My lad is reading it at school (Year 6) and picked up the DVD from a charity shop the other day. Me and him are watching it this afternoon whilst the youngest is out.

Obviously, given the subject matter, it is going to be horrific, but I'm worried what he will make of it.

Anyone else watched it with their kids?

My son did it school at the same age and thought it was really good. Not an easy story, but very well done. The school must think they are old enough to cope with it.

I thought it would be ok when the happy ending came along.

Watched it with my lad many years ago.. it’s quite gently done, so not too traumatic

It's a weird film. The reader primarily identifies with the Nazi's kid as the protagonist (so the Jewish kid is othered), and the "sad ending" is that the Nazi kid and his mate are gassed, rather than just the Jewish kids being gassed. Maybe the book is different but I'd prefer other books to be assigned to my kid.

It’s quite a heavy film for a 6 year old...!!

”Wonder” is a good film for kids. My lads school did it & had a trip to the cinema etc. It has some quite thought provoking moments that my lads identified with.

He's 11 or 12.

My daughter read it at school and found it quite interesting. We've not seen the film yet.

He's 11.

Silence from him. I got a bit choked up.

The two lads in the film were excellent.

+1.

I found it distasteful and more than a little manipulative to be inventing stuff like this about a place where so many real people died horribly. There are more than enough heart-rending stories from the camps.

I thought it was excellent in that a film that is fairly accessible to children / young teenagers there were no winners and that war is shit rather than the usual good guys win despite some hardship and there’s no mention of the millions of lives lost by the bad guys. If it was just factually correct it would be a documentary.
