Released as there’s some sort of American sport on this Sunday.

Absolutely cracking episode.

Superbowl weekend, where one game of football can last almost the entire weekend!

Was a good episode, not bloated at all 😉

Brilliant.  Just keeps on getting better.  Awesome stuff.

I've played both games on the PS4 (not quite finished the second game yet, but not far to go) and it makes for great viewing.  And if you haven't played the games it matters not one jot - it's still great 👍

I'm completely at a loss about why people rave about this, it's ordinary verging on dull at times. I enjoyed Ep 3 because there was actually a bit of characterisation, even if it was a bit unsubtle.

Definitely starting to think it's just not for me!

I'm really enjoying it, although I'm a bit concerned by the fact you know the central two characters aren't going to die but anyone else almost certainly isn't going to survive for more than an episode or two. In contrast The Walking Dead (before it went crap after a 3 or 4 seasons) developed the peripheral characters a lot more before suddenly killing them off so you actually cared about them a bit when it happened. Hopefully the format will change a bit though once they reach their current destination (I'm not actually familiar with the plot of the game, I hope it's not continual travelling to new places and meeting different styles of baddie humans each time, as TWD already did that)

yeah. I'm guessing most of the people loving it are fans of the games. As mentioned above, there's no sense of danger/peril at all for the two main characters so that dulls the edge somewhat, and everyone else they meet seems to be a redshirt so there's no chance of any character development. 😂 Nick Offerman ep was great though, hopefully they'll do more like that.

That's the central problem of a faithful game to tv adaptation. By its nature, in the game you move forwards as Joel and Ellie, and no other character can join that 'quest' for more than a brief period. You always have to be progressing to different areas/challenges, so you can't have a proper relationship with the non-player characters. They've tried to get around it by featuring extended back stories, but I'm not sure it quite succeeds.

That said, bit disappointed they've not translated 'endlessly dying to a boss and going back to the last checkpoint until you chuck your controller at the telly' into the tv series.

I'd never heard of the game until this came out. I was skeptical about trying to make a tv show based on a game, although Halo was quite decent. I find The Last of Us entertaining, but it's obvious that the format requires them to overcome a sequence of opponents and obstacles. In a way, it's similar to Quantum Leap, where there's no doubt that the leaper will figure out how to solve the problem at hand. Pedro Pascal and Lyanna Mormont are well-cast, so are the rest of the cast. It's not the greatest show on tv but it's entertaining enough to look forward to the next episode.

Halo was absolutely terrible except for the odd battle scene (and only because I was a massive Halo fan BITD!) 😃

I wonder if Sky think it's amusing to show Pedro doing the wine adverts in the breaks on Sky Atlantic. It's annoying!

Really enjoyed this episode, I didn't like the character Ellie to start with but as the episodes go by I really like her more and more. I also really like that Bella Ramsey looks like an everyday normal person and not some dainty model.

^^ Completely agree, I found Ellie a real struggle for the first 2 episodes but she's developed into a great and occasionally very funny character!

Was the 3 month "time hop" in the game too, does anybody know?

So last week's episode was ok but nothing special in my opinion.

This week's...

Holy molly. 😲

And Joel at the end, when he calls her that. 🥹

Last episode of the season next week.

Just caught up, great episode which sticks pretty closely to the game.

Spoiler
It was years ago when I played it, but playing the character of Ellie creeping around the burning restaurant to stalk/escape Mr cannibal preacher was very tense and memorable gameplay!

Knowing some of what's coming from the game, there's some great TV to come. Both in the final episode of this series and (hopefully) in the next to cover the Last of us 2.

Part 1 does on occasion. You'll finish a chapter and the next will be captioned 'Winter' and the story has moved on a few months. Still pretty linear though. Part 2 is very different.

Caught up on the last 2 episodes last night. Still think it's great.

Got confused in episode 3 with the 6 hour love scene, gave up after that. Talk about one of the slowest series I've ever watched. It just dragged on and on. Never heard of the game but when some of you were raving about it, I thought I'd try it.

