Now this is interesting in a very nerdy way as rumours of this sort of thing have been part of detecting lore for decades. His motive might not fit exactly as there are many reasons an individual might get upto such shenanigans! Money is only one of them. Believe it or not, there are some pretty famous detectorists and with fame comes groupies and TR7's as we all know!
Anyway...
In my club it was humourously referred to as being "a dropper". As in, "nice sceat Dave, you bloody dropper!"😁 Like I said though, it was a genuine bit of banter but in the big monetised clubs (not real clubs, basically PAYG detecting "companies") there were always rumours of fields being salted to get the paying punters in.
Some of these "clubs" also cater exclusively for American metal detecting tourists that sh*t a brick in the US if they find a wheat penny (a hundred years old if you are lucky...) and you see why many American Detectorist refer to the UK as Treasure Island and post good money to access fields over here for detecting holidays.
Anyway, a niche story but it's made a little more interesting if you've ever been in the hobby. 😁
On a more serious note, it can lead to completely erroneous histories for a region/ find and that is my main gripe with this sort of stuff.
All this being said, it's a wonderful, wonderful hobby and I deeply miss my detecting days. You really do meet some amazing characters. "Detectorists" absolutely nailed the wonderfully nerdy weirdness of the hobby and I will always love it for doing so. 😁

I've known people be disappeared just for mentioning the word! Putin has tendrils in many clubs, hell, he plays nicely compared to some! I've witnessed feuds that have lingered for DECADES over someone getting access to someone else's field eons ago. That's no joke, it's like sleeping with a man/woman's partner. You just don't do it.

He actually looks like a guy that was in our club many moons ago. Don't remember much about him other than the fact a new club member took a live WW2 grenade over to him to ID. He was never forgiven for that. Not for putting a life at risk, it ment we couldn't go on that field for the rest of the day. Unforgivable.
That was how our club rolled. You lived and possibly died on the fields.
It was like 'Nam but with a greater tripping hazard as some of the sh*theads didn't fill in their holes.
