Inspired by the 'war Is it true????' thread, let's test how well STWers know world geography.
The following is an exercise I do with undergrads taking geography. The results are always interesting and if people post their results I'll provide a bit of interpretation. Instructions as follows:
1. Do not look at a map, that is cheating. That might mean not scrolling down.
2. Take a blank sheet of paper and draw lines down the middle of the page and across the centre. These are central lines of latitude and longitude.
3. Draw a map of the world by outlining the continents.
4. If you can add borders, labels and cities
5. If you're proper clever label the oceans, add rivers and mountain ranges
6. Photograph/scan your map and post it here for the rest of the class to [s]mock[/s] see
You first.
Way too much effort involved there.
Really tempted to post an image off the web here, but don't want to ruin it for anybody who fancies putting the effort in and doing it properly.

May we mock your English first?
Far to much effort. I shall sit at the back and hum annoyingly
nah, i'll just point and laugh at yours
Easy (geography degree and one time geography teacher sort of and someone who just loves to sit down and look at maps/atlases). Can't do it now though as am trying to feed my daughters. So you'll have to take my word that I know my geographical stuff pretty well.
My drawing are skills are shite anyhow.
I'd be interested to see how I did with this but I'm not interested enough to do it...
when do you stop - I could draw an atlas!
how about play this game and post your scores here:
(Play as visitor, on your own)
Score: 5861, 6188
I'm thick and scared.
Can't open in iOS...
I don't have a pink crayon to colour in the British empire, and seeing as that covers at least 2/3rds of the globe it would be a pointless without.
Stoner thats great though very tricky I was getting between 4900 and 5300 🙂
Im about to sign on as stoner if someone from here wants to challenge me to a dual for world domination?

Anyone who understands maps would immediately point out the fundamental flaw in that game.
Wow I got 6920
*slaps garbett across the face with glove*
come back in and fight like a man then!
got any non-bacon flavour non-look-like bacon non-taste like bacon crisps? I like 'em!

Are you a grumpy because no-one is playing your game properly? 😉
nah. Someone stole the geography teacher's colouring in pencils 😉

I do this with undergrads, you're nothing compared to them!

I teach geography at university. We use felt tips.
We use felt tips
good idea. Shouldnt let undergrads loose with pointy pencils.
Beginner's luck here!
got to go feed the mini-mes.
back later
Score: 5821 - silly error on Pheonix, USA

I am intrigued. Having an understanding of maps I am not entirely sure why the game itself is flawed. I have thoroughly enjoyed the last half an hour or so playing it.
Best score so far 6236.
Here is why:
...but as a game it's good. They had to choose a representation of some sort.
So what we need is a 3D version with a spinning globe. A plug in for Google Earth perhaps.
Given the game is based on distances surely you'd chose a representation where distances are accurate. A Peter's project would sort the problem.
Hopefully the game is taking this into account. But it is the representation that most people are familiar with.
I like your idea of the first game though. Pity you can't doodle in a forum reply, may have got some maps then.
That game is quite good fun, best score so far is a lucky 7579!
I have been caught out on Indonesian, Canadian and Central Asian cities.
I like oggles' map with the big arrow and Björk pointing to Iceland, mainly because I'm listening to Björk's Volta at the moment.
6252
Still more point to it than Geography teaching... 😉
I have comprehensively demonstrated that I don't know where anywhere in Russia is. As tha gives you the option of being out by 5,000km by simply guessing that's pretty bad. 4-6,000 seems to be my range...
🙂
indonesia is flippin long - guess the wrong end and it's a low score
First effort disastrous - I wasn't quite getting how it worked.
2nd effort 6026 - Yay!
3rd - 6075
4th - Embarrassingly low when I tried US alone 😳
7493 8)
I got some countries in the wrong place... 😳
I won't tell you my score, but it's better than Chvck...LOL
1819 😆
Never been good with countries, know the vague areas but no clue on exact locations!
Ive managed 1864km off! is that the worst ever?
Best score so far 4096 😯
😉
I managed to get a continent wrong on one go. 🙂
best is 6444
Not good on former soviet republics and obscure cities in Canada
