Mrs Binners, who’s as northern as it’s possible to be, has got her ‘big coat’ out for walking down to the pub for the footy in a bit
I’m also swapping my flat cap for a woolly hat
Shits getting real, yo

Winter is coming*
* unless you’re from Newcastle and thus completely immune from anything above -45
I can't believe that it's taken me until right now to connect "winter" and "Jon SNOW". Four fox hake.

Soft, southern, shandy-drinking... 😜😜😂

Shakes head in disappointment 😢🤣
Errmmm - winter does not start until the midwinter solstice. 3 weeks away yet 🙂
winter does not start until the mid winter solstice
Hmmm...
I think you’ll find that winter starts when ‘The Big Coat’ has to come out
It’s effing freezing out there!
Rumour has it simonbarnes still sleeps with his window open in an icebath.
winter does not start until the winter solstice.
Meteorological winter starts on 1st Dec and ends on 28th Feb, astronomical minter starts Dec 22nd (ish) and finishes March 21st (ish). So to keep winter short it's best to start it astronomically and finish it meteorologically.
5degrees today felt like the north Pole 😆 🤣 😂
The met office app was telling me it’s been 4 degrees here today. It bloody hasn’t! That sounds positively tropical compared to what it’s felt like in all this ‘orrible fog
We’ve had cold fog literally all day. Hasn’t cleared even slightly - felt freezing although only 4 degrees
Reet. Get telt tha lotta yas. Real winter is when Geordies purra jumper on...
Edit: and I'm only pretending. In my defence I've been indoctrinated since the age of 2 & 3/4 so I reckon I qualify. 🤔🤣
It was a beautiful sunny day in Edinburgh.
Good point scotroutes. "scratches head"
It got real for a few people this morning on the road over the Hill south of Burnley. Was around freezing, frost on the grass and the council hadn't gritted. One car 30 yards into field, another reversing off the verge and numerous other scars on the grass banks as I crawled past very gingerly. The one in the field looked like it may have rolled. 4 youths probably on their way to college were stood next to it sheepishly so I'm guessing they all got out OK.
Today started gloriously sunny and frosty. I then saw the gloom seeping in from the south. It's grim out there. But only chilly, not cold.

Where abouts Jon? I'm up at Pike Hill. It's taters.
It wasn't that cold here I am still wearing summer spd shoes and survived a 30 mile road ride with slightly chilled toes. I am southern by birth but not by inclination.
astronomical minter starts Dec 22nd (ish)
Reminds me of this:
Rumour has it simonbarnes still sleeps with his window open in an icebath
simonfbarnes sleeps with the fishes, he passed away a couple of years ago
simondbarnes probably sleeps under a very thick duvet so he doesn't have to use the heating, but i make no guarantees
It's true!
It was a beautiful sunny day in Edinburgh.
It may have been, but there was ice on the ground on my way to work and it was beginning to ice up again at 4pm. And that was down in Leith. Still people swimming in the sea, in their bathing suits as the Sun came up though 😳🥶🥶
BTW binners " as northern as can be"? Hmmmm - hundred odd miles of England to the north of you let alone scotland. many of us would see you lot as southerners
You never know
She may have moved down south from wick or Thurso teej
BTW binners ” as northern as can be”?
It's a rebellious state of mind, not just a geographical thing
Beautiful sunny day in Sheffield, until about 10am when the freezing fog rolled in... So I'm claiming that as the official start of winter for me
She may have moved down south from wick or Thurso teej
In which case it'd be the height of summer... #justsaying
Darn serf (of Watford) it hit winter as soon as it went below 15.
BTW binners ” as northern as can be”?
Well you’ve met her. Wigans finest export. I dare you to call her a southerner to her face 😂
I’ve been wearing both the big coat and the thick sleeveless thing over the top… indoors. Would take it all off to go the pub because… a packed pub is always warm… and beer blankets install themselves very quickly in there.
I'm still walking the dog, in a T shirt.
(whilst wearing a dry robe)
Still in shorts here, a balmy 6°c and foggy all day here
Aye, big coat indeed.
Sun's out, guns out for Mostafa.

