Thanks to redundancy I'm in a position to retire & today is the day 🙂

I have been looking forward to escaping the corporate jungle, after 31 years in flour milling I will miss the technical aspect of the job and most of my work colleagues who are also taking redundancy.
But I'm looking forward to having time to really do things without the nagging thought of lots to do once back at work.
Sadly like TJ I arrive at this point having lost my wife nearly 3 years ago, having lost all my family apart from my sister I really intend to make the most of it.
It's been an emotional roller-coaster of a day as we shut the site up for good today, 2 colleagues both have over 46 years service one having started the week after his 16th birthday.
We worked out that including myself 4 of us have a combined service of 151 years!!
Now starts my next journey.

Well done you!

I keep trying to fully retire: just about to send what is, I hope, my last customer invoice.

Beware the procrastination monster! Things seem to take a lot longer to do nowadays and those YouTube videos seem suddenly interesting.

Good luck, very jealous, made redundant 3 times in 5 years, not once even been there long enough to get any redundancy money!

Enjoy it and ride your bike... lots

Thanks people, I don't intend to be bored Klunk as I have lots of hobbies I could never devote the time to and I have a lot of travelling to do seeing friends all over the place.

For some reason the thread about my wife's passing isn't showing in my thread profile?

I make no apologies for linking it again https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/im-in-need-of-some-support-from-you-lot-sad-content-im-afraid/

Retirement should be refreshing after flour milling.

Just wake up and do what you like instead of the daily grind.

Good luck and enjoy it, only thing I’d say is look at how to stay active, be that a hobby, part time job, volunteering or whatever, one thing I note from folk who’ve retired recently is that it has aged them when they have nothing to do and all day to do it!

This.

This thread makes me happy and sad at the same time for various reasons.

And that.

Bastard

But mostly painfully jealous.

My work is going though a cull and I'm sorely tempted (disillusioned with ways things are going in my space) to see what packages are offered. Highly unlikely I can make it work at my age, but very happy to see such a deserving dude able to make the most of your situation.

But again:

Bastard

Congrats, nice to retire pre dotage. Sounds like you've worked hard for it and it's not been an easy road.
I calculated I'll be able to retire at 91.
You're not Windy Miller BTW?

Us lot made it with all parts attached, I've worked with a few that have missing digits/limbs and dust explosions claimed a fair few but not in our industry since 1966.

Who knows what the effects of dust exposure will be.

I wasn't a miller but a flour mill engineer, ironically our mill was the newest most efficient and automated in the group. It was the crumbling buildings/silos that required around £6 million spending that was our demise.

Well so far day 1 has been fine, even have a bike ready for an evening ride and felt no pangs of guilt at not going to work.

There is little chance of me being bored as I realise how much I've let things slip and want to attend to.

The best thing was I sat out in the garden with a coffee and just watched the birds going about their day, I felt so relaxed that I actually burst out laughing 🙂

I think I need to follow my sisters example of yoga and meditation (she is a member on here on a walking trip to Harris at the moment)

Belated congratulations! Hey, now you'll have to read all the forum comments, so it doesn't matter that I'm late.

Ride your bike, visit friends, be the annoying and cheerful one... That should keep you busy for a while. And pop in if you're ever down my part of the world. 🙂

Well IIRC you are in the Pyrenees? So apart from Swiss, Dutch & Norwegian members of the family the area you live holds many happy memories of helping my father geological mapping in the area, plus we have another member in the area that needs a visit

Congrats N!, I had that lumpy cheque but after a year off, I jumped back in the job market, chose a firm that's fun to work.

Waves at you in the garden from the other bank of the river.

To keep the grey matter working I've started on a MSc, oh and slowly building up a bike packing setup once my legs are back working properly again.

Oddly I got the letter a few days ago asking me that my pension would be starting, I remember the day laughing with the pension advisor when I signed the original paperwork.

I er won’t be taking retirement quite yet 🙂 ,as I only ran it for a few years before moving onto company ones,it’s a shock thou seeing it in black and white.

Lovely mind set.

Sad news on your wife.

Have fun writing down all the things you wanted to do but never got around to. Even if you don't complete all the things on the list it'll be cathartic to get it all out.

Good luck, and I hope you share some of your adventures on here.

Buggery bollox I typed a whole load of stuff on here and Its gone 🙁

First ride I had a wardrobe malfunction and had to stay seated!

Thanks to those that know me for sensible words, thanks to that don't know me for silly words 🙂

Going through all sorts of emotions trying to make a house we lived in for 26 years a little less cluttered, the pictures are the hardest.
