The new Amazon advert shows a dad who has been left on his own with the baby. Daddy daycare as the saying goes. His wife leaves all patronising reminders on the Alexa to help him because he's a man with a baby. And then says oh I love you on the Alexa.

Does anyone think if the tables were turned there would be uproar? If the woman was working on the car or doing some DIY and the man had left reminders on the alexa. There would be a feminist journalist arguing with piers Morgan on good morning Britain faster than you could blink.

Does anybody honestly care either way? Not meant to be blunt but advertisers have been doing this for years. With the internet age and the plethora of social media platforms it seems that everyone has to be offended by something all the time to keep things going. It’s getting a tad sad and ridiculous.

Not directed at you OP, just the general culture of people looking to be offended by something at every opportunity. It’s really quite saddening

To answer your question, unfortunately I think you are 100% correct.

I'm more offended by the Royal Navy one with the bike cranks at a jaunty angle.

Yup, terrible in this day and age, but we are blokes, we won't be moaning about it as it does really register on the DILLIGAF scale.

I know few dad's that are useless with childcare, I know many who are very good at it and a few who are much better than the mum.

Not nearly as annoying as any advert with that involves ****ing whistling.

There are feminists for a reason. There aren't maleists*. Have a think why, then have another go at being offended.

(*sorry, forgot about certain STWers for a mo there, but they aren't real people)

Not seen that one but yes the subject that others companies take in adverts that Dads are crap at looking after kids annoys. "Mums you're doing Ok"

"Dad you can't even change a happy"

Yeah **** off.

Edit: Ok that one isn't to bad would have been handy for me as I forgot loads crap like dates and times, plus where my Mrs stores stuff is pretty random too.

Funny, the vast majority of female feminists I know get wound up by this shit just as much as we do.

Go look up 'toxic masculinity' then have another go.

Yup, the "looking after kids is alien and new to dads" approach should make any feminist, or just any parent at all, sigh and want to avoid your poorly marketed product. It's 2018 for glob's sake.

Just the latest in the ongoing infantilisation of men programme.

No 'maleists'?

Equality for Men

Men going their own way

Men's Rights Movement

Red Pill

Father's for justice

The list goes on.  Men being seen as expendable and males as toxic is endemic in society.  Double standards abound.

Although arguably it is women that are infantiled more and divorced from responsibilities.  Just look at how they receive less jail time for the same crimes as men.  The government are even talking of not sending them to prison at all:

Okay sorry, if it wasn't clear it was the we complaining about it I was referring to.

Anyway I'm sorry feminism bores you so much, I'm sure there's a car thread elsewhere waiting for your usual worthwhile input.

If only we lived in a world where men held some of the power we could stop all this right now. Back to burning our boxers then.

It’s blatant sexism but the reason more isn’t made out of it is because men are less prone to worry about these sorts of things.

It's sexist yes, but realistic. Which doesn't make it non sexist.

Do.yoi actually see the woman? Maybe it's two blokes? Should have made it like that to be both non-sexist and progressive at the same time.

No, it's just trying to re-balance things after years of western and male dominance.

Realistic on the sense that it's probably happening across the country every day.

Doesn't mean we need adverts reinforcing it though.

No, it’s just trying to re-balance things after years of western and male dominance.

The problem with that though is that you victimise subsequent generations who don't share the same values. Why should anyone be on the receiving end of predjudice because of something their parents did (and parents' parents etc), or values they held, and with which they don't agree?

I quite often apply the test (can't remember the name) where you swap man/woman in a sentence or statement to see whether it would be of become offensive and I'm often disappointed…

Here is the little uncomfortable truth, when you have all the power you have to give some up....

I know! I often get a really funny joke in mind but don't want to be judged for being sexist or racist etc. If I do decide to say it anyway I'll try to be ironic but that doesn't always help.

So, the ASA are bringing in a new rule soon -  https://www.asa.org.uk/news/new-rule-to-ban-harmful-gender-stereotypes-next-year.html

So, if you are offended or worried about the harm caused by such things, you can complain to ASA to get a ruling.

I was actually offended by squirrelking's incorrect assumption or, more likely, lack of comprehension, which caused him to come to the conclusion that I am uninterested in feminism and interested in cars. Quite ironic really that.

Your life has to be pretty empty if you're (pretending to be) offended by harmless stuff like that.

I'm offended that people are watching adverts on tele? I rarely watch commercial tv and, if I do, the adverts are there for making another coffee or a trip to the bog. I didn't realise people actually watch them.

Tell Alexa. Unless if you are a bloke up to your armpits in nappies or a chick who is too daft to use new tech.

Only that hardly does balance things out.... especially where/when it matters the most.

Most family practice solicitors will tell you that they can pretty much guarantee custody of kids to a mother for example ... so long as they are capable of repeating what they are told to say.  (Actual numbers are not available)

It's just one example ... but one where the outcomes don't really work out due to a preconception that father's are somehow incapable/incompetent and courts would rather award domicile to the mother who promises to get drug counselling etc. than the father.

Much less immediate impact but it's amusing that whenever I end up making fancy dress costumes for jnr's school stuff my OH gets complimented on her sewing... Jnr has never had any other way than I do all the sewing.. but school now seem to be making him feel there is something 'wrong' with that

DezB, did you actually read the link I provided or do you just like to talk a good game? If you think this has nothing to do with feminism then you frankly don't know much. And I never said you were interested in cars, that was your own incorrect assumption or, more likely, lack of comprehension.

No, it’s just trying to re-balance things after years of western and male dominance.

Actually no, all it does is reinforce shitty stereotypes that are no better than the shit that gets slung at women.

Your life has to be pretty empty if you’re (pretending to be) offended by harmless stuff like that.

Are you aware there is generally a sliding scale for this sort of thing? As it stands it's waaaay down my list of things to be offended by but it's problematic nonetheless. But pretending? No.

Tonight my wife asked if I needed a hand changing my daughters nappy. My daughter is a wriggler and had a very interesting nappy. I just yelled at my wife for being sexist and then burst in to tears because I was so badly offended.

Some of the above may not be true and / or be embellished to add extra drama. It’s an advert for a talking speaker and probably meant to be light hearted. The fact that anyone can be even remotely offended by it boggles my mind.

OK, well, your comprehension is clearly lacking. Why would I follow a link from someone so... well you know.

You know nothing about me, so don't attempt to estimate my character from a few lines of text.

And.. what funkmasterp said.

Does that work both ways?

If you had any interest in discussing this rather than your usual soapbox pish you would have read the link and seen exactly what I am comprehending.

Anyway, I'm sure you have more pressing matters to concern yourself with, I'm sure some goats will be along shortly...