Hew man, the lasses doon the Bigg Market’ll be oot on Frida neet in the mini skorts & a skanty top. Nee botha.
Tits oot!
I’m still walking the dog, in a T shirt.
It's probly cruel making a dog wear a T shirt. What was on it so we can pass propa judgement?
Still shorts for dog walking at half six this morning (south Yorkshire)
While I might wear something warmish on top, I’m still wearing shorts, mainly because I work indoors now, and it’s more comfortable wearing shorts because I’m using one of those little adjustable stools on castors that beauticians and tattooists use when I’m working along the sides of cars, and standing for other things, not having trousers binding around my knees is just nicer. For those occasions when I go outside, I just don’t notice a bit of chill.
I’ll see how long I can manage when I’m not at work… 😎
I have deployed the 10 tog duvet
I've travelled south to "the north" and its cold.
Still not winter though
It's not officially cold in our house until the tog 4.5 quilt is fastened to the tog 9 quilt to make "super quilt"
Haven't even had to scrape the car's windows once yet so definitely not anywhere near winter here. My Facebook keeps on reminding me of my rides in Sub-Zero temps this time over multiple years (one was at Brechfa and it never got above -5 in bright sunshine!) so it's definitely unseasonably warm. Only switched the heating on last week as it was taking my washing too long to dry naturally!

Don't think we've ever done that, we just one as 'summer duvet' and the thicker one as 'winter duvet'.
We rarely do it. You can almost guarantee that as soon as you clip them together and shoehorn them back in the quilt cover it'll warm up.
The bad winters of 2009-2011 it got used a lot
❄️💨⛄
I had one of those "this time last year" reminders on Google Photos the other day of heavy snow in the Peak District in late November.
So this is positively mild by comparison.
Most people live in towns and cities in the UK. If you live in a rural or an elevated location it is usually much colder in winter
Guy Harvey eloquently stated this in "Courting the Squall" song...
"In the hills it's an overcoat colder"
Thanks Essel,I have never seen that Vic and Bob clip 😆 🤣 😂
Had a long walk out the woods last night when a puncture refused to repair, there was a bit of crunchy frost, but it still felt more damp/humid than anything else, didntneed a 'big'jacket.
I don't think we will get a hard winter of any sort*,those days are gone.
So now that I have jinxed the next 3 months of weather,I will revisit this thread in February 😉 😜

You’ve gone and done it now, haven’t you?
I shall inform the Daily Express that you’ve just ushered in the Arctic Blast/Beast from the East/Snowmageddon and that we’re all going to die
We had our first attempt at a frost the night before last. I’ve needed to be scraped off cars, but it wasn’t anywhere else
I cut the grass on Sunday as it’s growing still
ive just looked at BBC forecast for our area and it says there is a flicker of a chance of a snowflake in 2 weeks time 😄
Haven’t even had to scrape the car’s windows once yet so definitely not anywhere near winter here.
I've had to dig mine out of the snow once already this year. Admittedly my own fault, i should have checked how deep/wet/solid the snow on the drive was before i got the car out of the garage rather than after i'd stranded it in the snow...
Unfortunately, it's almost all melted now and back up to 2 degrees outside.
I shall inform the Daily Express that you’ve just ushered in the Arctic Blast/Beast from the East/Snowmageddon and that we’re all going to die
Well this is guaranteed to happen anyway as, just like when we did have the BfE, once again I'm off up to Glasgow for 3 weeks with work on Sunday. 😳
a bit south of Glasgow, in the South Lanarkshire heights 🙂 A gorgeous sunny morning, with a light frost. Current outside temp showing as 1.5 degrees. Was lovely at 0630 dog walk, peaceful and a bit of light mist
But all the yummy mummies and kid footy dads have been wearing their Canada Goose jackets for months. I admit that is has been a rather chilly 9 degrees at times 🙄 (the kids they're taking to school or watching play football are in shorts yet they're dressed for the artic 😊)
Minus 8c overnight here. Still 0c at the moment and I'm just about to head out on the bike.
^^^ bawbag... 🙂

I was surprised as well, forgotten all about the snow this time last year.
It first came down during the NDCXL CX race at Markeaton Park, proper covering for the later afternoon races.🤣

Take comfort from it being cold. #shrinkage

I'm sure I saw a newspaper with a "Beast from the East" headline on the front page when I popped to the co-op yesterday
the kids they’re
taking to school orwatching play football are in shorts yet they’re dressed for the artic
That's because when standing on the edge of an exposed pitch for 2+ hours and not moving around much even the slightest breeze becomes absolutely freezing! Been there, done that, glad he lost interest and I don't have to drive halfway across the county on a Sunday to freeze my arse off in a field.

