Off camping in Derbyshire soon, campsite is near the trails so what are they like?
MsD isn't a strong rider so something flat and scenic is the idea!

They are ideal then! Classic old railway lines.

Tissington trail rises steadily from Ashbourne. But if you start at the Ashbourne end it's a slight downhill all the way home!

Excellent - what's the surface like? I was thinking of taking my roadie singlespeed if its a decent enough surface.

Look up the Monsal Trail too, slightly further North, but well worth it, the scenery is great, small cafe and bike hire at the Blackwell end, great runs through tunnels, loads of eateries and shops at Bakewell. Look at the river when you are there, and see the hundreds of trout competing with ducks for the tourist bread offerings.

All of the above. Can go for miles on all of the trails, Monsal from Bakewell would be my choice.

Mainly hard-packed limestone chatter. A bit slippery in places if wet if you are on slicks. The recent Eroica rides from Bakewell used worse trails than these. You'd probably benefit from a 25mm tyre. Manifold trail has more tarmac sections.

Will do - hybrid bike & SS both have 28mm tyres so ideal really.

Wide, flat on the whole, well surfaced gravel last time I rode them, don't know if the wet weather will have damaged them in recent months but I doubt it.

Worth coming off at Tissington for a quick look at the village - very quaint, proper estate village. Decent café and butchers iirc.

The Tissington meets the High Peak Trail at Parsley Haye - small outdoor café there as well. But a mile or two further up the trail is this gem. though you may need to book to get a table especially at weekends

High Peak Trail is nice and scenic as well, but not much in the way of refreshment stops on route iirc

You can also ride around Carsington Reservoir - 7.5 miles of wide gravel tracks but surprisingly lumpy for what is billed as "family" ride

They sound ideal for what you're after.

It's worth bearing in mind that it gets pretty chilly up there compared to the valley bottom, take extra clothes and gloves based on the current weather. I can't think of a time when I have ridden them and they've been warm!

Looks like pub and cake-filled pootle day then 🙂

munrobiker has a point - if it's clear, sunny and still there are few finer places to pootle, but you can be pretty exposed to any wind up there if you catch it wrong.

Drove an hour up to the Hartington car park with my lad when he was about 6 for a ride on the Tissington - it was 5 degrees colder and blowing a gale up there. Think we left the car park, struggled over the road bridge and then he decided he'd had enough!

Both trails get very busy at Weekends. If you do stop at the Royal Oak at Hurdlow share a starter / pudding - the portions are huge!

We looked at camping at the Royal Oak, but decided on Bank House Farm nearby. Lots of reviews say the portions are huge!
