Thought I'd add that to the title- he is getting on a bit.

Anyway has anyone ever turned over A Rainbow in Curved Air and listened to Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band twice?
For me Rainbow.. and Persian Surgery Dervishes are great- the latter is playing now - but apart from In C now and again I really can't get on with much of the rest of his work.

I took part in a performance of In C earlier this year. A big tick for me.

Sometime an experimenter is only successful a few times. That’s how I feel about Riley (and Reich and others). But we need experimenters to move music on, and he helped do that.

I've been organising a remote recording of In C during lockdown! Mainly 'pop band' instrumentation....if anyone would like to contribute a part then please drop me a message!

In C is all I have.

I do like that minimalist stuff. Riley I find a it hit or miss (like John Cage)

Have you tried Gavin Bryers Jesus Blood?

I prefer Reich. 4 organs and 6 Marimbas esp.

Pärt, Adams, Tavener, plus them Bang on a Can folks (esp Michael Gordon: industry and Weather), Gorecki.... but, really, Arvo Pärt, I have a lot of Pärt... he’s getting on a bit as well now I think on it...

Music For Airports (Bang on a Can) has a great accompanying film In the Ocean (used to be on YouTube) a documentary of minimalist music.

I Love Bang On A Can!

Jesus Blood was one of the set works for one of my modules on my first degree.

I'm currently working on Electric Counterpoint..... recording the backing myself too.....it's a monster task!

Electric Counterpoint is one of my favourites, I’ve listened to it often, for decades. Bought it by mistake, as it came with Different Trains, which I tired of very quickly.

This is the film I was talking about. Well worth a worth (or 2). BOAC well represented.

To my shame I’m not familiar with Electric Counterpoint (New York, yes, BOAC do it with 4 organs). But as I have the Phases retrospective I’ve chucked it on 🤪

I've got that recording Kelvin.

I'd say Different Trains is one of, if not my favourite pieces by Reich.

I actually saw Steve Reich perform Clapping Music at the RNCM several years ago.

It must be a great piece to be part of. 👌

Nice to see I’m not the only one listening to this part of the music spectrum. Then again it is STW.

About 5 years ago, i went to a music recital in the local high school - my friend is the head of music there. A group of kids who all played the guitar, helped out by another music teacher, played electric counterpoint. I had never heard it before, but instantly recognized it as the sample used by the Orb, for little fluffy clouds!

I cant say i recognize many of the other names in this thread, but i will be checking them out later! cheers!

One of my faves...

Like a bit of semi-improv, minimalist stuff.
Was lucky to support/play with Damo Suzuki a few years back. That was fun 😄

Would love to have seen Can in their pomp.

Indeed.

I saw him at Truckfest about 4 years ago and interviewed him for the paper. I was a tad awestruck.

Not sure about some bits but Reich and Riley are definitely worth a crack.

La Mont Young is - ah, interesting.

The point I found my limit was John Cages HPSCHD.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HPSCHD

My copy came with a unique printout of tone settings that varied over time for the stereo amplifier that I could use to make my replaying of it my own performance.

Edit: Just checked the wiki bit and found that printout was called KNOBS. 😁
