I'm due to move into a new house and in an effort to keep the costs down. As I use Netflix and have Eurosport player I only really need freeview and Broadband.

Anyone else do it?

How much do you pay for Broadband?

Do I need a phone line?

There is an existing sky dish..

25 ISH a month fibre to cabinet.

Wouldn't have a TV if it wasn't for other half.

No phone line. We have Freesat in our caravan as there's not terrestrial signal. Just uses a 10 year old Sky box with a freesat viewing card. No DVR functionality though as that requires a Sky+ subscription although you can get Freesat DVR boxes.

If you're getting some variation of DSL which is the vast majority of services in the UK then yes absolutely, that's how it's presented.

If it's in your area then Virgin and... someone else, I can't remember offhand, do cable broadband which is separate from the phone line.

BT are now (finally) rolling out relatively affordable FTTP (fibre to the premises) which is, uh, fibre so doesn't need a phone line. But they've got a catchment area of about six houses.

Buy a telly with built in freesat and use the dish. You'll need a phone line for broadband unless you go for something like 4g broadband. I pay about £22 for phone line & fibre broadband from plusnet.

Just bought a new TV for the kitchen/snug as now the kids are all in lockdown university there's only the two of us and it makes more sense to live in one big room (with a stove) rather than spread throughout a biggish house.
Only existing TV (with Sky) is in the lounge but we won't be using it much.

New TV does Freeview and Freesat and can pause/record onto an attached USB drive - not as slick as Sky but should do the job.

Check the mobile reception, it might be cheaper to stick a Three unlimited calls/text/data sim card in a mobile data router for under £20pcm.

What do you watch?

We have Freesat plugged into an old Sky dish - but now we never watch anything that way (The only thing I did watch was Match of the Day, but that's on iplayer now). Who watches live TV these days?

Everything else is cast from the phone / laptop using Google Cast.

This are the best SIM option I've found. I was about to jump ship from being an O2 customer for 20+ years until lockdown hit and I suddenly needed considerably less data.

Virgin let you have BB with no phone line, but the package discounts mean it's often to cheaper to get TV/BB/phone than just BB by itself.

We use an old Sky dish into the satellite tuner built in to the TV. Live is 95% Cbeebies, most of what we watch is on the catch-up streaming services.

Currently pay Vodafone £20 a month, discounted because I have mobile phone with them, for phone line and VDSL (get about 65mb down / 15mb up). It's fine.

was looking at this for my lad, whose wifi where he is wasnt up to scratch. i contacted three and explained that he wanted unlimited data, and asked whether the router would be faster than his three sim card.
nope they said, same speeds, and it was cheaper to upgrade his contract from £8pm (4Gb) to £18pm (unlimited) than go for the router option. (obviously no choice if you dont have a three sim in the first place.)
i was sceptical but he says he can stream far better now, no problems. so for a tenner, hes now got unlimited data and a fast enough speed to stream.

i think thats the way we'll go when our virgin contract comes up for renewal in a couple of months.

It's either Three or EE, I can't remember so I'd have to look it up. It's in their FAQ on the website somewhere.

That;s a flawed argument while the catch up services insist on showing you ad breaks. I'd rather be able to record stuff I want to watch and then skip the ads when I watch it. Also if you watch C4, then they're still not giving Freesat the HD channels that you can get on Freeview.

SMARTY uses the 3(three) Network, outside of Virgin then your going to be predominately using some variation on BT's infrastructure so have to have phoneline bundled in whether you want it or not.

If you live in one of the big cities there is a good chance you can get t'internet from Hyperoptic as well(bit like Virgin using fibreoptics so no phone req).

As others have said there is the option of home 4G but it does depend on mobi signals in your area, you can fit a external 4G mast/antennae but then it starts bumping up the cost to a point whereas you may as well go with bog standard fibre internet.
