Except that they would have been completely fine with that, because racism wasn’t thought to be a bad thing. I was born in the 50s (just) and I can remember – it was entirely normal and acceptable for while people to be racist.

That's a very good point. My old nan being a case in point. She would say things that would make a millenial's skin crawl. I won't repeat them. But knowing her, they didn't seem to sit with how she felt, it was just kind of, I don't know, how she said things... I mean she would say the most incredibly racist things in the way she would describe people, but then in the next sentence go on about how she loved 'all' black people because one helped her when she got lost as a little girl.
To roll back from the bickering.....
It's an odd old story. No one is stupid enough to place them in the bar without being able to appreciate the message they are portraying. I'm guessing it was a 'beacon' to the like minded and a sign you are not welcome to the snowflake, the 'woke' and those of ethnic minority heritage. Did they think it was not going to bite them eventually? Maybe in stupid town they thought they were being ever so clever and subtle - it wasn't a "no blacks, not Irish" sign after all - no actual words.
Anyway, **** em. Capitalism filled the ethics void and basically cancelled them. And while we're at it, **** the bar staff too. No need to feel sorry for them as was the sentiment above - you don't rock up to work at a pub with gollywogs hung up by their necks and a landlord with a penchant for a BF T-shirt without knowing what you're part of. And while we're at it, **** the regulars the place was 'styled' to attract, or at the very least were not put off.
Most locals pubs reflect the society around them – I’d be pretty sure the owners know their potential clients and the type of landlord they needed to keep them happy.
The brothers who took over the pub I now drink at knew exactly who their potential customers would be, which is why they had two security guards on the door, one of them a local who knew all the dodgy characters by sight, and had also fitted discrete cameras in all of the drink booths they’d fitted throughout the pub.
Worked very well, too, no more need for security.
The source, long gone I fear. But an interesting read if you can find it.
Well.
She would say things that would make a millenial’s skin crawl.
You know that some "Millennials" are in their 40s and grandparents now, right?

So. Totally. This.
Does anyone care to speculate about the probable voting patterns in recent years of the ownership, staff and clientele?
As a last thought - wouldn't it be great if the place was now turned into a loud and proud gay pub? Full rainbow paint job on the outside etc. As Kevin Keegan once said, "I would love it, love it".

Well I'm 38 (nowhere near being a grandparent mind) and my wife's granny doesn't half come out with some amazing things that would make me uncomfortable if I was out in public with her. Last I was with her she kept trying to cram Meghan Markle into every conversation which ticked both the closet racist AND fanatical royalist boxes.
Yeah, my mother does that, so is probably fitting nicely into that bracket. Amazing how she was pro-Harry when he was a nice young officer and then anti-Harry when he went public against his family.
She also voted for Brexit. Makes you think.
Talking of saying racist things. This was turned up by a reporter in Oklahoma a few days ago who put a voice-activated recorder in the parish council's office after the normal public council meeting:
“If it was back in the day, when Alan Marston would take a damn Black guy and whoop their ass and throw him in the cell, I’d run for ****ing sheriff,” he said on the recording.
“Yeah, it’s not like that no more,” Clardy lamented, before Jennings continued: “Take them down to Mud Creek and hang them up with a damn rope. But you can’t do that any more. They got more rights than we got.”
Earlier in the recording they talk about killing the reporter.

this sums it up
Id also add **** Braverman for supporting them
If you are used to privilege, equality feels like oppression.

A s##thole estate pub near where I grew up, oft frequented by those of a right-wing persuasion (and a fair few Enoch worshippers), closed due to lack of use and was turned into a mosque.
It's now very busy, thank you very much. The gob-shite NF & BF contingent faded away as they realised it was no longer the 1950s and they were unwelcome in the 21stC.

I don't understand why the landlady claims now to be "totally and utterly gutted" by the fallout.
She made it clear last month that she didn't care about the fallout and invited people who didn't share her love of golliwogs not to do business with her when she said, "If they don't like it, they don't have to come through the door."
So Heineken and Carlsberg have decided not to do business with her, sounds perfectly reasonable to me. I have no idea why she's whining - surely it's called 'choice'?

I understand - it's because she's full of shit and an idiot.
Hope that's cleared it up for you.
My nearest pub in Pudsey use to be a dump, full of nasty people. Then a new couple brought it, gave it a good clean and sold good beer, all the w@nk3ers didn't bother coming anymore.
I was telling this story at work one day and someone said that Nick Griffin held a talk there many years ago too:(
So yeah it's great to see another out of date business close down.
