The label my boss gave me this morning as I have left for a doctors appointment.

I seem to have an immune system that is only intent on attacking itself not any incoming pathogens - and it isseriously beginning to p!ss me off now.

Any top tips on boosting immunity? Need to be back to 100% as soon as possible as I have a bit of a ride to do in April and it will be impossible in my current state 🙁

Exercising TOO much?

Alot of folk on here seem to ride far too much. **** that.

Listen to your body not 'oh I can make this/do this strava/compete with the others in my club'.

If you like I could do an exam on you? (I'm a Doctor).

There's a guy who I follow on twitter who has a lot to say about being fit vs being healthy and them not necessarily being the same.

He's @simon_lamb might be worth having a look at his timeline as he's linked to articles in the past etc. He may even offer advice professionally via his business.

Are you over training?

endurance athletes should have a very light week every month to ensure that they don't build up fatigue over long periods - leading to reduced immune system.

Also consider getting some winter sun, and lots of green veggies and fresh citrus fruits

This guy has some interesting theories:

Failing that, honey and garlic have well deserved reputations for boosting the immune system.

When I was younger and used to race a lot, the thinking was to take zinc to boost your immune system.

That was 20 years ago so I don't know if it is still valid.

Fittest in terms of I do the most exercise - I am not claiming any other kind of fitness (or indeed any of the title as it was a label given to me by my boss)

Unless you are one of the very very very few on here who are close to over training what about your diet? Sleep? Last couple of years I had a lot of bugs, mainly passed on from my kids who picked em up at nursery, pretty sure it was tiredness and crappy diet - I'm certainly not overtraining. fingers crossed, I've not been too bad so far this winter.

Have been living of fruit veg and lean meat for the last few weeks.

I have been told to avoid refined sugars, alcohol tea and coffee for over a year now - the only one I struggle with is coffee but I would say i generally eat healthily. If I snack during the day it tends to be fruit and nuts

are you unhealthiest in the office, today, this week or long term?

if its today - take the hint, go home, stop annoying everyone
if its ongoing/repetitive/long term - perhaps you are overdoing it

what is the bosses mark of fitness? walk up the stairs rather than the lift or ironman every other week?

AH!we seem to be struggling with the context...
DO you perhaps work in an animal testing facility for obesity and common pathogens? In which case, your boss is not lying.

What does 'immune system that is only intent on attacking itself' refer to?

Too much omega6? Do you have much omega3? Linseed or chia seeds, for example? Sprinkle on cereal in morning.

Do you rub your eyes and pick your nose a lot? That's the main route for viruses to enter your body.

Stop rubbing and picking, wash your hands as soon as you get into your house or your office from outside, get your family to do the same and give things like keyboards, TV remotes, door handles and taps a wipe down with antiseptic.

Just out of the drs armed with prescriptions for antibiotics and more drugs for after the antibiotics to help me with the effects of those! Oh the joy!

No I dont work in an animal testing lab - after me my boss probably does the most exercise but hes a runner and thinks you have to be mental to ride a bike.

The immume thing I get is actually a dermatological condition and I have to take (topical) steroids for that to keep it in check - but it has required lots of medical appointments this year so it would appear to my boss that I am just 'ill' a lot

And no I dont pick my nose a lot! Or rub my eyes.

Having been the mum of four [s]vectors of disease[/s] children for quite some time I am well versed in preventing bug transmission. However got a cold before december and the bloody thing is still ravaging me

Wash your hands as soon as you get to work and home again. I started doing it and the difference was incredible in terms of not getting ill. All those dirty hands holding rails and things.....horrible!

PS Re-read this and I admit it sounds OCD, but it does work!

In fact thinking about this it sounds far from ocd. When i get to work I usually shower if ive ridden in. Then I was my hands eaach time I make a coffee - as I know ive been sat there coughing into them and blowing my nise, and I also wash my hand when I go to the loo - so twice a day really doesnt sound ocd 🙂

Just after a month I really dont seem to be fighting this one at all. Really unpleasant day yesterday in a meeting in one of our regional offices - my cold decided to go up a gear and I had a day of bloody sinus gunk to add to my chest gunk. Delightful - and sorry for the description but this realy isnt just a lingering cold

I hope the 15 day course of antibiotics will kill the thing as it seems to be getting worse not better

Any top tips on boosting immunity?

How about turn up to an event in January in mid Wales, cough your way from the the car park to sign on, cycle up a great big hill on a loaded bike, sleep in a small wooded area near a reservoir at 500m without a tent and on the floor at below freezing temps. Get up in the morning and cycle back. Drive home for 4 hours.

That's bound to help any recovery from a cough 🙂

Ha ha - shhhhh!!!

I took it very steady anyway (and luckily my two riding partners were too polite to complain at the coughing or the slow pace!)

Anyway my doctor says I dont need to avoid exercise :p

Work outdoors as much as you can if possible. Get away from office environments. I don't remember my last cold, though I have had hospital visits due to genetic eye problems but that can't count surely!

Eat like a maniac, and pile the veg up high on the plate too. Don't neglect meat and carbs too.

Take a rest. Like a 1 month off the bike type of rest.

I did a similar thing to myself about a year ago when I was between jobs, started riding to fill the void, then more and more until I was doing ridiculous (by my standards) weekly mileages and climbs. Got to the point where I felt just amazing doing anything and my back was the best its ever been (thanks to lots of regular time in the gym at the time).

However, if someone in the next town sneezed, Id get a kicking cold that would render me useless for 5 days at a time, when normally I have a bosse immune system (only 1 sick day in 11 years of working + uni). Doc said take a break, I did for 2 weeks, didn't do anything. Tried again for a month and that sorted it, haven't been ill since.
