‘One of the things that’s very important is that we draw a line under everything that’s happened over the last fourteen years.’
Oh ok.
As a lifetime Labour voter I’d have preferred any of the other three quarter finalists to win. I can see Badenoch taking Stanmer to pieces every time they debate.<br style="box-sizing: border-box; --tw-border-spacing-x: 0; --tw-border-spacing-y: 0; --tw-translate-x: 0; --tw-translate-y: 0; --tw-rotate: 0; --tw-skew-x: 0; --tw-skew-y: 0; --tw-scale-x: 1; --tw-scale-y: 1; --tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; --tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; --tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; --tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246/0.5); --tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000;" />She seems smart (comparatively, you understand). Stanmer’s approval ratings are dismal, and if that continues it will make Badenoch seem succesful.
Others here seem very confident, me not so much. I can see her leading the Tories into the next election, and I can see her winning.
Red Wall type Labour voter?
For me she fits the word "condescending" to the T, and she'll be exposed during PMQ's.
Reading the room well there Kemi
This is what will undo her. She has absolutely zero empathy. She simply can't imagine what it is like to be anyone but her. She will continue to put her foot in it as she has done so many times already - maternity pay, imprisoning civil servants, Partygate...
....we need more austerity...
The next Parliamentary race will be to see who gets the boot first, Starmer or Badenoch
Labour will take a long time to ditch Starmer; he has delivered them into power and is handing out decent pay rises to his union backers.
yeah Starmer has his faults but pitting him vs Badenoch doesn’t really seem a fair fight!
This is what will undo her.
She sees herself as the new Thatcher, a dispruptor sent to break up the old boys network and crack heads together. I'm not sure it'll work though, it's far more likely that she'll piss off her MPs and be booted out within a couple of years.
Labour will take a long time to ditch Starmer
Starmer won't be ditched, he'll go the same way as Blair, probably midway through a second term. It all depends on how much of his majority he can hang on to at the next election.
If we're going to make this another... "Labour must ditch Starmer" thread... I'd say all eyes need to be on which regional mayors stand to be MPs at the next general election... that's where the next leader comes from, IMHO, rather than someone currently a senior MP. No point changing leader without a major policy step change to go with it, which would be hard for anyone working closely in/with the government over the next 7 or so ******* difficult years.
‘One of the things that’s very important is that we draw a line under everything that’s happened over the last fourteen years.’
Yes, Kemi. Great.
But what does that actually mean?
Ah, yes. Kemi doesn't actually do meaning, does she? Or policies. Or practicalities. Just claps her hands in the face of nonplussed minions and says "make it happen".
If there are still questions...
She claps her hands in the face of nonplussed minions and says "make it happen" but slightly more like David Brent.
New shadow cabinet is looking a little like Monsters INC.
BBC seem to think Priti Patel will be Shadow Foreign Secretary. The same Priti Patel who was sacked by Teresa May as the real Foreign Secretary for going off message on Israel. What could go wrong this time.....
There are so few Tory MPs left that when those standing down and those clearly disloyal to the current right wing junta are taken out there are not many choices for Ms Badenoch to make.
I mean there are 120 ministerial positions in the Labour Govt and 121 Tory MPs in total......I wouldn't be surprised if she gives Patel the Home Office as well
So, to summarise..::
The woman sacked for freelancing on foreign policy while foreign secretary is appointed shadow foreign secretary?
The man referred to by everyone sarcastically as ‘honest Bob’ as he’s so bent is now shadow justice secretary?
Laura Trott who looks like she’d struggle with her times tables is now shadow education Secretary
It’s absolute comedy gold!
They’ll need to be restocking the champagne supplies in Labour Party headquarters. It’s been party time on Kemi for the last few days. Maybe they could send one of Borises old number 10 staffers with a suitcase?
@winston The stats are horrific, there's a 20% chance of any Tory MP being appointed to a meaningful position (shadow minister/secretry of state) the rest are guaranteed bag-carrier positions (PPS or similar). The LoO has precious little talent and less to choose from too.

