+ Arsehole
That's the bit that has been missing from some posts - it's not the drink that makes these things happen, it's the arsehole. And arseholes are arseholes with or without alcohol. They won't be remorseful now they are sober, they'll still be laughing about it, thinking they did something great. Because arsehole.
Just had a chat with the builder working next door.
He tells me that the final was a fix, that the score was known beforehand. I didn't manage to get any more from him before he was called away to berate the skinny layabout 'working' with him.
So has anyone else heard this almost-certainly-true theory?
So has anyone else heard this almost-certainly-true theory?
No but that's sensational. Did he mention if Brexit was a fix too?
Now you come to mention it, the similarities with events in America are astounding. A fixed match/election leads to a mob of arseholes trying to break into the home of democracy/football. Makes you think
I'll wear the hairshirt.
We're all sick of it, know of it, have seen it, have lived with it.
Some of us remember BMWs and VWs being trashed in the aftermath of '96.
It's a sickness, but it is highly localised on a pin prick.
In ages past, learned men earnestly debated about how many Angels could dance on the head of a pin.
How many racists dance around the head of this pin?
There will always be more good men than bad, however loud the bad men are.
Sorry for the rhetorical question but Is "Football's coming home" the shittest song ever?
I'm sure that some might argue that the conflation of under achievement and self entitlement is profound in it's aptness to the history of the England football team but it's probably the last thing I'd want to hear if I were kicking a ball around a pitch trying to win a football match.
Can we find a lyric in it that is inappropriate or politically incorrect or something, so that we can cancel it before the next world cup?
Sorry for the rhetorical question but Is “Football’s coming home” the shittest song ever?
"we're on the march with Allys army
Were going to the argentine
And we'll really shake them up
When we win the world cup
'cos scotland are the greatest football team"
Football songs are just carp are they not?
I like alcohol, I try to have a similar relationship to it as my Italian pal. I think of it as like a condiment and should be used sparingly.
I've been drunk plenty in the passed but now I (hopefully) have grown up a bit more. I have never been drunk around my children as I would feel ashamed of myself and wouldn't be setting a good example to them.
I think it speaks volumes about that a fair few of the England players had never even tried alcohol.
This was the first time I've watched England at a tournament and not got emotionally involved and I think I enjoyed it all the more for it. Probably living in Scotland might have helped this too as I wasn't surrounded by all the hype.
I really enjoyed the whole tournament including the England games. Yeah I wanted England to attack more and use some of the talent we have but Southgate did pretty well with the system he set out. Hopefully he can replicate this next year at the world cup.
I have said for a while though that if I was talented enough to play international football then I'd play for one of the other home nations as you get too much sh$t playing for England.
'The journalist Melanie Phillips has labelled the Black Lives Matter movement (and taking the knee) as “anti-Jew” and “deeply antisemitic” during an appearance on the BBC’s Politics Live show.'
That's going to play well.
You mean " the right wing demagogue" Melanie Phillips
Vile woman whos campaign against the liverpool care pathway condemned people to die badly.

Beg to report, it is actually an excellent song. It's a shame the lyrics are such unutterable mawkish tosh, but Ian Broudie is a genius and that song is 24-carat pop gold. Annoyingly. Because I am completely sick of it. 😆

Was saying this the other day. There was a clip aired on the BBC of Shearer being interviewed during Euro96. We had just won - and this was in the context of all the tabloid scandals about the england team being a bunch of boozy ****s (Dentist's Chair and all that) - and he concluded by rather stroppily saying something like "....and I think we're all going to celebrate with a little drink tonight, if that's ok with you? <teenage scowl>"
It was a contrast to all those interviews with Raheem Sterling this year, always just saying "yeah that was a good performance, but we're not going to get carried away - back in training tomorrow to focus on the next match".
But also relied on cheating as one of their most successful tactics – now known as the ‘dark arts’.
Seen this a lot. Well, certainly in a lot of Guardian comments anyway. It's funny how it has become a sort of prevailing narrative, when probably the two most iconic, viral moments in the whole tournament are:

You mean ” the right wing demagogue” Melanie Phillips
Melanie Phillips is basically Katy Hopkins with a library card.
Have we done the England players turning down a reception at Downing Street?

Not heard that one yet, but did wonder that I hadn't heard of one taking place yet

It's absolutely not the prevailing narrative of the media.
While there's plenty about claimed injustices inflicted on England by the 'cheating foreigners', there's little self-analysis or questioning of the English team's reliance on diving and simulation.

I read an article somewhere, maybe the Athletic which basically said Kane & Sterling were denied some pretty clear freekicks in the final as the ref had made up his mind in advance that they had dived their way through the tournament.

I don't buy that - refs are monitored and are relegated from officiating top games if they don't perform to the expected level. And if the ref was dishing out punishment to Kane and Sterling, he'd have had a field day with the Italian team (especially Im/mobile).
It's certainly true that the ref who red carded the Welsh player disappeared soon after. And the Uefa referee chief has said both the Sterling Penalty and the nit-red to Jorginho were correct (although the reasoning was pretty dodgy). I don't know how much the performance at e.g. the Euros would affect the Champions League. Kuipers is 49 though I think, so nearly aged out. Refs look at things a certain way, that'll never change. He did seem determined not to give Kane any free kicks, even though he definitely could have. I'm not sure I buy it as they describe it but I could certainly use it happening.
If only the Queen could withdraw the offer to form a Government based on racist messages in the media

Yeah he let a lot go, but I thought that was to the benefit of the match overall. It's a tricky line to tread but I reckon he got it about right.
