You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
This has been bugging me since Saturday. Tootling along in the van early sat morning, I come across a 1 series bimmer in the outside lane of the a38, I think, they'll pull over in a sec when they see the big silver van coming up on the inside lane. On we go for another mile still slightly behind, no response,
So I move level and there she is head down phone in lap texting away completely oblivious to everything.
At this point should I have run her off the road for being such a ****!!!!
You should have liked her tweet.
You make it sound like it is a one off. I must pass at least 3-5 people on my commute texting. In the past, I have peered in through the window to see what they are texting. I have also tooted them when alongside them - they jump and I hope this makes them realise that they were totally unaware of what they were doing. I also had someone who was on the wrong side of the road and she jumped so high she threw her phone against the windscreen. I have also used a contact us form when the company has a logo on their vehicle.
I did contact the police to see if they want copies of my helmet cam videos but they are not interested. It is mostly women I see texting - I hope they don't think I am tooting them because I think they look good!
Drove alongside a lass with her iPad resting on the steering wheel on the M62 last year.
I let her overtake again and gave a call to the rozzers, who took the various particulars and asked whether I'd like to prosecute, or be happy that they'd be visiting her to 'ave a word.
So, can't accuse W.Yorks police of not taking it seriously when brought to their attention!
(5 mins later at end of call, she was still on it)
hand + horn ?
Drive past and stay in front of that idiot.
I just use Siri or pull over safely in a car park.
Pretty selfish to juggle other people's lives.
It is mostly women I see texting
I'm glad you said that I completely agree, it seems to be at epidemic proportions! I do see a fair few blokes doing it but mainly they're too busy taking on their phones to text whilst driving!
Edit: to answer your question, bap your horn at her and tell/gesture to her to keep her eyes on the road!
^ My perception is more even overall but more female offenders at rush hour. notice men more in the middle of the day.
Cereal eating from a bowl (admittedly much less common) is however exclusively female based on observations of 2 people over the last year.
Had one this morning, 1 series BMW as well. Swerved into the cycle lane that I was in, looked in through the window and she's happily typing away on her phone. 😡
I was on the motorbike on the M3 a year or two back and it's rammed. You can see a LOT more from a bike than drivers think you can... I was filtering an ahead of me I see a car drifting about a bit in it's lane. The traffic was doing about 10mph then stopped and as I pulled alongside I see a woman engrossed in her phone, which she was holding low in her lap. I stopped right next to her and she didn't notice. The window was open about 1/3 of the way so I shouted as loud as I could "GET OFF THE ****ING PHONE!!" about a foot from her ear. She absolutely shat herself, and jumped so hard the phone literally flipped in the air and rattled down between the seats.
I went on my way......
tried that a few times while I've been walking or cycling. Drivers just give you abuse back, no one has ever looked guilty or apologetic, they just brazen it out."GET OFF THE ****ING PHONE!!"
But yeah that biker in the above link does it the right way, no swearing no intimidation, just explaining. I've tried that for close passes and people who've pulled out on me, difficult to do with post-nearmiss adrenaline but managed it. Mostly they just respond "so what, I didn't hit you"
But with texting they know they're wrong so *** em, expletive filled aggression it is.
Nothing, I do it a lot myself
My kids play a game when travelling in the car, they look out for drivers on the phone, wind down the windows and shout as loud as the can "they're on the phone " whilst pointing at the car. I don't mind as it keeps them amused!
Naff all, you're not the police, unless you are the police, but then you wouldn't be writing about it on here, unless your boss doesn't recognise your crime stopping abilities and you're looking for an outlet for all that pent up anger.
I am replying to this while driv....ooaaammmagheerrddddd
My mate was knocked off his motorbike by a woman, and then run over by her. He died at the scene while the emergency services tried to work out how to get her car off him. There was a half finished text on her phone and she had opened one 2 minutes earlier. She got a 12 month suspended sentence and banned for 12 months. He was 57 and left a wife 3 kids and numerous grandkids.
