True but the same could be said for Die Hard or Pulp Fiction and many many others, even classics like Where Eagles Dare, A fist full of Dollars..

PS: for this reason my g/f now hates The Mummy and Die hard

Z1ppy so you are calling it a cult* classic?

*possibly not the right word but it has a good story, filming, characters and its endearing. I think that last word says it.

True, the second ones quite good too.

But the third is proper shite.

Visual fast food. Filling at the time, but ultimately not that satisfying.
And best film of all time? You have got to be shitting me!
Not even close!

I like a good action movie, but all my favourite films generally involve much more character development or carry a strong feel, or tone of a film. the mummy is ok. I happily watch it when it's repeated on tv, but It's not anywhere near what I regard as 'best', even if there were such a thing.

So, character - something like one flew over the cuckoos nest, American Beauty, The others
Tone - Blade runner, Alien, Brazil.
Action with some kind of credible character acting - nearest I can get is say, Dances with Wolves or Gladiator
No brain actioner - there are so many, but terminator, guardians of the Galaxy, avengers, original robocop.

I don't think its a great film - certainly in comparison to anything listed above - what its proved to be good at is being repeated so often on tv - in that you can just start watching it at any point and stop watching it at any point and the bit you watch is ok on its own.

Its not even the best film of its genre never mind be the next Citizen Kane

Its a decent waste of time and highly watchable but it is no Die hard or Predator

You do know Top gears on though tut tut

No I'd not suggest the mummy is a true classic, just very watchable, like many classics, cult or not

I feel the same about Vertical limit, great trashy action flick.

Pulp fiction YES
Dollar Westerns Yes
The Mummy NO

It's better than something like Cocktail but that's about as much praise as I can give it. I'd rather watch Kelly's Heros.

Original RoboCop is far from a "no brain" actioner...

But yeah, The Mummy. Decent escapist fun, but it ain't no Moulin Rouge.

Watched it for the first time in about 20 years the other night. Still great mindless entertainment.

Always being shown on itv-1,2,3 or 4 is not the same as "the best film of all time".

It's always on as weekend schedule filler because the rights were cheap, and the rights were cheap because it is a crappy kids action film. It wouldn't make it into most sane people's top 100...

Robocop is a work of genius. And I mean that without any irony whatsoever.

The Mummy is certainly close to being the worst film ever, yet still manages somehow to outclass 'Stargate'

"This one's for King Tut - a**hole!" *BADAPOOHM!*

You're all wrong. This is the best film ever. The language is a bit strong and content a bit close to the bone for here but get the movie.
You'll love it.

Amelie, Its sublime.

I've no argument with that.
Two absolutely outstanding films that never get shown on TV, are hardly ever mentioned, but I can watch over and over again: Diva and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid.
Sheer quality.

I hate Die Hard and Pulp Fiction, so you're wrong. Tremors is pretty good, as is Starship Troopers. But for true greatness: Independence Day.

I almost hate to admit it, but the film that I probably enjoyed the most watching was Forrest Gump.

Also the first Pirates of the Caribbean was brilliant.

Gladiator, really? The character development is pretty much right on par with the Mummy. Cliche after cliche in gladiator. It's not a bad film for all that but it's hardly the thinking person's action film.

The Mummy? Best Film of all time?

No wonder he worships teapot idolatry .

This of course is patently wrong when everyone knows Terminator 2 is the best film of all time.

Shoot 'Em Up is way better. Particularly because it dispenses with the entire notion of "plot" so no gun-totin' or baddie-smashin' time is wasted on pointless contrivances like character development.
What's it about? No idea but look at the way he killed the bad guy with a carrot.

Have look at Jeremiah Johnson, that's my favorite movie to get lost in. "Watch yer top not".

Someone mentioned Brazil above, outstanding choice.
