I didn't have any of the Gorilla glue I used last time to glue the cork to the bottom of the coaster. Not an issue I thought, simply use superglue it and put some weight on it to make sure it sticks.

The tile is stuck firmly to the cork. 🙂

The tile and the cork is stuck firmly to the Ikea plastic coated cardboard desk top. 🙁

Any suggestions for removing this without destroying the desk top?

I've got to admit, I'm simultaneously relieved and disappointed

Good effort. I am relieved there are no body parts involved.

Get some liquid glue dissolver/sticky stuff remover and let it soak in. Lots of different types available.

Make it a feature and call it bludtyle, then you could send it to be included in the Ikea or Death competition ... Win 🙂

your challenge is to find a solvent which dissolved the glue substantially quicker than it dissolves the plastic coating on the table. To be honest of things which dissolve cyanoacrylate (superglue) the least aggressive is likely to be acetone - if that destroys the table you are probably ****ed. I'd probably suggest using ordinary nail varnish remover (which is not pure acetone) in the hope its gentle enough on the plastic. Otherwise - is it in a good place for a permanent coaster?

I have a little tube of that but not sure I can get it to squeeze underneath the whole tile.

Warm soapy water is supposed to dissolve superglue. The challenge is to get it to penetrate under the impermeable tile. Maybe place warm wet towel over the whole thing, then pick out the cork around the perimeter, and repeat.

Slightly (? - just remembered who I'm advising) more risky is a sharp knife to slice the cork horizontally, so that you can life the tile and attack the cork directly.

Hot water...it'll soften the glue and allow you to lift it...probably sensible to built a wee barricade around it so the hot water doesn't pour everywhere and scald you.

No need for a video on you doing that though...

Do the rest of the table surface in a cork finish.

Do the rest of the table surface in a cork finish.

Is the correct answer.

Coke. Random viewing recently had a child with eye lids glued together with super glue. The air ambulance tried this as they had seen it done in hospital.

Break up the tile and let your magic liquid seep through. It's coming off in pieces anyway.

Have you got one of those angle grinder chain saw blades - a 'light' pass over the top may remove it? 🙂

What could possibly go wrong?

Use wallpaper scraper to separate the tile from the cork, so only the cork is attached to the desk top. Flamethrower for the cork part still stuck to the desk.

What could possibly go wrong?

Cut a nice hole in that bit to sink an ink well.

Just glue a coffee mug to the coaster. Then, when a refreshing beverage is needed, merely fill it to the brim with the appropriate hot drink.

To simplify future drinking, embark now on an intensive weightlifting course. In a few months time, this will help assist with lifting the table to your lips for a quick cuppa.

Unhelpful suggestion number 22: tile the desk, it will give you a nice hardwearing surface.

Hammer and a sharp chisel.
Edit.
OP. Get a friend to do it for you.

Can you get under the edges at all? If yes, a carbon fibre (as in small teeth to cut CFRP) hacksaw blade will cut the Superglue very efficiently. Cut the pin ends from the blade, tape the table to prevent further damage, heat the mat/cork and gently cut away until it comes off. Then apply some acetone to whatever is left and/or gently sand it. Even with this, you're still likely to have a mark(s) on it.

Put on some sharp shoes.
Get a set of step ladders.
Stand on the table and boot the edge of the tile.

What could possibly go wrong? 🙂

When removing protestors who are glued to things, the police usually use wd40 first. Seems to do the trick most of the time…

get some Bob Smith UN-Cure super glue remover or similar and try some on an invisible part of desk to see if it affects the finish.
Or put a bead of mig weld on it and bash it off with an axe .. maybe.

Dental floss (stay with me...) use it like cheese wire, held flat to the table. Cut the cork off then some nail varnish remover to clean up any residue. Other strong string like substances are available.

Don't use real cheese wire because, well, it is you.

Heat the tile with (say) a domestic iron until the glue between it and the cork softens, then prise the tile off.

Scrape cork off the desk & remove the remaining glue with acetone / nail varnish remover.

Hard to see you’ll get that off without damaging the desktop, but you could just cover it with a vinyl wrap.

Also while we’re on glues I’ve recently discovered the joy of 3M 1300, or 1300L. If you REALLY want to stick something that stuff is the mutts nuts..

If it were me I'd work down through the cork- slice through initially with a pallet knife or similar then nibble the cork away bit by bit. The only saving grace of superglue is that it's brittle so it can often be chipped off a hard surface without harm- though, the cork will add hassle I expect.

Though it does make me think of my grandad's great advice, "if you can't fix a ruined bit, ruin all the rest so that at least it looks the same". Getting back to the original finish without scratches and marks will be bloody hard but getting it reasonable and then doing the entire table surface even if just with a quick sand or similar could be a whole lot easier.

I like the electric guitar - looks like the out takes from one of my Are you Bored Enough videos.

One thing he didn't cover is getting 240V when in a confined space like, just for example, squeezed through a gap made by removing 2 breeze blocks with your upper body underneath a raised pond while wiring in a replacement pump when your wife turns the power back on because she thought the garage fuse box had tripped on its own.

Violent thrashing about is very painful when holding copper pipe, pump and hose in a space too small to be able to drop or throw away the cables really tingles until your wife walks out of the garage and sees your legs sticking out of a wall and kicking the air madly, returns to the garage and flicks the trip again.

Patience, the OP is currently at the planning stage. It will all come together as a glorious success or the best catastrophe ever seen. I have the feeling that it will not be carried out by half measures.

Slight anti-climax I am afraid.

I used a 4 inch wide razor blade in a paint scraper with a 12" long handle. Slid the razor smoothly along the surface of the desk until it hit the side of the tile and swiftly levered it up. I expected the tile to snap but it just popped up taking a couple of small sections of the desk top plastic with it.

The remaining coasters were left on greaseproof paper while the glue dried and were all fine.

^^ There was absolutely no minor cuts or injuries? At all?

No way this ended with such minimal violence.😉

Edit: How do you intend to cover the marks left on the table top? This could prove crucial to the thread and your well being.

Possibly something to do with distilling hydrochloric acid using a blow torch and using the vapours to evaporate a sacrificial plastic fitting then condensing the plastic laden acid vapour onto the desk top surface by dripping liquid nitrogen over the damaged areas.

Seems the most obvious and easiest way to me.
