Last night I watch Oprah in discussion with Pharrell Williams. A very surprising humble and honest interview IMO but something that stuck with me was this;
He admits himself that I the past 10 years and whilst working within the industry he saw him self as the next global superstar ie the new jay z, the next snoop etc. and then he said something which rang very true "... I've come to realise that I'm not what I've always alluded to, and that actually I'm happy being the man next to the man.."
It started making me think of people like Nick Hauer, and other sidekicks who have very successful outcomes but are not necessarily "the man" and that perhaps not having to have a desire to do is actually ok. For me this comes at a time where an opportunity to put the job title I've always wanted on my CV, on it. But now it's there for the taking I'm thinking that I prefer my life and the way it's organised as it is, and being "the man" with all it's compromises is not so great after all.
Just sayin' like. *shrugs*
I get where you're coming from, in my job I could feasibly progress up the food chain past the point of having a salary and enter the big boys place where you negotiate your own. On the other hand with that luxury comes the responsibility which is both time consuming and leaves you open to prosecution of things went wrong. I can see why someone would be content not to enter those halls and just sit happily in the lobby with a good seat.
Indeed, ones concept of success can change, and may not align with the common conceptions.
Why does everyone think jay z is a singer? The bloke cannot sing. 🙄
No such thing as successful if a person's life still evolves around material things.
🙂
I would rather be Bernie Taupin than Elton John

There was a line in the west wing that I loved... "You know what the difference is between you and me? I want to be the guy. You want to be the guy the guy counts on."
I don't understand "Oprah"
Wot dat den?

To be fair, he's married to Beyoncé, which I think could make me happy in a very non-material way.
Spent my 20s wanting to be the man, putting in the hours and wasting my pretty decent salary.
Having kids in my 30s made me appreciate the bigger picture.
Now a smaller cog in a successful machine. Still wouldn't mind some more money for it though!
Success for me is rewarding trip to the toilet.

This is essentially it. However, when the big guy's risk and reward includes the chop or promotion away from that lieutenant, they are either dragged along of left adrift for others to discover. In my mind if you are happy to remain successful you have to ensure there's a least a quiet appreciation that you played a significant part of the success.

Hmm.. you can use your money to buy things, or you can use it to buy free time.
You want to think that you are really cool and don't want the promotion that you think is there for you but on the other hand you are very career minded and will always regret if you don't grasp your opportunity.
You are Gollum and I claim my £10.

Need the money eh?
Yeah , I wasted all my promotion opportunities .
