Is being sentenced for treason today..
whilst I’m no psychiatrist, I’m struggling to see how there is any debate whether he’s a nut job or not.
he had a relationship with an AI girlfriend, was inspired by star wars, and when initially challenged when arrested on what he was up to his calm response of ‘im here to kill the queen’ doesn’t sound like rational behavior to me..
short of rocking up with his underpants on his head and 2 pencils up his nose, what exactly do you need to do to be deemed ‘mentally unstable’ in a court of law..?

Paging about a third of the forum... 🙂
Treason seems a bit steep though. Up until 1998 you could still get the death penalty for it!
Well he's been in Broadmoor for a while so probably a good chance he'll receive a hospital order.

You missed a bit - by repeatedly saying "wibble" of course!
Sentenced to 9 years in prison. To be held where he is currently Broadmoor, and moved to general prison if his condition improves.
Seems a bit steep. Yes to be in a psychiatric prison hospital, but moved to a general jail seems a bit much.
So, gave himself up before he did the deed. Psychotically hallucinatory and very ill. Thought he was a sith lord. And he goes down for treason, which shouldn't be on the books - it should be attempted murder like anyone else.
Shame he didn't make it tbh.

why? if he's mentally stable then he's just taking up a hospital bed when he should be in prison?
I've nursed 47/49 section patients, which is jail to hospital order with restrictions, and they generally never go back to jail, as they always think up a reason not to be sent back, no matter how well they present

Because if he was psychotically hallucinatory unwell he wasn't guilty of premeditated crime. He needs help to be better.
UK law has an insanity defence. He's clearly insane.
Well, it did have an insanity defence. Last time someone shot at a king they found him not guilty by verdict of insanity. So we re-arrested him, then parliament drafted a special law to bang him up indefinitely anyway.
Shame he didn’t make it tbh.
Surely treason is only a crime if you fail. If you succeed then you become monarch?
Part of his rationale was revenge for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
I don't know much about colonial times, apart from it not being our finest hour, years..but now I know more about this particular event.
Wouldn't justify an assassination a century on though.

I can recommend The Patient Assassin: A True Tale of Massacre, Revenge, and India's Quest for Independence for a good read about an assassination arising from that massacre.
“What you in for dude?”
“Treason”
“Cool!”
🤣🤣
It's very hard to be found not guilty by reason of insanity. You either have to be so off your hard that you don't even know what you're doing, or you know what you're doing but don't know that it's legally wrong. This is a good summary:

It's always going to be a difficult discussion. But this guy is clearly out of his tree, and his problem is obviously a mental rather than criminal one. I can believe he is a danger to himself or others and needs to be held someone secure - but "fixing" this should be a job for the health system and not the criminal justice system.

This is something I could get right behind. We should write it into law.
Imagine the turnover of monarchs we'd have! And the public holiday boosts for the funerals!
Gotta be worth it for the entertainment value alone.

i think technically it would perhaps by conspiracy to murder rather than attempted murder (without pulling the trigger). I suspect the sentence for going to a school or government building and planning to kill the head teacher etc would be similar.
Most serious criminal offences are committed by people who actually seem less calm or rational than his reported actions on the day! The judge found he was sane when he first started planning it, albeit he became progressively less so. I’m comfortable that the judge will have had multiple psychiatric reports to help him decide how the law applied in his specific case and the options for sentencing.
whilst I am definitely not a monarchist - I don’t want them removed by force, and any partially effective attempt to do so probably reinforces/entrenches royalists.

This guy acted on his own, didn't he? You can't have a one man conspiracy - you need other people.
Him wandering around with the balaclava and crossbow with the intention of murder can properly be tried as attempted murder. Buying the balaclava and crossbow couldn't.
