Has anyone else had enough of being told what the bloody 'markets' are doing and thinking as if they are some singular entity, and secondly as if the markets have the slightest clue about a) what is going on and b) what will be going on in the future?

Or is it just me?

It gives the BBC a chance to wheel out Peston. It does look like a good time to buy however...

My Italian neighbour has just had a animated discussion with my Italian wife [as they do] and apparently there are good tomatoes today in the market

I don't know who we're complaining about here...

Is it news readers, stock market traders, market stall holders...or Italians?

I like listening to Peston. I think he talks rubbish mostly, but it's the way he keeps doing those vomiting noises which tickles me.

Borough Market's gone up its own derriere a bit of late.

I used to quite like Leicester fruit and veg market although the newer covered market smelt a bit like a car park stairwell. By contrast Oxford's covered market is very nice especially if you're after game.

This being STW, it'll be everything. I suspect it's all down to the public sector pensions. Or Thatcher. Or dole scroungers and benefit cheats. Or the wrong tyres.

£50bn wiped off yesterday and £40bn today, I know it's a good time to buy some stocks or trusts but I cant get motivated to do, I'll regret it when the bounce occurs.

What I don't understand about this whole 'the worlds economy is in turmoil' thing is, how does it effect me on a day to day level?

Now i realise that's a very basic level of understanding but I just don't have it as (as stated above) there is nothing I can do about the World's economy so I tend not to pay much attention to it, but can someone please try to explain it to me?

The UK government is "fully functioning" in the midst of the eurozone crisis despite David Cameron and George Osborne being on holiday, William Hague has said.

That means that Clegg is in charge...

I know, I voted Lib Dem last year.

If only there was some way we could compare all these markets

The markets reflect various things about the actual state of the economy, afaik.

They reflect traders' confidence in the state of the economy. Which ain't the same thing.

Are you contemplating some kind of index?

Who would run such a thing

there's a market next the the reading council offices and the 99p store on wednesdays and fridays, if you want Afro-Caribbean diet specific vegetables, clothes with pictures of bob marley on them, new era caps, mobile phone accessories or bongs then its the place to go. on a good day there's about... 6 stalls.
