What am I looking for? Are they all much of a muchness?

Is it just a roll-mat with a wipe-down surface?

Thanks!

My Pilates teacher told me to get a thin one with a textured surface. When you are doing downward dog you don't want your feet and hands sliding apart. A £10 TK Maxx job was fine for me.

As above, don’t get a thick one as you wobble on one leg!

I have a sweaty Betty one after a few years of cheap ones. I much prefer a thicker mat for yoga. Never noticed any stability problems arising from the mat they all stem from me.

It's all about your knees. Knees aren't really designed for kneeling for long periods and if your routine has a lot of that and your knees have already seen a lot of action in their life....

Mrs D bought a non-slip on from Decathlon. She is pretty seriously into it and says it is excellent (I know next to nothing about these things). It's thin but very dense - weighs much more than I thought it would.

Cost £25-30.

I've done yoga for years and have a range of mats, half the time I just end up using a cheap £5 EVA one as I can't find where I've put the snazzier one 🤣 The only reason for buying an expensive one really is so you look like a pro when you turn up at a class, that might not be a factor at the moment though! It is handy to have a non-slip or even grippy/sticky one if you sweat a lot though. A lot of those tend not to be particularly thick, so I sometimes bung the EVA foam one under the grippy one anyway.

Do the pricier mats* last a bit longer? I've been using the cheapest one that tesco had for about 18months and it's starting to wear in a couple of places. I don't mind spending more than a fiver if it means less landfill.

I've been using one of these for the last 11 years, Yoga Mad Tree Mat Natural Rubber Yoga Mat, yes it's more expensive but i much prefer the feel of it compared to others I'd tried previously.

I find it grips wells, up to the point when sweat overloads, but I've not found any mat really copes with that sort of thing.

Yoga Mad

I've got a few of their Yoga blocks - good quality kit which will last years.

Depends on what type of yoga you do. Most of the yogis in my ashtanga class use a lifeform. I will not spend £100plus on a rubber mat.

It’s all about your knees.

Depending on how much time you will be moving in and out of kneeling postures you can get little pads for each knee. Havent tried them myself but did know (when there was a magical world of classes in a room) several people who thought they were great.
Personally being a sweaty sod I do find there is variation in grip which can be really irritating and sometimes painful.

I had a £5 tesco mat for years. Did the job, but being tall, I was always stepping off the end of it which kind of breaks your flow. Was on the lookout for ages for a longer mat and after no luck just bought a Manduka Pro-long, which was stupid expensive for a piece of rubber but the only one I could find at the time which was longer. Anyway, it's great. It's heavy, doesn't move, shift. or bunch up. Is quite thick but very firm so comfortable on the knees and elbows. Think I'd get annoyed dragging it to a class though being quite big and heavy, but I I just do yoga at home though these days so it suits me fine.

Lululemon here as well, a year in to having and the wife does yoga daily and it’s holding up well. Pricey but I prefer it to others I’ve tried. The cork ones look good as well

I was thinking Rapha is missing a trick here, sure they'll do a Rapha branded one at some stage....
