In response to something I said elsewhere on this forum, I was contacted today by another member and offered material help.

And even as I type this, yet another is on his way over to help with a seized bottom bracket.

Flipping incredible, the generosity and kindness of some people.

Thank you. 8)

I haven't done it yet 🙂 I might completely bugger up your bike.

Anyway - SaxonRider helped me out with my armchair a while ago so he also helps out random internet weirdos.

A kind soul from here once sent me a set of Skyway's he'd found in his parents garage.
Hope to get them on an old GT I'm doing up for the summer.

I once sent a forum member (pretty much a classifieds only bod I think) a "toughphone' free of charge (and fully charged, come to that) and recorded delivery, with the caveat that he would maybe like to make a small donation to charity (his choice of charity or mine, I cannae remember). I didn't get so much as a "cheers" or acknowledgement of delivery.

It's nice to be nice.

The world would be far nicer if more folk followed that path.

Nice to hear there are still decent people about.

My wife doesn't think I'm nice. I spent all evening at SaxonRider's talking about North American road trips and she was at home all alone 🙂

Most people are actually very nice, it's easy to forget that with all the horrible stuff in the press on TV etc.

Been there done that. Was not an STWer (neither, I doubt, a real Scandinavian!), but a thief cruising our classifieds for those with a guard down.

On the flipside - sterling awesomeness has arrived in others ways via real forum members, and I will back up the OP in a rousing cheer for the good and great.

the genuine help i have seen offered to people here often astounds me, from incredible donations of cash when i was raising sponsorship in memory of my friend, to people sending pretty high end bits of kit free to those desperate to get their bike rolling again, to people taking time to keep someone talking long enough to see it through the darkest of nights.

it may seem like the people on here would argue constantly but when the shit hits the fan this place is a reminder of how people the world over have a basic instinct to help one another out

True but not just on here though - the floods recently have really brought out the best in most folks. People are ace.

there is a quote from 'the martian' (book) that is fitting grum...

".......they did it because every human being has a basic instinct to help each other out. It might not seem that way sometimes, but it's true.
If a hiker gets lost in the mountains, people will coordinate a search. If a train crashes, people will line up to give blood. If an earthquake levels a city, people all over the world will send emergency supplies. This is so fundamentally human that it's found in every culture without exception. Yes, there are assholes who just don't care, but they're massively outnumbered by the people who do.”

I was invited up to Thrunton Woods by a regular on here, to show me around it, with another member who was going around for the first time.

Raul Moat was on the run that night, and the police were everywhere. Even though I was incredibly slow, they were very accommodating. That was the first time I ever met strange men in a woods.

After my spinal fusion, I got some good support on here, including someone (an anaesthetist I think) who took the trouble to write a load of helpful advice when I was still exhausted 4 months later and my GP had said I should have completely recovered by then.

I don`t know how but I only posted half of what I had typed. I was trying to also say the following

"wysiwyg" replied to my add and sent us a iphone 4 for an amazing price. This price included postage, new apple ear buds, charging cable and a new screen. So much more than we expected and son was delighted. ACE

Mrs100th rode from Newcastle to London in 24hrs a few years ago. STW generosity put a fair bit of cash into the charity buckets.

It's not just the cash and the stuff, people on here are generous with their knowledge and experience, which is something to be proud of.

I've not been on here that long but compared to other internet cycling forums, there seems to be a real camaraderie between us and a genuine intent to help and advise others. It is special and long may it continue.

I once made a seat post shim for someone on here, free as it's been a while I made anything thin walled and wasn't perfect.
Irony I about to buy the same thing.
