Its here...

Part of me says it'll ruin my memories of the books, the other part of me is compelled to watch it...

Very simply the best way to enjoy films based on books is to separate the 2, once you accept they are different it all gets easier 🙂

Yup I find the best way not to ruin a film is by not reading the book.

Looks interesting. Shame they've cast mumbling Matthew.

That looks pretty good - liked the esrly books but that shizzle got way too bloated about halfway through.

Watch Chimes. Yes I had the same resentment when I seen the trailer earlier in the week.

Really want it to be good, but still think it would have been best as a tv series. I've read that the film starts after the book and is Roland's next go round. If that is true I think it's the best way to approach it.

The watch chimes are a cheeky nod to Sergio Leone surely?

Stephen King acknowledges in the introduction to the books that they were directly inspired by the epic quality of the Leone westerns.

It made me smile as soon as I heard them.

Yup. But a shoot out should be a shoot out with guns, like a western.

Can't watch trailers of movies I am actually interested in! Loved the books and only "found" after a thread on here. Read them back to back. First Stephen King I ever read, thought is was brilliant.

On the same trend, and im not the only one, i rsther imagined Roland as an older Clint from those movies. It remaims to be see if Idris Elba can capture Rolands character. I say that as an Idris Elba fan.

Idris is a phenomenal actor and I hope he does the role justice. My only gripe is that he's too handsome and doesn't look old and haggard enough for the Gunslinger I imagined. I'll be able to overlook that if the film is good and he brings the character to life.

Have to admit, I'm hoping it's good, just to annoy everyone who's losing their shit over what's probably the first blackwashing in cinema history... And changing the plot takes out the only real issue with it (Detta) but tbf I hated literally everything about that character so screw it. Like practically everyone else, "my" Roland looks like Clint but I think he might pull it off... McConaughey looks perfect

I get why fans want "their" Dark Tower but personally? I think it's a great idea, but the series is so weighed down with bloat and outright terribleness, and it'd be unfilmable even if keeping the original content was a good idea.

If they can keep the heart of it and get rid of about half of the plot points and never ever mention the word commola, then they might do OK. But I'm not liking that Jake seems to be inspiring Roland to go to the Tower, that's really offpiste. And I feel like the action should be rooted in reality- Roland's not got any superpowers, he can jump off a balcony and shoot people in mid air but he's going to regret it when he lands...

(the gunplay looks ace- the midair reloads are a bit much but the other reload tricks are cool, and someone's really obsessed about the sandalwood guns.)

Last thing, it feels like the studio's lost faith in it and a lot of people have already decided to hate it, so it's going to have a rough time.

While I kind of agree with the sentiment, it's difficult with books written ten, twenty, thirty or more years before the film was made.
Although, I've only ever read one Stephen King story, and that's Firestarter, and I don't think I've actually seen the film of that.
This looks interesting I might give it a try.

Drew Barrymore played the girl, not seen it for years and and I was about 13 so watched any old crap.

I've read none of the authors books, so I think I'm going to enjoy this. It has one of my all time favourite actors in, and my least favourite too 😆

I'm getting worried that it's going to be crap. Trailers make it look a bit like Underworld or Resident Evil with all the silly jumping and reloading out of the air. Really hope I'm wrong and it's just how the trailers are edited.

To be fair, Wizards and Glass added sod all and everything after that was mostly shite, I only read the last two to get to the end. You can tell he wasn't taking any time over it and was just banging out any old nonsense. Second only to the Hunger Games as Dark Tower actually had a plot and character development.

Having read all of the Stephen King horrors avidly as a teen, I somehow missed out on the Dark Tower. Film looks promising though.

Is it just me or is McConaughey slowly turning into Christopher Walken?

this is not a movie based on the books.

Its an actual sequel to the books so starts after the end of the last book

WillH I would definitely make the time to read them, there are endless references to his other stories which having read basically all of them I really enjoyed. I am seriously looking forward to the film but it appears I'm in a minority who enjoyed the whole series... Maybe I'm a bit of a fanboy?

Nope, I loved all the books too. Then again I think King is a brilliant character and world builder. Have you read The Wind Through The Keyhole?

I'm reserving judgement on the film though, it looks a bit dubious from the trailers.

I've missed this book too. Film looks worth a watch.

Watched "Free state of Jones" the other night and thought he looked a lot like Christian Bale 😕

Oh no

I just watched the trailer that Drac posted. Seems as though Roland might be the next modern day movie superhero.

Hmmm/. I want the mystery and fantasy of the books.

They have tried to squish 8 books into 95 mins. It was never going to be pretty. should have committed to a trilogy or something.

Sooo, i'm planning to go and see this tonight, its scoring poorly in the reviews, will i be disappointed? (i read most of the books, but gave up when i couldn't remember what was going on!). Also, taking my 11 year old son to see it, whats the worst bits in it for an 11 year old not exposed to any 12A before?

My son really liked it, I'd give it 3/5, it can't contend with the sheer size and depth of the books.

You gotta wonder why, with such an epic story they chose to try and do it in one film, surely it was worth a number of episodes.

And, WHY, on a 90 min film, do the trailers go on for 40 bloody minutes!!!! (and they left the lights on!!!!).

Let me guess: Cineworld?

Hitman's Bodyguard - definitely not my sort of film, but really enjoyed it.