It was very good. First person shooter section was definitely a wink at the audience... And obv at least another series. I dunno how the game ends but it seemed unlikely they'd find a cure and everyone go home, what with some of the horrendous mutations... https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/fungal-nail/

I've played through the game(s) multiple times and I'm still on the fence about the tv series. It manages to move both faster and slower than the game - there are large, memorable, parts of the game that are missing from the show (and tbf possibly wouldn't map over to a show very well). There's also a distinct lack of zombies. The characters in the show also feel a little shallow to me but I'm pretty sure that's because I've sunk hours and hours into the games, which aren't as limited in time to tell the story.

Also if the last episode is how the game ended I think I would've done things differently.

still a cracking show, looking forward to seeing what they do with season 2, playing through it now and I have a feeling they may not mirror it a closely as they did this season.

They ended the same way, and you don't get a choice in how to end it in the game.

Can a human really bite through a pair of jeans? Just wear two pairs of jeans and two denim jackets, a big pair of boots, motorbike gloves and helmet. So far all the bites have been on forearms, legs and torsos.

In last nights episode, they ran through the building without a care in the world. And those giraffes would have been killed and eaten!

And if you found 1 human who was immune, you would do far more less intrusive tests before going straight for removing the brain but it's following the computer game so I get that.

Despite a few annoying things I'm still enjoying it.

Its kind of the opposite to the walking dead. TWD started with zombies that killed everyone but in the end they were taken out in a second and it moved towards surving against the living. I think TLOU will be the opposite and it will move towards surving the infected and they will play a bigger part.

Roll on season 2!

Was good, enjoyed it overall, no real weaknesses in the show, it felt rushed as they went through the first game in one season, now setting up part 2 for season 2, which will bring along a whole host of issues for the show unfortunately.

Can't really put it up against other stuff like the walking dead, that was a show that started on a tight budget and was slowed down to save money, i.e. having them on one set for a long time, such as the farm, the prison and so on, and went on far too long.

Will be interesting to see the developments for the show, they seem to have set into the show early the reality that the dead/infected aren't the issue, it's the society that comes after devastation, TWD took a couple of seasons to do that, TLOU did it in the pilot.

It’s a ‘meh’ from me. I had misgivings over the them that they cast to play Ellie. Them has eyes like a shark, rather than the open expressive Ellie from the games.

Constant virtue signalling throughout the season, and you can’t help but feel that your are constantly being preached to.

Pedro absolutely nails it, though. He almost saves it. All in all a travesty given how good the games were!

Thought the casting is spot on for Part 1, i think Bella Ramsey was good in the role of Ellie, but it's going to be a struggle in Season 2 and onwards, as i don't think she's going to change much, whereas Ellie changes a hell of a lot between it. Will be interesting how they do it, we know if they stick with the game we'll lose one main character, that leaves a lot of show on someone who might not be the best fit after the age jump of the character.

But, will wait and see, it's a little annoying getting into it knowing what's coming, same with the Ned Stark or the red wedding i guess!

Bella Ramsey is currently 19 years old, playing a 14 year old. Ellie is 19 in part 2.

I really don't see that being an issue...

Also, spoilers, please. Those who've played the games know what happens in the story but a lot don't.

The game character develops quite a bit, Bella will still look exactly the same, she has that benefit of being able to play someone younger, but she will still be the same size and looks in season 2, it's a bit like the reverse curse of child actors having to be replaced as they get bigger.

Spoiler

The bigger issue for me though is that can she lead a show like this, the one thing that's been noticeable is that you have the main two characters, then every other character is kind of in it for one episode, it's not really got the 'original' cast size that other shows have, where they can then whittle down over the seasons, this one will be introducing new characters, then pretty much losing them quick.

She doesn't care, as above, but if you do "them" is indeed a pronoun and doesn't need another pronoun in front of it. Describing someone as "a them" conveys something about you, besides being vulnerable to grammar pedantry.

Whatever, she's great in LoU as she was in GoT, Though she is indeed a shorty.

+1, I don't think there's an issue with them doing "1 year later..." in the show rather than the larger jump in the game.

I think they'll consider swapping the brother's storyline to keep cast issues to a minimum.

Few reports that part 2 will be split into two more series.

