I've always been a user of than, as in 'cheaper than CRC' (for example). However I've noticed a lot of 'thats' creeping into text over a period of time.

Which is correct? And where have the 'thats' come from - predictive text, spellchecking, Americanisms?

Yours,
More confused that ever.

Saying "cheaper than" is better than saying "cheaper that". Mainly by dint of it being correct.

Never come across that before, but I can't see it being anything other than a mistake. Dyslexia / damn you, autocorrect / English as a second language / illiterate halfwit etc.

It's not just that it's correct, it's that the other is patent nonsense. You might as well use "sponge"; I bought some pedals from Wiggle the other day, they were cheaper sponge Chain Reaction.

Wiggle aren't usually cheaper sponge chain reaction in my experience.

"cheaper that" doesn't scan at all. Bad typing?

I thought the question was about Tarquin enquiring whether one was portly or waif-like. Nothing about sponge although too much Victoria may make one That.

Its writterned in that sacred text, STW, in a piece on the Home page no less:

After two laps he came into the arena with none other that Rob 4real Friel of XCracer.com who was leading the mixed pairs with Caroline Vance

and frequently in various other notable publications, too many to mention now, that have come to my attention.

So surely not sloppy journalism then 😉
