Isn't he always?

Agreed. Possibility that Maguire was cast as they needed DiCaprio and he's best buds with Maguire.

When I first heard, I thought that Karey Mulligan would make an excellent Daisy, but she was a bit...meh.

Don't really know why they bothered to remake it.

It looked promising from the trailer, but the film itself was 2:22.0 of numbness!

The book is such a classic that it would always be difficult to bring it to film, sadly by casting both Di Caprio and Maguire plus adding a load of CGI they made it even more difficult.

Baz Luhrmann is a hugely over rated director and a one trick pony if ever there was one. If in doubt make everything as gay as possible = fabulous darling.

Enjoyed it although I can't help feel that seeing it in a gloriously restored 1930's Art Deco cinema made me more well disposed towards it. Seemed somewhat appropriate in that setting.

With the exception of Titanic, I like anything with DiCaprio in it....

Di Crapeo is becoming OK - see Departed. Much of his stuff is dross though.

Mixed bag - loved Catch Me If You Can, didn't mind him in Inception, Departed decent, The Beach not bad either.

Essay question: "Jay Gatsby is a crook, not a tragic hero."
Discuss.

Essay question: "Jay Gatsby is a crook, not a tragic hero."

Is there anyone who thinks he is a tragic hero?

Some people read him as a tragic hero - citing his self-sacrifice for Daisy over the car accident, or his heroic vision - as a Platonic figure who believed you could fight against the ravages of time.