I find that ^^ slightly encouraging. Chris Philp is my MP and I heard him speak publicly a couple of times. I see him as a useless and ineffective but highly ambitious politician.
But I can't see him being in anyway of the same calibre as former home secretaries Priti Patel and Suella Braverman when it comes to culture war.
Which begs the question is Kemi Badenoch going to put less emphasis than Rishi Sunak in chasing the Reform UK vote?
I think Badenoch is just working with what shes got, which isnt much, I see shes already angry about Jenricks role being leaked, the like of downden, barclay , cleverly, tugenhadt (wasnt he supposed to geta cabinet role?) all sitting it out on the backbenches is a sign they plan to make a leadership play later in the term, when/if Badenoch is taken down
The big guns are out. Human pot-plant Helen Whately is shadow minister for work and pensions ?
There are about 150 government positions from Secretary of State down to pps. And 120 conservatives. Assume a third want. Nothing to do with a shadow government. Hence the limited talent pool.
Any half decent Tory will be wanting a seat on a select committee where there is an opportunity for some form of proper governance.
But you think that even out of a limited talent pool Kemi Badenoch would have found a more rabid and effective right-wing shadow home secretary than Chris Philp!
I would expect the shadow Tory home secretary to be absolutely central to any culture war the Tories might want to engage in.
Is this really a reflection that there aren't sufficient bigoted right-wingers of Patel and Braverman calibre in the current Parliamentary Conservative Party, or maybe a sign that Badenoch might want to ease off the Johnson-Sunak culture war shite?
I honestly don't know the answer to that question. Although I am certain that the Tories will always lose if they want to play Reform UK at their game. Perhaps Badenoch is smart enough to understand that, something which Sunak appeared too stupid to.
Any half decent Tory will be wanting a seat on a select committee where there is an opportunity for some form of proper governance.
A very good point. There is going to be a real shortage of Conservatives for select committee work.
I honestly don’t know the answer to that question. Although I am certain that the Tories will always lose if they want to play Reform UK at their game
There has been absolutely nothing whatsoever that has come out of any of the Tories mouths during this leadership contest to suggest they intend to do anything other than try to compete with Farage for the racist headcase vote.
Even Mel Stride was making (somewhat unconvincing) noises about leaving the ECHR. They’ve as good as flagged up to the Lib Dems that they’re welcome to the 59 seats they took off them at the last election and that there will be plenty more where they came from
she has absolutely zero empathy
See also Trump, Johnson, Truss, Musk, Vennells....
Private school education encourages absolute confidence in self, with zero empathy for anyone else, especially those from "lower classes." How can you be empathic toward someone from another world?
So few MPs also means only 18 (15%) need to put in letters for no confidence vote. Badenoch will be at the mercy of the headbangers.
Badenoch will be at the mercy of the headbangers.
Badenoch won't be at the mercy of the headbangers, she is the headbanger general. Just like of the previous leaders have not been at the mercy of the headbangers, they have lead the party from the front in exactly the direction they wanted to take. Even May has tried to rewrite history after the fact, she was never the voice of reason in the party until after her leadership stint she decided to pretend she was.
It gives them far too much credit and excuses their obvious failings to keep repeating the myth that they are somehow victims in leadership.
So few MPs also means only 18 (15%) need to put in letters for no confidence vote. Badenoch will be at the mercy of the headbangers.
they have changed the rules to 30% of MPs precisely for this reason
So few MPs also means only 18 (15%) need to put in letters for no confidence vote. Badenoch will be at the mercy of the headbangers.
They've increased it to 33% so there's a much higher chance that Badenoch will be around at the next election. She doesn't seem like the resigning-for-the-good-of-the-party type.
I hope youve all got your anti side-splitting corsets on........
Mark Francois has been made shadow defense secretary
I don’t believe you.
Mark Francois has been made shadow defense secretary
I've just checked and can't see it on the BBC?
The HIGNFY writers must be frothing themselves senseless with these opportunities!
On the Beeb they were saying that there are 120 Labour ministers.
There are 121 Tory MP's in total... so basically, if you can just about hold a pen you'll get made a shadow minister of something! Lol 😀
Imagine being the one MP that doesn't! Haha!
A few tory MPs have said they do not want a post so some are going to have to double up.

They might take that literally. It's the Tory way.
spoiler. He’s not

it would have been very funny though.
Double post.
Shadow Secretary of State for Education
Laura Trott
Conservative
After her amazing explanation of inflation in that infamous interview, putting her in charge of education is an interesting choice.
After her amazing explanation of inflation in that infamous interview, putting her in charge of anything is an interesting choice.
FTFY
They're going to need a very robust meeting room for shadow cabinet meetings. That much vacuum in a confined space willl lead to the room imploding like a titanium submarine!
To be fair, just putting Laura Trott and Helen Whately in the same room together could form a critical mass of stupid. Throw Chris Philp into the mix too and you’re at thermonuclear levels of cluelessness
To be fair, just putting Laura Trott and Helen Whately in the same room
For some reason I had conflated this pair of aces into one superdunce. Presumably on the basis that I'd never seen them in the same room for safety reasons.
Honestly, there is no beginning to their talent
Let’s take a moment to appreciate the full majesty of Mick Lynch telling the now shadow Home Secretary exactly what he is…
For some reason I had conflated this pair of aces into one superdunce. Presumably on the basis that I’d never seen them in the same room for safety reasons.
Was going to say exactly the same. I’d confused Trott for Whately this morning. Philip is the answer to a question nobody asked.
Dear lord, she’s a walking cliche. A bad Gordon Gecko tribute act. She’s just done an interview with the Spectator where she seems to have said nothing of any consequence other than her weird take on lunch. Steak delivered to your desk anyone?
Does she break for lunch? ‘What’s a lunch break? Lunch is for wimps. I have food brought in and I work and eat at the same time. There’s no time… Sometimes I will get a steak… I’m not a sandwich person, I don’t think sandwiches are a real food, it’s what you have for breakfast.’ Soggy bread is a no-no: ‘I will not touch bread if it’s moist.’
That really talks to the common person among us - I mean be honest who here doesn't get a steak bought to them every lunch?
The common person doesn’t get to eat “real food”.
Presumably this is all made up to appeal to the kind of bloke who still laughs at vegetarians.
And the type of Tory who thinks allowing people to have a lunch break is tantamount to communism.
Kemi actually seems to be getting worse at PMQ’s, week on week. She used all 6 of her questions this week to talk about immigration. Farage must have been laughing his tits off. Once again he’s wagging the Tory dog as they just slavishly follow his agenda. She may as well have been wearing a t-shirt with ‘vote Reform’ emblazoned on it
