually commissioned. Fifty years ago. The educational notion went out of the window quite quickly, but it still rears its head occasionally if only to bait butthurt neckbeards with an episode about Rosa Parks.
Which is probably how it should be. If every episode had a Masters of the Universe "and remember kids, here's this week's moral lesson" ending, the average 21st Century viewer is too cynical to put up with that crap. But occasionally blindsiding you, that's actually pretty clever.
Thank you for saying what I was thinking! 😎
Honestly, I'm just so very through with this bullshit now.
In my formative years at school I got beaten up for being a geek, for being different.
Suddenly we had Geek Chic and it was cool! It was acceptable! I wasn't a freak! "Normal" people were walking around wearing Atari tee-shirts.
Then the "fandom", or at least a minority element of it, snapped back with gatekeeping douchebaggery like "well, you say you're a fan but you don't even know which edition of Detective Comics Batman first appeared in!" Fortunately they quickly got put in the sack by everyone else.
And now we've almost gone full circle, thirty-odd years on from my childhood which was made very painful because I was a bit weird and we've now got grown-ass adults sneering at other grown-ass adults because they're passionate about something that the sneerer isn't into. Well you know what? To paraphrase a pre-regeneration Twelfth Doctor: **** the **** off to ****, and when you get there, keep *ing off.
I'm done with this hypocritical ****tery. Done. They don't get to do it to us any more. I will defend until my dying breath the right for a larger lass to go to a sci-fi con (or ASDA) and dress in Princess Leia's bikini without fear of being mocked by Neanderthals. Because, she's actually really hot, and very brave, and likely very insecure, and she's having fun. And because the *ers that are taking the piss, they're no strangers to a pork pie themselves and they'll think nothing of cosplaying as their favourite footballer in the pub on a Saturday night.
Yes I'm angry. This is an open wound for me and I've been silent - nay, I've been shouted down and bullied into silence - for 40 years. These are my people, this is my crowd, and I will DAMN well stand for people who are where I was a few decades ago and are daring to stick their shy nerdy little heads above the parapet for the first time.
I've met adult fans of My Little Pony. They're fabulous. Lego have literally (and perhaps short-sightedly) just rebranded their Creator range as "Adult Lego." If someone is going to rag on someone else for liking a family TV show that's been going since the early 60s then they can get in the ****ing sea, I'm not putting up with it any more. Know what, I shouldn't have to put up with it any more. And if you're reading this post and disagreeing with me then you've just proved my gorram point, why are you even here?
Fandom comes in all guises. It operates independently of age, sex, religion, creed, colour. If you like watching 22 men kicking a ball about, that's cool. If you can recite every line in every episode of Star Trek ever, that's cool. If you have more vinyl in your record collection than your average sex shop, that's cool. Hell, if your sex dungeon has more vinyl that your average record store, that's cool.
But for the love of Skywalker, if there's a discussion going on that you have no interest in, just scroll on by. You don't need to be here, you don't need to be a part of it. You don't need to be sitting there taking the piss. Other threads are available. Other forums are available. Other hobbies are available.
Go read / do something you like. Let everyone else enjoy their things.
(and, breathe)
I don't really care who the next Dr will be. It's often daft, but I like watching it, and in between the daftness sometimes slips in some out-there ideas.
When I first heard the Dr was going to be a woman I'll admit to initially thinking it wasn't right, but it really wasn't difficult to get over that!
Like James Bond needs either a young black, Asian or mixed race man or woman to inject life into a tired old role..
I don't think it matters. And I don't think it should matter. Contrary to the bottom half of the Internet popular belief, Whittaker wasn't cast because she was female. She was cast despite being female, because the casting crew thought she was the best actor for the job.
From a "role model" point of view then absolutely, the notion that the Doctor can be anyone and anyone can be the Doctor must be inspirational to kids. I'm less convinced though how having a fanny or a tan is going to "inject life" into anything.
Who would play a good assistant to Dr Vinnie Who? 🤔
Dennis Wise obvs
Like James Bond needs either a young black, Asian or mixed race man or woman to inject life into a tired old role..
As I said before, I would put money on this.
I haven't really liked the show since the reboot, but I had to follow and report on it for years - and I like to think I have a good handle on the zeitgeist and the BBC.
Whittaker wasn’t cast because she was female. She was cast despite being female, because the casting crew thought she was the best actor for the job.
The show-makers must have taken the decision to open the casting up to female actors at some point. Then I suspect a strong female candidate may have had an advantage, but obviously they wouldn't have just cast anyone regardless of their acting abilities.
Shame Michelle Gomez has played a baddie as I think she would have made a great Doctor as she can be funny, charming, and pure evil and seems to have a natural quirkiness about her.
The casting came with the show runner... he wanted someone from his "team".
There have been four or five great episodes over the last two series... too much lazy writing in too many other episodes though. Here's hoping this team get more right and less wrong with the episodes they have left, and leave us wanting more rather than cheering the change...
Do you have some examples of the good episodes I don't hear you ask...
It Takes You Away (relies on a lot earlier family stuff, so don't watch in isolation)
Demons of the Punjab (yes, that's your history that is, told with heart)
The Haunting of Villa Diodati (if you can time travel, and have the BBC's resources, make period drama)
Mr Bean
Another excuse for not watching it.
Michelle Gomez in action