My 15 year old daughter started coming with me to watch rugby last season and was a little puzzled by my insistence on her putting extra layers on. She complained during the 20 minute walk about being far too warm and sweaty. And then at some point in the second half started borrowing the gloves and hat that I'd secreted in my pockets ready for that moment. Regulars on the terraces know these things.
I'm talking about under tens football where they only play 20 minutes each way. But I can imagine watching an 11 a side match in January/February ain't gonna be fun.
Distinctly chilly at home today, but I'm home alone, dialling in to a day long series of presentations keeping warm under the duvet.
But I can imagine watching an 11 a side match in January/February ain’t gonna be fun.
And its always on some quagmire of a pitch in the arse-end of nowhere in Salford.
My boy also races CX so more standing in a muddy field in winter for me 😜
Darn serf (of Watford)
Which Watford? Watford in Hertforshire is 50 miles south of Watford in Northamptonshire.
Bloody taters on the lunchtime dog walk.
Feels colder than the temperature 'cos of the biting wind that's come in.
Another lovely day here in Sunny leith. 🙂
It's the relative humidity that makes it feel colder and more miserable than it actually is. I feel far more comfortable in minus 3 and dry than 4 degrees with drizzle.
Bloody taters on the lunchtime dog walk.
You took some bleeding potatoes with you on your dog walk? You put tomato sauce on your chips on your dog walk? You saw some East European cars on your dog walk? Are your subtitles working correctly?
Its the dream combination of cold, wet and windy, isn't it?
Its like living in some kind of Dickensian dystopia here. Theres just a constant (bloody freezing) fog engulfing everything
Its like living in some kind of Dickensian dystopia here
It's been worse than that here, it's been like Lancashire.
Look east and you can see the faint glimmer of sunlight in the sky, but it never gets closer, it just taunts you like the bowl of crisps you're not allowed to touch before the inlaws arrive and you remain trapped in the permanent semi dark grey wetness of a Manchester day, consoled only by the firm knowledge its better than Preston.
the bowl of crisps you’re not allowed to touch before the inlaws arrive
The suburban hell of a 70s sitcom starring Ronnie Corbett?
But all the yummy mummies and kid footy dads have been wearing their Canada Goose jackets for months
In my view the 'jokes' about being tougher up north are more related to the fact that you can physiologically get more used to being in the cold. In my experience, working with thousands of teachers a year, we see more and more people who go from warm heated house, to warm heated car, to warm heated work place, to warm heated supermarket...
My team who are out most days barely feel the cold some days, both through good kit and this physiological change, good sleep, good food etc.
So yes, I too often see Himalayan levels of goose down on the high street - but some people genuinely seem to need it these days. 🙁

You need to move north to sunny leith then. Been a lovely day here you soft southerner 😉

There are also people who are either just cold all the time regardless of temp, or others who like to feel toasty warm all the time (my sister-in-law). The most annoying ones I call Goldilocks as they have a narrow band of 25.87 - 26.13 deg C where they're happy and thankfully quiet. Below that they're in Arctic exploration gear and above it they keep shouting how they are melting 🤦♂️
Nearly all of these people don't actually move around apart from walking from house to car to office/pub/shops etc.
TJ - I hope we're not going to have you doing a Keef Richards and falling out of a coconut tree on the beach in your tropical paradise 😉
I fell out of my tree years ago! 😉

Beautiful.
With family who now live in Newton-le-Willows (don't let the name fool you, it sits between Warrington and St Helens, devoid of any redeeming features and half built on toxic glass industry spoil heaps), I have experienced this first-hand.
With family who now live in Newton-le-Willows
Are you related to Rick Astley?
I went to school in Newton-Le-Willows and Rick Astley was in the year above me. My mates brother was in a band with him prior to his solo career
True story
Matts description of the place is actually quite generous
Big coat came out yesterday for me in the midlands (but I'm from south london).
Locals are still in shorts.
I hope the "levelling up" we are promised also applies to clothing standards.
