France and Wales. Only because I have then in the sweepstake. Not sure I'll actually watch any Scotland games as experience trumps hope.

The bookies odds are still daft so noes the time to stick some bets on. They’ll change quick once reality hits.

Engerland are favourites which is ludicrous and Harry Kane is favourite as highest scorer. Mental!

I’ve had a punt on either Spain or Portugal to win it. Hopefully we’ll see some decent football.

Going for an Italy win tonight, but not an easy one

If anyone fancies some fantasy football, we’ve got a mini-league going

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/fantasy-hub-football-manager/id445839722

League PIN number is 2684

You’ve got half an hour to put a team together and join

I don't care about Turkey, at least Italy have a bit of romance about them. Does the result of this group have any impact on the home teams?

EDIT this is Wales's group. If we assume Wales aren't going to win the group we want the other contenders for 2nd to lose I suppose?

Great refereeing. He’s having none of it.

For an opening game, this is a belter. Italy looking very un-Italian

Good to see Italy on the front foot for a change! Always solid at the back - they could be a good shout to win the thing.

Don’t forget that Rugby is a far superior game, because............................

Sorry, I must have dozed off halfway through that sentence 🙄

Italy looked really good tonight but Turkey were absolutely awful. It’ll be interesting to see how they do against a decent side

I hope that refereeing sets the tone though. Having none of the shenanigans, letting the game go, and no VAR.

I had Söyüncü in my fantasy football squad as he’s been great at Leicester all season so I now sit at the bottom of our league with a score of -1

Might as well start as I mean to go on

Meh. Thought he was too soft on the snide niggly stuff, didn't seem too worried about players getting nowhere near the ball but clipping the man. Not a big deal in this game but want to see that called when teams with nippy attackers are being neutralised by it. Would be nice if they could find some crews who know the offside rule. The VAR checked a couple of things but it was quick. None of this 5 minute delay while we draw some lines bollocks

Looked a decent game from what I saw of it - two complaints though

1/ Up there ^ good header, good save. GOOD? That save was a worldie, the equivalent of a 30 yard top corner goal. And to someone on one of the previous football threads siding with Souness about why GK shouldn't go with their top hand for that sort of save - that's why, no way he'd have reached it with his left hand. Grrrr Souness.

2/ Italy should always wear Azzurri, other teams should be forced to change. (See also Brazil and Holland). Not that there was a clash anyway, bloody second kit shenanigans.

I know what you mean, and agree in the main but could be a bit two-edged. I don't think anyone likes the 'felt a touch, went down' culture now; conversely there's the flip of if you don't go down you won't get the free kick / penalty. And we want games to flow.

Fact is, these are all strapping muscle bound superathletes who could easily sustain a bit of contact, it's supposed to be a contact sport.

If they know they aren't going to get free kicks for minor brushing of bodies, and don't go down, and so the minor contact is no longer a way of breaking up play would the game be better for it? The only way to stop play would be with the genuine hack down and then they should be penalised fully with cautions and sendings off.

I'm not suggesting that culture can be changed in an instant - players or officiating - but the whole thing is sort of self perpetuating.

Without a heap of good fortune England won't be anywhere near the final, but I wouldn't be too surprised if Kane ended up as top scorer - he's a decent player, and he knows how to score. A couple of easy goals against a weaker nation plus a couple of penalties and he''' be in with a shout.

It would for me but there are a few teams that would probably disappear from tournaments for a while cough *italy* cough.

There were a few of those of ones where there was some shoulder to shoulder but suddenly both of the players feet become nailed to the turf and they go down. How refs are still falling for that, I don't know. So get rid of those please.

If Wales can figure out a way to plug the gaping holes in the midfield, they might have a chance. I'm very glad that Bale went to Spain. His pace has gone but his vision and passing are first rate. I suspect had he stayed in England he would have been used to chase balls over the top and lob it to the big man in the middle. When the speed went he'd have nothing else.

I'm struggling to get involved with it this year - I think it's because of the ridiculous idea of teams like Wales & Switzerland having to travel several thousand miles between games. Dumb anti fan idea.

Surely it shouldn't be left to the team mates to screen the medical team while they are trying to work on him though.

I imagine that the players have got more news than the rest of us, and it is something to be happy about and they are feeling much better.

Still not sure it is the right decision to continue the match tonight, and I don't buy the "players request" line from eufa.

I hope the commentators remember how to do their jobs in the second half, instead of just spouting overly sentimental bollocks for 45mins and turning it into a "death of Diana" moment.

True, it's hard to tread the line between sober and maudlin. There is a bit of a tendency for tv presenters to drape themselves in a cloak of elegaic poetry to show that they are sensitive. Which takes it A bit too far.

Softest penalty I've seen called in a while. Defender pulled out, might have just about scuffed the polish on the little toenail. Denmark very sporting though, nice soft pass to the keeper instead of a proper pen.

So, Trippier playing at left back despite Shaw and Chilwell in the squad, two very good left backs? What’s that all about? Just so Trippier can take corners?! Southgate overthinking it…..

An ‘interesting’ starting line up

I’ve got Shaw in my ff team as I thought he’d be nailed on to start. I’ll keep in my squad for when Southgate brings him on second half when they’re two nil down

Yeah, not sure how Shaw doesn't make the starting line up. And even as a city fan I wouldn't have had Sterling as a starter ahead of Grealish and Rashford, the only logic I can see in that is that Grealish and Rashford could be game changers when/if brought on and I don't think Sterling in current form is (hope he now has a MOM performance and gets a hattrick to prove me wrong).

Chillwell is not fully fit, apparently. Trippier over Shaw is most likely about pinning Croatian wingers back, to isolate Modric. Also Sterling has a tendency to drift inside and Trippier might be seen as a better option to provide width in attack.

Croatia determined it leave their mark on, well, anything that comes within range.

The problem this team has is that when Kane drops deeper and Sterling or Mount of Foden go past, which Croatia is really struggling to stop, there is no real height, so everything has to be in the ground. Easy for Croatia to neutralise.

Tempo dropping, Croatia finding possession and ways into the England half. England have shot their bolt, Croatia survived. Modric to score in 5,4,3.....

Inevitably Croatia will come into it, they're too good a team not to.

As happy as I am that we can now pass the ball and keep possession, (although I'm from the age where it still give me palpitations seeing an England centre back exchanging passes on the edge of the box) with a positive big striker like Kane I think we can be a little reluctant to just cross the ball at times. As the commentator just said, sometimes it's pass for passes sake, working it wide into the final third and then....recycle all the way back to the halfway line, which then creates the situation where Kane has to drop deeper to be involved.

Not every time, just to create some variation.

Ah, so in a more familiar line-up, he'd have expected someone to be anticipating his pass 20 yards beyond the goal-line. Got it.

You can tell who Walker has been playing for - he is playing passes into the forward spaces, his teammates are expecting them to feet.

The Croatian right back is pushing up, Sterling is not going to come back which means Mount or Phillips coming across to double up. That means more room centrally for Modric Karadic? Racatic? Not sure of the spelling bit the very experienced central players

Two excellent sides neutralising each other, Scotland will be chasing shadows.

Mind, Scotland will need to stay in the shadows if the weather stays like this, you'll need to make sunburn substitutes 😉
