Had a health check today and my blood pressure came up a bit high. Not that worried because I've had it tested a fair but recently and it's always been spot on.

However, doc suggested buying a home blood pressure tester, which has got me thinking. Maybe it's a bit like scales - check it periodically and I can see if something changed, might incentivise me to think twice before having a fryup etc...

On the other had I really don't want to accumulate more "stuff" around the house.

What does STW think?

I have one, seems as accurate as the docs and they often ask me to use it and record the results.

However, doc suggested buying a home blood pressure tester,

Surprised at that. given a random machine would not give them results that they have steady data info for.

This was my best friend after a farcical medical at work suggested I had High BP

My doc recommended I get one after a couple of high results as he thought they were probably high due to "white coat syndrome". He was right because checking at home it's back on the money. I do mine every 3 or 4 months just to keep an eye on it.

Due to a heart condition I'm supposed to check mine regularly and recently bought a machine from Boots. Like others above it seems to give readings very similar to what I get at the doctors.

144/90 is considered too high these days and my GP would be putting you on tablet (as I am for similar readings).
Unless I’m missing something!

My GP uses the same machine be as I’ve got - the big advantage of home testing is that it eliminates the white coat syndrome. But, some GP’s say that high bp, regardless of it cause is bad which I tend to agree with.

yep text mine a couple of times a week and keep a log.  seems I'm generally around the 125/65 Mark.  slightly worse than I'd like so I'm off salt and have one coffee a day now...

@Rockhopper I had to wear that for 24hrs and the data downloaded and the dr discussed the results with me. Readings went up and down during the day/night end result was I have nothing to be concerned about.

When mine is measured at the doc it's through the roof - white coat syndrome. When I'm at home it's normal. I even checked by taking my monitor with me to the doc's office and checking it gives the same reading as his. So for me, yes, it's worth it. Even though it mostly sits on top of the bathroom cabinet.

Yes, I'd use it more as a long term verification that the pressure isn't changing significantly rather than trusting individual readings though (assuming you've already had an 'ok' from the docs)

If you're interested I think I have one for sale, can't remember if I sold it or not.  Brand new, £25? email in profile and I could send details tonight.

I was around 140/90 for years, always regarded as borderline for medication. Now down to 125/80, lower stress life mainly as currently doing buggar all excersize 😐 . I do take Montmerency Cherry Juice.

As for home monitor I found mine very unreliable so now use free one in GP’s surgery. Even that can vary quite a bit ... its not hard to think of something stressful ad boost the numbers up. As posted above I have the “white coat” syndrome, having my pressure taken makes me stressed.

does that mean your BP is not 144/90? What did it go up and down to?

Got an Ormeron M3 Comfort. Good.  Mine kept coming up high at the doctors. Ended up having to wear a 24 hour one. High during the day at work, then when sat and relaxing in the evening, really good normal, then quite low overnight.  Average was fine.

Work isn't good for you !
