You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Has anyone here ever found anyone that will insure a U.S. resident with US licence on a van in the UK on a temporary basis? We can’t find anyone and the combination of my arm being in a sling and train strikes might just drive us crazy/ruin the summer.
I know it's crazy when you have your own van, but rental must be an (occasional)option?
An American pal of mine is insured as a named on his wife's car with Admiral. He'll get taken off when he gets his UK license but even if you don't do that it'd be much cheaper than temporary cover.
It's, unusually, much easier in the States - when I visit the in laws I can drive their cars no problem because it's the car itself that's insured.
Adrian Flux and Sterling (esp) are the companies recommended to Aussies and Kiwis to use over here for vans if they're not swapping out licences. Admiral and Post Office have also been mentioned.
Have you tried Adrian Flux? They do various specialist policies via lots of underwriters.
Adrian flux are usualy quite good at insuring 'non standard' scenarios... give them a ring, they will probably have to call you back after speaking to underwriters with a firm quote.
Other option is to just hire a van which you can probably do quite easily as a 'tourist' on the existing US licence, that might well work out more expensive though, as van hire ain't cheap and it comes with lots of caveats.
Wouldn't hurt to call Enterprise just to ask, I found them brilliant when moving house, I ordered a medium size van and ended up with a huge brand new LWB tranny!
I used to find it easy to get insured on my dad’s policy coming to the uk and borrowing a car from him but last year it was a royal pita. Ended up using http://safelyinsured.co.uk/
I can’t remember if I used my uk licence or Australian but might be worth trying. IIRC it was around 100 GBP for a month.
Try Keith Michaels insurance, they were the only one I could get cover with when in a similar situation.
Thanks folks, a few extra options there for us. Sterling don’t appear keen to do vans. Australians are different because they’re commonwealth licences. God save the kind, and my summer… 🙄 Hire car seems like a very expensive option but might be the only way 😞 Frustrating when we finally have a vehicle to drive around in!
God save the kind,
Lol, is that deliberate??
I dunno, my wife took a year to get a UK license and she was insured on my car the whole time. But she wasn't a temporary visitor. I seem to remember putting my father in law on my insurance for two weeks for something like a tenner, but I can't remember who it was with.
Was your other half ever in the US military? If so USAA may be of use. I’ve got legacy rights with USAA and have car insurance both in the UK and the USA.
I presume you've not just tried adding him permanently to your own insurance? The temporary nature of the insurance will probably be the main reason you're having no luck but being a van really won't help either. Try looking for normal yearly policies and check their cancelation terms.

Are 2 specialists i can think of that would be worth a try
I have to have specialist van insurance and they wouldn’t add him when I insured it. Will try a few of the suggestions up there, thanks.
God save the kind is a screen induced typo, it has broken bits on the right hand side of the screen and so I can’t see the errors there. Between that and the left handed typing it feels like i should do some sort of poetry performance art!
Adrian Flux ftw! Forum to the rescue again. Well done folks!
Won't his US insurance cover it?
I've put several random visitors on the Defender insurance when they've visited - it's insured as a Van with Admiral. Key things, I was adding them as a named driver to exisiting insurance, and it was as a permanent thing - then just removed them when they didn't need to use it.