Personally I think the story is strong enough to stand alone, doesn't need you to have played the games, but it's def an added dimension to see locations you've 'been to' and events that you've 'experienced'.

I can imagine there is a lot of untold story between the games they can fill in so as not to lose a popular key character in the first episode.

I had misgivings over the them that they cast to play Ellie

I had misgivings over the girl they cast to play Ellie.

I'm still trying to get to grips with the whole gender pronoun thing, it's at odds with what has been grammatically correct all my life – rather than me simply being polemic/a troll... Replace the above bold text with a gender-neutral pronoun and what do you get? Or is it safer to simply sidestep the whole issue and opt for a job description, as you did?

Better to get it wrong here, than get hauled over the coals at work, further down the line?

Regardless, to my original point, I personally couldn't care less if Bella Ramsey self-identifies as a golden retriever - my point is that having played the games I didn't think Bella was a good fit for Ellie. If you hadn't played the games then Bella may have been perfectly suited to playing Ellie. Bella certainly nailed their role in GoT, but that role had a creepy 'uncanny valley' facet to it. The Ellie, in the games, had neither of those qualities. I have played the games and in my mind I just couldn't get past how miscast Bella was as Ellie, and that ruined it for me.

Don't get me started on just how miscast/misdirected The Third Sister was in Kenobi. Compare with Denise Gough's spine tingling portrayal of Dedra Meero in Andor, and you come to appreciate how important a believable antagonist is. The portrayal of The Third Sister torpedoed the whole of Kenobi for me. You never once felt as though there was any real threat to Kenobi.

As good as The Last of Us was, it feels to me as though it was a bit of a low point for HBO. It certainly wasn't in the same league as Generation Kill, The Sopranos or The Wire.

So here's a gender-neutral pronoun thought experiment for you...

Imagine, for the sake of an example, the Board of Directors are looking to hire a new Sales Director. You ask your colleague if they know if there has been any progress in filling the position, to which they reply

"Yeah, they've hired a lady."

The gender neutral version might be:

"Yeah, they've hired a they." Does the first 'they' refer to the Board of Directors (multiple individuals) or a single individual with multiple genders? Likewise the second 'they'... today a valid parsing of this response could be a Sam Smith hiring another Sam Smith?

Or is it any less confusing to say:

"Yeah, they've hired a them".

Or do you sidestep the entire conundrum and say:

"Yeah, the Board of Directors has hired a new Sales Director".

How does one navigate this? Thoughts? I wonder what Noam Chomsky's take is on this issue?

This is to discuss TLOU. I suggest if you’re struggling with pronouns then start a new thread, it may not end well know. I mean you’ve barely posted in 2 years then come on a thread about TV show to discuss pronouns.

I totally take your point on board.

But to be fair I did come here to discuss TLOU, and I made a few valid points, but the only thing that was cherry picked from my post on was my use of pronouns... so here we are.

“Yeah, they’ve hired a lady.”

I *love* the way you happily use gender neutral pronouns when referring to the person or people doing the hiring. And no, plurality isn't an issue.

Also, who says "they've hired a lady" anyway? Or "they've hired a man", for that matter? It's weird.

Your assertion would be more valid if people normally used 'They've hired a she" or "they've hired a he". Which, of course, is totally normal and fine and not in any way deeply weird and warped just to make a point.

The 'gender neutral' way of doing it would be the one that removes the emphasis of gender in any way, and is coincidentally the one that the vast majority of people would actually *use*:

"Yeah, they've hired someone."

It's a pretty lousy thought experiment TBH

But to be fair I did come here to discuss TLOU, and I made a few valid points, but the only thing that was cherry picked from my post on was my use of pronouns… so here we are.

To fair you claimed it was about virtue signalling as they hired a ‘the them’. You simply could have said Bella wouldn’t have been your choice for Ellie, then gone on to discuss why. But no, so you got called out.

I mean you’ve barely posted in 2 years...

And it's instantly very easy to see why. Welcome back!

Of more interest is who played Ellie's mother in the last episode. Despite looking unsettlingly like Bella Ramsey she is more Ellie than anyone else...

Lovely circular casting.
