The new David Simon show started this week. Looks like it might be as involving as The Wire.
It looks amazing, recreating early 70s New York beautifully. It's sordid and grubby too. Very.
Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco add some heavyweight star quality. Hopefully one of Franco's characters will shave off his tache or something because once Vincent's scar fades we won't be able to tell them apart.
The Corner was great for weaning you off the wire and while Treme was quite good it never had me eagerly cueing up the next episode. Show Me A Hero was beautifully written and acted but the subject matter was s-o-o-o-o dull I only watched it out of respect.
Recorded, the previews look good. James Franco always watchable.
Not heard of The Corner. Will check it out.
Is it on Sky Atlantic?
Of course.
Another to add to get around to watching. 😐
Could could watch Maggie all day long ... she's lovely
Well you see a lot more of her in this than you normally do....
Just found this piece about Possum - the real life Bubbles from the Wire..

Turns out the hot shots and hats etc were based upon real life events..
The Corner was a mini series based on the David Simon book about the life of a family living in poverty in drug addled West Baltimore.
It was made before The Wire and had a few of the same actors. Pretty bleak but terrific nonetheless.
Of course, you could always go back and watch Homicide Life on the Streets. Doesn't get much better than that.
Cheers for the link joeydeacon. Well worth a read.
🙂
Bah! Just realized those pesky Yanks are a couple of weeks ahead.
Currently downloading episodes 3 and 4.
Generation Kill was superb as well..
Not started on The Deuce yet, waiting to get a few episodes downloaded first so I can watch a few a week if it hooks...
Enjoying the Duece, like the wire there doesn’t seem to be a main single story, but it’s very good.
I've been watching it. Well made, excellent cast, but so far not as gripping as The Wire. Better than 90% of stuff on tv, but the problem with David Simon stuff is I always feel like I'm being lectured by a lefty sociology professor about the evils of the world.
Yes. Enjoying it but it's bloody difficult to hear through the background noise.
What The Deuce?
he problem with David Simon stuff is I always feel like I'm being lectured by a lefty sociology professor about the evils of the world
Surprised to hear this, I think he rarely makes any judgements - just look at hamsterdam in the wire (legalised drug zone) no side comes out as the moral authority.
Geez! Episode 5 packed a lot in!
Great interview with the two creators and back story to the show.

The Deuce is excellent. Snowfall is also shaping up rather well.
