I'm speechless by today's excuse.
One of the lads phoned in to say he can't come in as his washing machine has broken down and his uniform is in it, wet.
Yes lad, it's snowed and none of us particularly want to be in, but everyone else is!

Anyone got a better excuse than that?

"I got my arm stuck in the Cornflakes packet".

Did not work when I was late for GCSE French class when I was 15, would not work now.

I once managed a guy who - after spending a week coming to work late already - ask for two paid weeks off in consolation for his pet rabbit that'd died.

Started a new job around a decade ago in December. Used to catch the bus to work.
The buses were not running due to staff not getting to work, so walked home to get the car.
Managed to get halfway before conditions on the road became a little tricky, so pulled in at the train station and caught the train the rest of the way. Then walked for around half a mile in thick snow to get in.
There was 2 of us there ... out of 10 .
People who lived less than half a mile were saying it was too difficult to get in. Pathetic 🙂

What is your school's policy and culture on uniform? I know a few places where children would not dare come in due to an overly strict approach.

The OP's not at a school - theres more than one place where people have to wear uniforms - Hooters for instance.  IIRC he works at Disneyland. If 'one of the lads' is in fact Goofy then its pretty disappointing for the customers if he turns up in his civvies

Disneylands ill-fated 'Dress down friday' policy never really got off the ground

Left to right - Donald Duck, Mickey  Minnie and Elsa.

Someone tried tht at my old work, walking 900 yds into their night shift was too hard in the snow! I got a call to see if I could cover the shift so made my way in on the mountain bike, taking the fun way in. Unfortunately I went through a park where BBC Wales were doing an outside broadcast from and my boss saw it on the telly in the office. He quickly figured out I'd gone a mile out of my way to mess about for a bit so I was greeted with "Did you enjoy that? Didn't think you'd get so far off the ground just coming in!" thankfully with a big grin on his face. He was just glad to be able to go home as without any cover he would have had to stay!

The absentee got disciplined a week later after they had put pictures of themselves on Facebook of them down the pub later that evening 🤣

‘I can’t come in, I’m in a foul mood and I have other stuff to do’

‘I can’t come in, there’s a red warning from the MET office for snow’ (fine, but the warning was for Dundee, our office and employee were in Harrogate)

‘I can’t come in, I can’t get the car out for all the snow’ (again fine, but her boss had walked past her house on his way to work.)

I should say, all these were from the same person. When we finally let her go, her absence rate was 20%…

Once had someone ring in to say he'd be late as he'd trodden in some dog shit and walked into his house so had to clean it up.

At school a lad turned up at about 12pm one Friday with the excuse " sorry I am late sir, I thought it was Saturday ".

I used to cycle 12 miles to work on the MTB in bad snow as it was quicker and safer than driving, then take calls from folk who could frankly have walked in if they weren't bone idle.

Rode back home in a blizzard maybe 10 years ago, gritters were caught out so many roads impassable, no vehicles getting into our village.

"You must be mad riding in this" said a neighbour who was out watching the snow.

I pointed out that I was the only vehicle moving in tbe village.

My sister had a guy who worked for her who was renowned for going on benders, claiming a heart attack was why he'd had a few days off, so she asked him if he'd seen a doctor to which he replied "ah but madam it was only a small heart attack"

I sacked off a solicitor once whose excuses were so poor that she might as well have told me her dog ate her work.

Once when working a night shift in a care home I got a phone call at 2 am.  " I wont be in in the morning - I have D&V"  the thing is I could hear the party in the background.  She was phoning from a house full of drunks!

A lad at school gave the excuse that he got mugged on his way in and they took his woodwork project and his apron, so he was stuffed. He got away with it. Also, when the said work was due to be marked, he got one of the soft lads to give him their work to get marked. He ended up getting a better mark than the lad who did it!
Once had to explain why I was late when at uni in the labs. I was never late so it was noted. I had to explain how I had trusted a fart on my way out the door and ended up having to clean up (shower) as a result, hence the lateness. They admired my honesty...

Did you? Or were you just clever enough to know they would never ask again?

I had a lad ring me at the start of the day to complain about the fact I'd but him on a job that was about a 45 minute drive away (some guys travel over 90 minutes each day daily) and that it won't get done as he had to be back home for his covid jab conveniently booked right in the middle of the day at 1pm.

Asked why he didn't give me a few days warning so we could ensure he was working locally "my mum reminded me this morning".

Bent over backwards to swap some guys between jobs to get him on an easy, less important job with no customer expecting him.

Next thing I know, he's kicked off with the boss as I've not kept him with his best mate. I'm standing my ground on principle, boss rolls over, puts two teams on the less important job, let's down a customer, and just to finish it off the lad comes in the office mid morning to have another whine about it, I didn't think he ever got there so got a full days pay and just drove around wasting diesel until his mummy rang him to check he hadn't forgotten to finish early!!!

No, that is what happened, and they new me well enough by then to know that I was unlikely to be making excuses.

Missus once walked past a colleagues house on the way to work (25 minute walk, even with the snow) then received a call after she'd got the the office saying they couldn't get the car off the drive because of the snow, so could she let the manager know he'd not be in today.

We literally lived 10 doors from him.
He realised about half an hour later and walked to work.

I once had a mate pop round after he'd struggled home from for (took him 3 hours driving in the snow, about 25km!!). Wanting to make sure i was ok (i cycled).

I left an hour or so after him, and had already showered, eaten, washed and hung up my kit and given the bike a quick once over (my brakes frozen on the way down one of the bigger hills on the way home. The big time road cleats make brilliant brakes!).

So i answered the door with a cup of tea in hand and he looked very surprised...

Same, but it was her cat. She's also the first to call me to tell me she can't come in if there's ought but a dusting of snow on the road. One time a colleague picked her up on the way through as he knew she'd have phoned in. She had a face on her all day...it was quite funny.

A friend of mine once pulled a sickie by phoning her boss and saying she had shat herself on the tram on the way to work. It totally worked.

An old maths teacher of ours had a fairly enthusiastic Labrador. Utterly without discipline. Anyhow, the teacher was handing back workbooks to the children and one had a huge piece torn from the corner, bite marks all over etc.

The teacher's excuse:
'I'm sorry James, the dog ate your homework'
